- This is part of a program presented on RTE radio by John McCormack's widow Lily. It was recorded on 31st August 1950 and broadcast on the 5th anniversary of John McCormack's death, 16th September 1950.

"The snowy breasted pearl" is a noisy old recording but it's amazing that they managed to squeeze 5 mins 32secs of music onto one side of a record'.As the words are a little unclear at times, I have put them on the video. ("Colleen oge asthore" are words derived from the Irish language and mean "girl young treasure" and "colleen oge machree" means "girl young (in my) heart").

It must have been an amazing experience to hear/see him sing in person. I've read that in addition to his glorious voice, he possessed tremendous stage charisma. The first recording is gorgeous. His high notes are sublime.

It is remarkable how many great tenors died young or at least before three score year and ten eg Caruso, McCormack, Tauber, Wunderlich. Schmidt, Gigli

I think these must be some of the finest tenor recordings ever made. Beautiful, beautiful singing.

The two most memorable McCormick recordings for me: IL MIO TESORO & O SLEEP, WHY DOST THOU LEAVE ME. The latter has a very long passage on one breath that even non tenors as myself have used as a warm up exercise for many years now. In addition on the Handel piece mentioned here is a perfect quick trill that McCormick makes at the beginning of the piece.

John McCormick was my mother favorite vocalist back in the 50s, long ago as it seems now. She had several of his records which she'd play around Christmastime. Those recordings dated from the same era as these, 1910 to 1921, complete with the static of those times, which has been removed by newer technology, so John's voice rings clear, still.

An introduction by John McCormack’s widow Lily, his one true love. If this radio broadcast was five years after the great tenor’s death it was 1950. Following his passing, his widow wrote a book of their life together entitled “I Hear You Calling Me”, now out of print.

The program is from 1950 but the recording I found only had Lily's introductions, I had to add the music.
I'm lucky enough to have the book that you mention. Sometime in the 1960s I bought a batch of 87 McCormack 78s and the seller kindly "threw in" the biography.

Another lovely selection although I prefer the earlier recording of 'I hear you calling me' it will always remind me of my late husband, who finally got the courage to sing it in his later years, in a slighter lower key, because his voice had started to deepen as he grew older. Nonetheless he made a 'good fist of it' as we say here in Ireland. 💞

I'm not a singer but I think that it must be a difficult song to sing in any key. Actually the recording of the program that I found just had Lily's introductions, not the songs and I included the 1921 'I hear you calling me' because it's probably less well known than his other recordings of the song.

What a very fine looking man John McCormack was, he was blessed with the most brilliant voice, he was a man with love in his heart for God/Jesus/ Blessed Vergin Mary and his fellow man/woman/child wherever they came from.
