  • In this video I show the highlights of performing an overhead or valve adjustment on a Cummins ISL 8.9 liter engine in our 2003 Monaco Dynasty on the Roadmaster chassis.
    Our coach also came equipped with the Jacobs Compression Brake so the removal, reinstallation and clearances are also shown for the C-Brake.
    This engine is the CM554 series of engine within the ISL family of engines. The parts used are as follows:
    Rocker Cover gasket (Center fasteners); Cummins part # 3965548
    Center bolts with rubber grommets; Cummins part # 3990876

    Thanks Mike! Interesting that the valves tighten up on this power plant, usually on Cat’s they increase it clearance, then if not adjusted at proper intervals they pound the cam followers out of them! 👍🏻👍🏻

      Thanks. I've seen them go either way but generally I find the clearances are decreased.
      Then you for taking the time to watch.

    Excellent video. I haven't bought the Monaco MH yet but was wondering about how to get access to the Cummins diesel.

      Thank you. Engine access varies from year to year and model to model but at least with Monaco's they're not as terrible as some. If it doesn't have a bedroom slide and has the north/south facing bed, it is usually as simple as raising the bed to gain access to the engine.
      Thanks for watching and best of luck in your Monaco purchase.

    Hi Mike...I'm about to change out my valve cover gasket & just tried to see how torqued down the 5 bolts are & applied some pressure but backed off being afraid of breaking it. Should I be afraid of doing this or are these bolts hardened enough not to break & just apply more torque on the rachet? I certainly don't want to cause me any grief of having to do any "easy out project". This is a 2003 Cummins 400 isl with 72k on the clock.

      Mine were quite tight as well. I used a little longer ratchet to break them loose, but they did break loose with a little extra effort.

      Thanks for your reply Mike..& do I assume it's righty tighty & lefty lucy from front of the Cummins just to make sure?

      @zmotorsports62  Před 13 dny

      That is correct. They are not left hand threads. Clockwise tighten/ counter clockwise loosen.

    Hi @zmotorsports62 , I've enjoyed your channel and posts on different forums. Any chance I can contact you directly? I recently purchased a 2003 Beaver Patriot and it would help to check in with you about a few things. Thanks.
