you have met the blue bird of unhappiness... hate those things. i can tell you the Best place to mine iron. on your way to the old dam is a bridge with an opening like a key hole. before you reach it is a cave passage. orange birds often at the top but there are three good iron spots as well as sulfur and blue luminescent growth. you can get sand, sandstone, and a sand digger for dinner at the lowest entrance with no enemies inside. if you go towards the bridge you can get a good deal of lapis as well. i keep a shrine outside the bottom to farm stuff. the iron mine you are sent to is just not worth it other than clearing the blacksmiths mission.
