Ps2 having dvd out of the box is overstated as a reason for it winning so hard too often. It just ended up with the most comprehensive library of critical games. Early on it got gta3 and that pretty much gave them huge increase in sales early on by itself. Then it kept compounding. Near perfect backwards compat with ps1 games was also huge, you could keep your old library going forward intsead of having to ditch it if you had to trade in the old console to upgrade. Do wish the cube had been more popular but unfortunately nintendo just couldn't recover their old third party strength they had In the snes days that the n64 hemorrhaged.
Yeah the DVD is often given all the credit for PS2's success by people that weren't even born yet. Fact is, the PS2 was the HYPE machine. Coming off the heals of the Juggernaut that was the PS1 the Hype train behind the PS2 was unstoppable. I had and loved PS1 when it came out as well as N64, Saturn and even eventually graduated to the beloved DreamCast. PS2 looming in the background cast such a large shadow the Poor DreamCast just never stood a chance.
It was the DVD factor. The games didn't sell like they should've. A lot of people didn't play games on the PS2, and used it for movies. See, my brother and I were there.
PS2 still would've won, but you take out the gimmick of it being the cheapest DVD player on the market it would not have sold 155 million.
Or it could of been both factors, shocker I know
@@tntbigshow4826 As someone else who was there for the time, nah this is overstating it. Yes it wouldn't have sold 155 mil but I think it's fair to say it would have easily cleared 120 based on the PS1 and PS4 and how the PS3/Xbox 360 sales split between one another. The games were STACKED, no console since had as many compelling insanely good and genre defining exclusives. Yeah sure some like MGS2 and GTA San Andreas released on the Xbox years later but that was after the hype was over, like with Mass Effect coming out on 360 first. It just was THE console to have.
@@dasaiyantv8483 I say 110 to 120. The DVD was a big part, but it would've been big either way because it was the sequel to the PS1?
love your videos man, your commentary and comedy that you throw in is witty and very easygoing (though still pretty informational, in my opinion). keep up the good videos, love em
Omg, the gamecube is 23 years old. I feel so ancient. I remember the cube so fondly and the games are amazing. It has my favorite controller design. Also, despite being so old, the graphics hold up so well. Metroid prime was the sole reason I got a gamecube in the first place. To this day, there still aren't any fps games like the prime series. Played a demo of it at walmart and I was sold. What a lovely console.
Great work on this video - your genuine interest in the Gamecube (which by the looks of it was well before your time) shines through the video.
Looking forward to seeing your channel progress. Subscribed.
Much appreciated!
this was in my reccomended, didnt expect a video this quality to come from such a small youtuber. keep up the good work 👍
Bruh the red circle glitched. That is NOT where it’s supposed to be. To think it was all almost perfect, how disappointing.
Another great thing... It doesn't have an acid leaking capacitor like the "box" had (until MS fixed that for their 1.6 revision). 😄 One last detail, there are two revisions of Gamecube console: 001 and 101. The later, Nintendo removed of the "Ext. Ports" anf the port to connect component cables. I heard it was because Nintendo wanted to lower production costs.
Didnt feel like mentioning one of the greatest racing games of all time that is just revered to this day?
"After that depressing statistic", had me rolling.
Next Title: The Wii U - The Console That Deserved More
It is telling that the Sega Dreamcast seems to be remembered among more people and more fondly than the GameCube. And Sega's console was only on the market for about two years.
Yeah, I really want to get a dreamcast at some point. I've heard that's the best way to play Sonic adventure 1 and 2, and I really want to play those games.
Nintendo had just lost Rare and still hadn't quite managed to get third party support back yet. Nintendo was a awkward company it paid the price. Wind Waker was a good game, but it felt incomplete and was certainly missing dudgeons. Metroid Prime was my favourite game.
Even though I already knew about all of this I still watched it for the love of my favorite console, great video!
The Rogue Leader part was a joke, right? It’s got a higher Metacritic score than Luigi’s Mansion and Super Monkey Ball.
Luigi’s mansion alone sold 3x more than rogue leader. I didn’t say it was a bad game I just said that people didn’t care as much about getting it in comparison to the other main launch titles and launch window titles.
@@nerdcage22 Okay, you’re right about that.
promo sm 🙋
Loved the Gamecube but it having better performance than PS2 is a bit debatable. Theoretically it did if you just look at the specs but in practice pretty much every 3rd party game was better on PS2 vs the Gamecube versions. Still a great console with a lot of great games!
That was probably due to the propriety discs and obstacles developers had to face when working with the Gamecube's hardware, so yeah it got pretty under utilized.
Nothing like copying every other vid that everybody else has done either be original or don't be
Uh ok
@@nerdcage22 don't listen to him kid. You're doing a great job 👏 👍
