To me this song is the quintessential alternative to the frantic Cannibal Corpse sound. As much as I like hearing George and the other guys rip things to shreds with great precision and speed I also really like this wide open stopping and Majestic sound, unhurried and regal even

Absolutely agreed. I can totally get down with some frantic high speed Cannibal Corpse intensity but to me this is the stuff that Rings deepest and truest and most elegant over the long Arc of time. I'm deep in the process of writing my next album into bringing in as much of this into the world of acoustic roots music as I can. I don't really understand how there isn't an entire generation of death metal bands basing their entire sound on this album. It seems like most of the bloodline followed to the other Branch, the double bass post-hardcore flip-out thing. To me, this album is an archetypal standard for slow power metal, a continuation of what Black Sabbath started. There is a confident and relaxed Elegance to songs like this, where the band is in no rush whatsoever and doesn't seem to have anything to prove. When he gets into these lyrics, he takes me on a journey that is much deeper and more peaceful than the superficial hack and stab flip-out experience that you get from Modern Cannibal Corpse and the bands they have influenced. I love the album Vile very much, more than any other George album...but God, if there were some way to preserve the best of what Chris did with the Created To Kill demo with the best of what George did on that album and somehow combine that with this album, well, that would be the undisputed Michael Jordan of death metal

Try as I may to find other death metal bands, from this era or from the modern era, that have something even close to the slow, confident, brooding power of this album, I simply cannot. I would appreciate any recommendations you have. I've heard stuff this heavy, and I've heard stuff this slow, and I've heard stuff with lyrics this smart, but to hear it all in one place - that's why this album is in the discussion of the greatest death metal albums of all time
