  • With the recent arrival of the new JBL EON ONE Compact and hype surrounding this portable battery-powered PA, we thought it prudent to check out what else is out there in portable battery-powered PA land and in particular the Bose S1 Pro System. In this video, we compare these two units checking out what features they share in common and what’s unique about each, whilst also looking at what applications are applicable for each model.

Thanks for the comparison. I have been performing with the Bose S1 for 2 years 5 nights a week and It's been a workhorse... no problems whatsoever except the Bluetooth disconnecting every once in a while.
The challenge with the Bose S1 is no eq for the Bluetooth or aux input. I'll be switching to the EON ONE Compact next year. So many more features and with the extra channel and eq for Bluetooth make it a no brainer.

@@Ralphydub I used the Bose S1 for over 3 years 5 to 6 nights a week. Worked great but I struggled with lack of control of aux channel eq. I got used to the Bose sound quickly and appreciated how easy the setup is. It puts out a lot of sound for such a small speaker. Since I don’t have the jbl eon Compact just the eon one mark 2 I can’t tell you how it compares. However if the Jbl eon compact was available when I bought the Bose s1 I would have bought the jbl Compact. Being able to use the jbl app on your iPad or phone to eq and change volumes is a huge plus along with 4 channels and eq available for all channels.

I own both. Also, had the L1 compact, and currently have the JBL eon one pro, plus two JBLs eon 610. Bose is great, always. So is JBL. There's a matter of taste. But as far as feature and flexibility goes, the JBL is the winner. It's louder, the battery lasted 2 to 3 hours longer than the Bose, and the "third channel" being split between bluetooth or 1/8 inch sucks. Everytime I plug the 1/8 inch, the bluetooth disconnects automatically. So I had to perform that every break, to put background music on. With the JBL, not only you get 3 real input mixer, the 4th channel accepts bluetooth AND 1/8 inch (I don't need it, because I run my voice, guitar, backing track on three channels, and use the 4th one for background/break music. I need to do that switch on the bose) - the app is really good, and being able to have an 8 band eq on the output of it is perfect. Also, the Bose doesn't have a main volume - and that's not a good thing to miss. The JBL is a definite winner here.

Fast forward 3 years; it is Jan 2023. Two months ago I traded in my S1Pro for an Electro-Voice Everse8. All I can say is WOW! It truly is a next-generation battery powered PA speaker! So much better Mic preamps, and excellent clarity. But the EQ is very sophisticated and there is a bit of a learning curve. Goodbye, S1Pro! Time to wake up, Bose, and not sit on your electronic behind! :)

I am often around musicians and djs and although JBL speakers are great sounding and quality, the BOSE S1 pro just has better clarity and power. BOSE is more of a premium range speaker for musicians and artists who need quality sound, whereas JBL is more for the general public and small party use.

Ok for Djs the jbl wins all day. For live instruments the S1 wins that battle yes the s1 looks great but for mobile events you will regret getting it when that bass drop now if u only using it for ceremonies then the s1 is way to go. But if ur doing some party in the woods, in a park, or even on a beach dont even think about that so u will be disappointed ( learned the hard way) and b4 yell ask i use a ddj sb3 and at 70 percent i get 5-6 hours. And this set up for SMALL CROWDS 20-60 PEOPLE with 2 speakers. Last thing if u think this thing gonna put out hella bass nope. Just enough for your crowd 2 feel. Remember its 8in. I made the post long 4 a reason when I was looking nobody had nothing to say for djs so I just want any Dj thats thinking of getting either 2 know the difference. Jbl. Ceremonies/ remote parties. Plus the freq. response is apparently way wider on the JBL. Apparently, because JBL says 37.5 to 20 Hz while Bose doesn't bother to even say what it is, but I've seen 62 Hz to 17 KHz quoted.

Canned music playback is zero indication of how these sound with vocals and acoustic guitars. To me the S1 sounds much better without eq. The JBL requires a lot of eq to make it sound good with guitar and vocals, but it never sounds quite as good as the S1. I find it a bit difficult to Manipulate the eq on a phone app. The volume differences are minor at clipping. The JBL is a good bit larger, but still small. I’m gigging it tonight, so I’ll give it a real test combined with a bigger speaker.

I have the S1 and gig (acoustic, vocals and backing tracks) every weekend. I rarely use my larger powered mixer and 15”JBL speakers as this little thing is just incredible. The volume it punches out is remarkable. It weighs as much as a Happy meal. The best part though is the sound it lends to my guitar. I hate eq for acoustic guitar. People rarely get it right (mid range usually) and 99% of acoustic performers sound like shit. But this is BOSE. That’s why I wanted it. It is just PERFECT. and the vocals are crisp and clean also. For a New Years gig (bigger event) because I wanted a bigger sound with more bass than the S1 could likely produce at a high volume, I just ran everything into the S1 as normal and then ran this into a channel on my powered mixer and into a single fat (bridged) JBL and mixed accordingly. The S1 became almost like a fold back but provided the crisp clarity that was otherwise missing from my larger setup. For the record, I live the JBL eon features (jealous of the USB charger and the lights on the display would be handy as it can be a bit awkward on the S1 to get your eyes down to see things on the control panel. But I’m nearly certain that the actual sound quality for musicians/singers would not measure up with the S1.

I played John Mayer's "Gravity" through both of them myself. The hi-hat was non-existent on the JBL. It sounded like a crossover issue. 3 or 4 kHz was noticeably way down. If I want to use stereo keyboard, vocals, guitar, bass, etc, it seems like 600 bucks fir basically a two plus one channel battery powered speaker. With the amount of features the JBL offers it makes it DIFFICULT to choose the Bose with the supposed better sound. I loop, sing and play acoustic. My question is could you EQ the jbl to closely match the bose? If so, it’s a no brainer. If you have a good ear and can eq it you get so many more features on the jbl and more bass (if you want it).

I was anxious to get one and ordered the JBL as soon as it was in stock. Big mistake! It has been really unreliable.
First time use was at home with not a single problem. Second use outdoors in mid 60’s weather and the thing would not stay on! I hate the power button. You have to hold it for about six seconds and then the green lights come on. Well after 20 seconds it would shut off on its own. I thought I was going crazy and it was fully charged prior to the event. Anyways after troubleshooting for 10 minutes it finally worked. Also the Bluetooth showed my device was connected but no sound at all. I had to delete it from my device and then reconnect it.
Third time use was in low 50’s weather. Did sound check prior to ceremony and it worked fine. An hour later powered it back up and did the ceremony (30 minutes) went without any problems. Took the speaker and set it up in another area for cocktail hour and battery status bar was about 80%. Started the music playlist and left for about ten minutes. Came back to check and there was no music playing. Checked iPad and it stopped on the second song. Powered the unit on and would not power on. Frustrating to say the least with not even a full 2 hours of use. Had to use a backup Behringer my assistant brought just in case.
Later my assistant checked the speaker and he said the LED (not sure which one) was red and the speaker would not turn on. He periodically checked it and after being inside the reception area it finally powered on after being in the room for about 2 hours. This thing is going back ASAP. Didn’t spend nearly $500 on a speaker that works when it wants too. Hopefully JBL is looking into issues with this as I have read on other reviews.

I’ve seen friends having to return the same speakers over and over again from the same brand. I suppose I could have given it a shot but I went ahead with the more expensive Bose. I did not like that power button, you couldn’t tell whether it was coming on or not. I prefer a standard power switch that toggles not pushes on and hopes it comes on.

Mobile Dj using compacts for ceremonies & remote sound. Been running a pair of S1 Pros for 2 years. Solid, reliable, long battery life, light and super-clean sound. Just like wattage, do not be fooled by SPL. Clarity & distribution are the true test. Note: S1s change the dynamics when they are positioned from wedge, monitor or straight-on loudspeaker. Hands-down far superior to the JBLs. (Ran JBL Eons for years & still have them. 1st generation & 515s) Swapped out main PA to pair of Bose L1 model 2 portable line arrays with extra B2 subs and amps 5 years ago. Never hit over 25% volume even @ home...they are perhaps a bit much, but we never worry about crowd coverage even @ large outdoor events.
