  • Can the new DeWalt DCF845 XR flagship impact driver become the king of them all? I put it to the test against the Atomic DCF850, DCF840, DCF787, XR DCF887, Atomic DCF809 and brushed DCF885.

      My thoughts exactly. I saw Northern Tool had some tools/sets on sale heading into Memorial Day...started comparison shopping, and found the same deal you did at Lowes (similar at HD). And minus 10% mil discount makes it $90! Or at NT, go with the 809for $99 add a small $1 item to use the $20 off $100 coupon making it $80 (for the 809). I have been trying to compare the 809 and 840 and think the 840 is the way to go...esp w/ two batts and charger...versus the more expensive 850 for what I will use it for (not braking lug nuts).

    • @MatSmithLondon
      @MatSmithLondon Před 9 měsíci +2

      Hi, I am considering upgrading from 887 to 850 based on smoothness of operation. I use the driver a lot. After a particularly gruelling session driving in a lot of 6x100 wood screws (lots of heat, wrist exhaustion) and after having used this model a lot for last four years, I was looking for something that gave me better ergonomics.
      Can you give any more detailed comments about how they compare after using for a longer time?
      Is the difference huge and noticeable or is it just a small step up?
      I have used a Makita before and really prefer that because of the ergonomics, just seems lighter and more powerful than my 887. Would you say the 850 seems to deliver more power and less wrist ache? I can see it’s no lighter.
      I would really consider getting the makita, even though I have fully bought into dewalt and already have 4x 5ah batteries.
      I am very annoyed by all the content on CZcams, sick of all the speed comparisons - that’s only half the story for people who use the tool daily… can’t find any decent reviews of the tools because of this!

    • @Meme-zc4cw
      @Meme-zc4cw Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@MatSmithLondon Excellent question and I agree 100% about the speed test, it really doesn't mean much in the real world. I am a man on a budget, and I focus more on longevity. So DeWalt is my primary brand but I do have some Makita, M12 and Ridgid tools as well, so I like to think I am unbiased. Makita makes an outstanding product. I haven't used their impact drivers but I have plenty of other tools (router, circular saw) and I would say overall, they tend to be more smooth and easier on the hands and wrist. They really are well designed tools but I have found they tend to be slightly more expensive. The 850 is excellent. It is more balanced in my opinion (than the 887) and the coupler doesn't seem to lock up like the 887. Also, I haven't noticed it heating up as much. The overall smoothness (less vibration) is much better than the 887 and that is why I have started using it more. All in all, you can't go wrong with the 850. It is a tool you can hand off to kids and will last a lifetime and serve you well. I found a lot of sales on them too so you may be able to find it for $99.

    Like you said, I think the 840s are specifically for roofers or someone driving in thousands of screws. They're comfortable to use for long periods and have that big, long, beefy gearbox that isn't going to overheat or break in a hurry.

    I've got a few work buddies that are still rocking the 885's. We had a recent death from the tool boxes. An 845 got ran over a truck.

    Well up through the 887, I can't speak to the newer ones, but a LOT of tradesmen preferred the old "linear" 885 and its variable speed control over the 887 that was also known to smoke...AND they just get less and less expensive for what is still a nice impact driver for anyone. But, if you are a homeowner just starting into a more expensive platform and choosing black and yellow, you would NOT be wrong in choosing it as a place to start.. And if going with a hammer drill the old 796 will get it done also...ask the Ryobi hammer drill that flew across the yard one day when using both with different bits.

    My thoughts too. I don't have either of them yet but from all the info and video head to head tests i've watched, it seems like the 850 is the best all over all. If I could have one it would be the 850 but if I could have two it would be the 850 and the 840, People often overlook the automotive applications in their videos giving the 840 the crown based on driving small fasteners into wood with a higher speed as the mark to hit.

    just like everyone is saying, the graphics were so good and so satisfying to watch and very easy to understand! I have an 840 and it was my first drill because of the price on the holidays but for my job in framing now I know I made the right choice without even knowing it and this video makes me appreciate more my impact because now I understand what it's good for. Thank you! /Subscribed!

      How's it holding up? Just got the 840 kit myself for a steal of $100 w/batteries and charger. Going to be using it on small bolts and screws for mechanic job. Nothing to crazy like in the last test lol.

    The 850 should have XR branding on it imo. I get the marketing issues they’d have with the whole atomic thing, but XR is supposed to be the flagship, and it’s not the fastest or strongest, hell it’s not even the best looking. If I were getting into the Dewalt line, the 850 would be the one I’d pick up.

    • @PhillyFixed
      @PhillyFixed  Před rokem +10

      Overseas it's actually branded as XR, go figure 🤔

    • @Griffinwoodworks
      @Griffinwoodworks Před rokem +2

      @@PhillyFixed it sounds like they know it too then lol. They won’t take any sales hits because of it, but it’s not a good look for the XR brand. I’d have went with atomic regardless, just because of the nature of woodworking and custom furniture and needing the extra clearance from the smaller form factor.

      The problem is public perception. The unwashed masses don’t know how much power the 850 really has. All they see is a tiny impact. Dewalt is milking the bigger models that are cheaper to make. They know how much power the 850 makes they want to see how much demand is generated by these online reviewers vs. just the floor display models where none would be the wiser passing by.

    • @is5032
      @is5032 Před rokem +1

      Beat me to it Jim. Here in the UK it’s branded as an XR model and no mention as an Atomic. I think that’s the way to go as it’s a stand out tool for me in Dewalts range as well as impact drivers in general.

      You’re dead wrong. Home Depot’s DeWalt “Atomic” line is for DYI customers, customers who don’t put a lot of hours on their DeWalt tool(s), and or customers who don’t know the XR is the high performance line.
      The 840 is the deal because that’s an XR without the “XR” stamped on it. It was clearly the best *DRIVER* out of the group. The 840 is also smaller, lighter, and has a much better balance in the hand than the 850. The 850 would be uncomfortable to hold all day, with the fat heavy head on it throwing the balance off, for people who have to drive a high amount of screws, lags, etc. on a regular basis.
      The 850 is a money grab for DeWalt just like a vast majority of the rest of their Home Depot line…which is their weaker performing line when high performance is needed.

    Dewalt power detect or flexvolt drills vs all other drills out there would be a nice test. I have the power detect and it's the nicest drill I've ever used by a mile. Most power detect and 60 Volt tools are crushing other brands right now.
