THIS!! I keep seeing similar videos of Portugal, Mexico, etc getting expensive for tourists, and my heart breaks for the locals being priced out of their homes. Nothing wrong with traveling to experience a place or culture, but I honestly hate this new culture where expats are moving to a place, buying up/building up properties and pricing locals out. 😔

As an Australian, Bali is/was a popular holiday destination for families especially for those that love the beach and are into surfing. Flights used to be so cheap, and you could stay at a 5 star resort for less than $80 a night. Now it's so expensive and unaffordable, and I wish I travelled more back in the days before Instagram, CZcams, Facebook, Digital Nomads, Covid even existed.. that was the real Bali back then! :(

I lived there with an Indonesian scholarship in 2013-14 in Canggu, 500m from the beach, spent around 300$/month altogether for rent, phone, scooter, and eating out every day!!! (Never cooked at home), partying, clothes, yoga, dance, singing 3-4 times a week. Travels were extra. It was extremely cheap back then. I loved it! :)
To be honest you put your effort to promote this island for other people as well. So price increase and traffics and changes are the results of what you are doing as well.
He is only here to make money. He doesnt support the LOCALS economy. Giving your grab driver 50 cents is just cheap. Give him 50k.. it will buy him bensin or help his kids. He doesnt speak the language after 5 years which means he really cant communicate with anyone but his own kind..

Sounds like balis best days have come and gone as a secret place to enjoy culture nature and ethnic foods. Flight price reflect that. Oh well that happens when digital nomads wanna make living selling there vacation pictures.
My wife and I moved to Bali in 2019 and got to experience that nostaglic time you mentioned. It was amazing! Since then, we moved back to the States and now we have a 2 year old. We look forward to hopefully moving back in 5 years when these growing pains are a thing of the past. I would love to raise my daughter in a much more peaceful and welcoming place.

The worst thing about Bali is more Americans are moving there.
This is what happens when sustainable tourism is not promoted and local governments do not put restrictions into what expacts can do in countries like this. As a Portuguese citizen I can say that the exact same thing is happening here. Food prices skyrocketed, rent prices are already among the highest in Europe, locals can't afford to live in the cities or downtowns anymore, local culture is slowly disappearing, portuguese language is not the main language that you hear when you're walking the streets, and many more examples that I could write here. Social media platforms and travel based influencers had a big slice of responsability on this. Everybody is constantly promoting a country because of its beauty, of its people and so on, but never talk about the sustainable ways that you could visit or even live in a foreign country without destroying its local economy and culture. The future path of countries like these is already written and we have some examples in prior locations that suffered a boom in tourism before. What happened to that places? Prices kept getting higher and higher that eventually it was not worth anymore to visit or live there, so a lot of hotels, villas, restaurants and other businesses were doomed to close and were just abandoned, transforming a place that was once known for its tourism into ghost towns.
Christian, I follow your work since 2016 and me and my girl love it but we can also affirm that if travel based influencers do not change the way they promote all these locations, every gem location in this planet will be destroyed in a matter of a few years. Governments won't do much because they will always seek for those fast tax returns, but they tend to forget that those tax returns won't last long.
If you are willing to make a change and create a more conscious approach to travel, me and my girl are willing to help you and who knows, be part of your amazing project and start a change in this industry before it is too late. I know you are conscious and an empathic guy that can not sleep well when problems like this one start to get very very serious, in fact, one of your major businesses might be in danger as well unfortunately.

Visiting Bali can be nice. Lived the for 5 years and honestly it was nothing like before...so I had to move out. Not just because prices were way higher but because it feels the island doesn't have the same magic. Of course if you go to places like Amed or Lovina you will be alone, but then everything around Canggu and the Bukit is western and for westerners. Gyms, yoga, spas, restaurants, clubs, partys, etc. Where is the culture? Where are the locals? Just working for us bules? It feels terrible. And of course I love to go to different restaurants every night, but when it's too much it's too much. Also the audacity of some people living there now...honestly. Rudeness, not following the rules, being nasty towards locals. It's unbelievable.

Just got back last week. This video is soft. It doesn't really convey the choking traffic. Or sitting in over crowded cafes where every table filled with Russians, restaurant staff are overwhelmed and you wait almost an hour for a coffee. instragram spots are mob scenes, people waiting for hours to take a picture. Lines and lines of vans shuttling you around Nusa Penida for pictures!? It was crazy and really unpleasant. He didn't cover Ubud, it took us an hour to get across town (less than a kilometer / on a scooter)! We went East, not great there either. We did find some solace above Lovina in a the North. The spirit and beauty I enjoyed before COVID, it is gone. Gone. We were there during this year's rainy and low season. I want to send big heart blessings to anyone attempting to go during the high season this summer. My recommendation? Cancel your trip. Can an island melt down? It is going to be a nightmare this year. You've been warned. 😮😢 We couldn't wait to leave.

Interesting video - thanks for sharing. I've been visiting Bali since the early 1990s, visiting a few times a year. And yes it's changed a lot over time. I talk to my older friends who were visiting/ living there back in the late 60s and 70s, and they have some wild stories to tell - but still their experience was FAR DIFFERENT than anything I experienced, or that we experience today. Bali is an evolving place - change is inevitable. That said, I have a lot of local friends there and your very neutral tone of the change with Russian folks arriving is not how my local friends have expressed their feelings of the influx. They feel many of the new arrivals are arrogant and rude - treating them like servants or slaves. So a quick PSA: when visiting Bali - please be kind. Please be considerate. Please don't be rude and treat anyone poorly. You don't do any of us non-locals any favors by being a jerk. Thanks in advance for your consideration. 🙂

As a Ukrainian who understand russian language, this is so true. The way they behave is very shameful. There has been a huge influx of moneyed expats into Bali the last few years, including yourself. In a few of your videos several months ago you covered your building of your hotel. If you get lots of expats investing lots of money and more and more people being drawn in by the hype then everything is going to cost more and continue to increase in cost. As long is there continues to be high demand like there currently is then supply vs demand will continue to push up costs.
funfact: influencers like you, who sold bali to the world for years, are the main reason for the high demand and therefor a major factor for the price increases 😏

Foreigners cannot own land here..He does nothing but employees them for 10 dollars a day. After being here for years he cannot understand nor speak bahasa..just sad

I get your point, but isn’t this situation the same everywhere (touristy destination areas I mean)? Like Mexico for example, a lot of westerners buy places there for investments (rental places) or many parts of CARRIBEAN, or other Asian countries, well, pretty much tropical destinations. The only difference in my opinion is that these other places I’ve mentioned are bigger and actually plan infrastructure for growth and what not. Bali on the other hand isn’t that big and even though tourist demands are growing or a lot of expats are flocking in their infrustructure stays the same , I don’t know, perhaps it’s a problem with their own government being corrupted and they just put this money to fill their own pockets instead of making life better for local people. I’m not too familiar with their politics but that would be my guess. All in all I don’t know how this benefits the local people, probably it benefits them in some ways but also hurts them in other ways. 🤷🏻♀️

Bro...I lived in Bali for 18 months back in 1996. Seminyak used to be ground zero for expats, Canngu was just a tiny village back then with endless fields of rice paddies that i'd pass by on my way to surf out there. Listening to this video and seeing the bits....I feel so lucky to have lived and experienced it back in the day. I still have some friends that live there, they told me it has been spoiled long before COVID hit - paradise lost!

Everyone watching CZcamsrs promote Bali during the 2 to 3 years of Covid has led to this huge influx of demand now that travel restrictions have lifted. The whole world wants to move to Bali. It's quite ironic and sad that CZcamsrs have ruined it for themselves and others. Hopefully, the demand slows down substantially soon and Bali returns to something close to what it was in 2019 before the pandemic.
We just spent 3 weeks there and it cost WAY more than we thought it was going to be! I loved Bali and it was a dream destination for so long...but a little overrated... probably don't need to go back. But driving through Ubud in the rice fields on the little back roads might be one of the most magical things we have ever done!

My thought exactly. Went last May. One of the most overrated places I’ve been. Shit was instagramized to the max. It left a really bad taste in my mouth. That being said, I’d love to go back but I’d go explore the northern part of the island. PS. I also really enjoyed driving around the backroads of ubud. Very magical indeed

I first traveled to Bali in 2015 too and returned this year and I couldn't believe how much Canggu has changed. It was kind of sad but I still enjoyed myself. I suppose like every other popular tourist hot-spot it's never as good as the first time you experience it. I felt the same way when I returned to Thailand.

thats funny I also went to Bali last month, and the last time was in 2015. In 2015 I was in Ubud and my friend told me to come to Canggu if i want to get away from the crowds in Ubud! ha ha how things have changed. Canggu now is just a different experience. But not for me.

I lived there recently for just under two months. No one can pay me to live in Canggu. I had to venture out to other places which were not infested with rude, nasty, foreigners/tourists (specially Russians) to have a good time and experience the culture and beauty of this magic island. I hope they cancel the VOA for Russians as the discussions are under way for that.

I'm currently here and have a 2 month visa, I'm paying to move my flight tomorrow and go back to the UK after 2 weeks asap. Beautiful island and people but I don't wan't to sit in a bar listening to scooters, honking and breathing petrol fumes. Yes, there are quieter places, but it takes too long to get anywhere.

What I always do when booking accommodation is to book in advance at refundable, changeable prices, even when non refundable prices are attractive. Then from time to time, continue to check prices so you can change when there are better deals.

Nope. It is a mess. Just left last week. Matt was super soft in this video, culture is getting crushed, biz people can't hire locals easily because of demand. Don't get fooled.
One thing I want to correct in the video. It's definitely not true that the cost of cooking at home is the same as in the restaurants. You can get fresh produce at the local markets for cheap!
100% correct... 2 people 150,000 you can eat like a king. Coca Cola at restaurant is 15,000...if bought at toko its 6,000...

Hard to believe the rapid change growth there. Our popular spots for foreigners here in the Philippines now far behind which is known for remote work digital nomads several years ago. at least, no excessive traffic and price increase. Well deserved by Indonesia though, they grew and improved just everywhere. They're a huge economy for several years now
I moved to bali in 2021 and canggu was completely empty with no one on the road when you go to a restaurant for lunch, now days I completely avoid canggu bc of it's insane traffic jam's! I moved to Pererrnan as its also in development right now but still not as bad as canggu.

Bali is an ideal place to purifing and relaxing our soul, mind and body. Its a place to get closer to your sprituality, nature and kindness of people. With those qualities, its understood what to offer come with such price.
Although foreigners might find the beach and scenary in Bali is similar to those in Thai and Philipine, but Bali is in different catagory of uniqueness and elegance.
As Indonesian, we were hurt badly recently by rude and uncivilizad foreign tourist who disrespect and put dirt in our gem island. Hope the higher price in Bali can filter the garbage tourists from coming in.

3. A Rusian guy tried to make chaos by fighting with local people who blocked his way to enter Hindu religious ceremony.
Perhaps high prices filters mostly the genuinely good tourists out and let the wealthy but arrogant russian tourists in

If you live like locals, cooked your own food, buy your ingredients in local market, and live in modest place, with kitchen and bathroom, you would only need $500-600 a month. Most probably way less than that.

This is extreme. I'm literally in Bali right now living in a two bedroom place with kitchen and Aircon (bills included) near Ubud for $20 a night and eating (out or in, it is the same price) for $7.50 a day. Yes you can pay more.....but the same is true anywhere on Earth. A lovely meal out in an international food restaurant a few days ago cost me $15 for that one meal. It's is all about choice and Bali still has options for all budgets.

ubud is lower prices than canggu. u will have to pay $40-60 in canggu my guess now. $30 was minumum last year i found. food dunno

Bali first time 1997. No restaurants on beach at Jimbaran two on other side of the road, amazing seafood, lads climbed a tree for coconuts to make us a cocktail Sorry you never experienced real Bali. Nigel and Yani Mason could say the same about me. Yanis bar awesome.. That was when the world was a simpler place and people spoke with each other not text messages. Think you don't understand what you have missed. Must add it was dear to fly then. Cost 3k with flights for and rooms for 8 days for 2 pax.

I'm here right now and was talking to my friends about all the points you made in this video. It's so much more expensive than I remember. The traffic is insane. And it feels like there are more foreigners than locals. But I do disagree with the airport arrival. Immigration was crazy and I stood in line for 1.5 hours.

I watched a documentary about how the local people are being forced to move into the outskirts, losing seafront properties, their homes because hotels and investors are buying up premium land because of the booming tourism industry. At what cost though? Price of living has been driven up to the point that locals struggle to afford a comfortable life in their own country. Tourism is a double edged sword.

Are you sure there were local beach front houses? When batu balong and berawa was still undeveloped, there were mostly empty land and bushes. Local houses are mostly along the main roads and gangs. Beachfront houses have high erosion and maintenance costs. Anyone selling their houses become millionaire in USD and could move to quieter residential area with bigger land. Most locals or workers from other islands live in Denpasar with lower rental and food prices.
We just came from 8 months in the Philippines, life was super cheap and easy and here we are in Bali for the summer. time will tell which is pricier now. Great video! 800 vids online is a huge accomplishment! our little channel with 50 has some major goals now! Way to go bro. keep it up!

I'm American as well as a multi tour military veteran, and I own guns, so I know what I'm talking about. guns don't kill people or cause violence... horrid people do. stop listening to the news. the Philippines is better than Bali in every way in 2023. In the 12 days since I made this 1st comment we have seen just how ugly it has gotten. We had booked to be here for 3 months and now are leaving tomorrow. and if you learn world history, not having guns just means the government can control everything you do and own your soul. Anyone could come and take what you have right now. Guns enable safety and security.

We are thinking about Canggu right now since we need to work remotely and we need some restaurants and life around us. After watching your video about the traffic I have some doubts about Canggu. Please consider canceling or reschedulimg. We were there doing the low season. The high season is going to be a nightmare this year. Nobody talks about distance, now they talk in minutes and hours. I am sorry. I wish someone have told us. If you are using a car, you are going to be miserable
Hi Anastasia, Canggu is the cool/dgital nomad place to go. You would have a lovely time in Sanur, easy to get around and good for families.
the location of nusa dua is more organized and neat, the streets are wider than those in canggu and seminyak, so you dont need to get stuck in traffic if you go outside the hotel. the internet is very fast, location is quite at night, the beach is clean & not crowded and usually used as a location for international events such as the G20. canggu and seminyak is suitable for people who love to party at beach club and surfing
You will be fine. Just avoid canggu but again visiiting canggu from 8am to 12 pm is fine
$40/day on food? Woah! As a single guy who eats really good, I probably spend $40 a week in Michigan.

Well pointed out the current issues in Bali. Just Canggu is sick, were in Pererenan, it was still ok. But Canggu and Ubud is so overcrowded, it is not even high season. Can not quite understand the Bali hype and I have never seen so many superficial people in one place.

There's also tons of extremely successful people here building mega villas and investing and you could find an AI / Crypto / Entrepreneur meetup group every night of the week. You might be one of the top reasons for the traffic inflow ;)

As a local, i have my own opinion, actually we can spend below Rp. 100k perday for food. It depends on where do you buy the food, waroong and traditional market are the best for the local price. For others points, high demand makes high price. After pandemic, Bali is one of the memorable destination for foreigners. Now, many foreigners are coming to bali

idk. Gua selalu kontra sm bisnis tentang pariwisata, apalagi sampai mengandalkan semuanya ke pariwisata. Tourism itu buat gua penemuan paling menyedihkan. dengan keuntungan dr pajak sebesar apapun kontra nya selalu lebih besar dari keuntungan tsb.
I pay 260 dollars for two bedroom local house 5 min from the beach by scooter, located near to Balangan and Dreamland beach. you can live cheap and nice in Bali if u want and know how. Canggu is basically little western city in Bali but anyways, been here long enough, lived in Cangu for about 3 years and honestly I don't know why people still like it, horrible place. Better come to Uluwatu, real beaches and surf is here, amazing nature and clean air. Crazy developing already as well tho,going to be next Canggu:D
