In today's video we look at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Battle Nexus released on PS2, Xbox, GameCube and PC. Why did this game receive a more negative critical response than any of the others from Konami. Let's find out.

If by some off chance miracle we get a TMNT Cowabunga Collection 2 , which is composed of all 6 Konami made 2003 TMNT series of games; I hope they add 4 player coop to the first console game and fix the issues of the 2nd game (like no more shared energy and controls on par with the first 2003 console game).

I grew up a little after the ‘90s Turtle Mania, but I grew up with the ‘03 Turtles and I had 2 older brothers who were in the middle of ‘90s Turtle Mania. My brothers had an old Sega Genesis with Hyperstone Heist that was handed down to me. My first introduction to TMNT was from Hyperstone Heist, so that was my TMNT game. A little later I had TMNT 2: Battle Nexus on the PS2. Eventually I discovered the ‘89 TMNT Arcade on that game. It was just like the Genesis one, but better! Wow, so cool! Imagine my surprise to find out this Arcade game came out BEFORE Hyperstone Heist, and it even had a sequel on Arcade and SNES called Turtles in Time which was what Hyperstone Heist was based off of. It was so crazy to have been close enough to that era to have nostalgia for it, but far enough removed that I didn’t experience it quite the same as everyone else.
So, people can criticize Hyperstone Heist for reusing assets and being different from TIT, or the change in music or the new V/As in the ‘89 Arcade, but I’m grateful The Arcade game was included in this title, even with the unfortunate compromises. It made me aware that my favorite childhood game wasn’t just a great game, but the last in a great series of games - and it probably wasn’t even the best one! When Cowabunga Collection comes out, I’ll finally get to try some of the TMNT games I still missed as a kid, like the GB ones and Tournament Fighters. It’s a bodacious time to be a Konami TMNT fan right now!

The original arcade game being unlockable in this game was the prime selling point for me. Though I was disappointed that not only was the music changed, but the voices were gone. I felt cheated.

I have Mutant Nightmare on the Gamecube. It’s a decent game, but Turtles in Time is HEAVILY butchered in it! They not only replaced the soundtrack with tunes from other 2K3 Turtles games (I recognised 2 tracks from the DS version of Mutant Nightmare!) but the framerate is slow and choppy, they removed scoring and they redid the voices, those redone voices being AWFUL!

  • @michaelpetel

'Mutant Nightmare' almost got it right. It was an improvement over 'Battle Nexus' in some respects, but still had A few things holding it back, and by this point, it was too little, too late. Had the earlier games had the same 4 player set up as 'Mutant Nightmare', ditched the AI controlled players, and had simpler, more satisfying game play, they could've been more well received.

Hearing Top Hat Gaming Man say "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in his reviews of TNMT game the past couple of years made me nearly forget that the franchise used to be called "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles" in the UK. To be honest, I feel like TMNT 2 Battle Nexus was a pretty fun game, nothing more or less.
Critics were exaggerated and overly nostalgic, and the 6/10 by IGN is a "revision" since the original one was 5/10 pretty much saying the same thing GameSpot did.
After playing the game so many times, I can safely assume that the problems of the game are indeed true, but are justifiable under certain points of view to me.
The controls being less responsive where probably made to make the little platforming sessions slightly more challenging, and the relatively dumb AI of the enemies (bosses have a sharper AI) are probably meant for making the game more casual considering the addition of the 4 playable characters. I mean, I would personally dislike enemies too smart when playing coop, as my friend might not be as good as I am, and it could end up the fun quickly.
It's a quirky game, but it's still pretty enjoyable, especially in coop goofing around with your friends or brother/sister!
Also, I know it won't really matter to the gameplay, but the OST is top notch, and I don't understand how almost NOBODY mentions it when talking about this game.
Looking forward to your video on Mutant Nightmare! Usually considered the most polished out of the three PS2 main line TMNT games.

Instead of improving on the mechanics of the first game, which was kinda solid, if a bit repetitive, they threw that all out to turn it into a janky beat em up/platformer hybrid where you have to unlock your basic combo. The animated cutscenes they produced just for this game were cool though. Clearly that's where all the budget went.
