On Broadway in NYC in late 1993, Byrne and I both tried to go through the same door at the same time and gave each other dirty looks. It’s one of my favorite celebrity encounters.
in 1993 he was already pretty outgoing and social guy
😂😂
Holy crap. Harrison Ford and now David Byrne.
The moment Conan said he interviewed someone who rides a bike in NYC, I knew it was going to be David Byrne! 💪
This is actually the most lucid, and "non-eccentric" I've ever heard David Byrne be as a guest. It's nice. Good interview.
it feels like all the guests want conan to think they're cool
@@kohalurker Well, he always was cool, but in a goofy, non-conventional sort of way. I guess sometimes he can just be a regular guy. Or maybe age has tempered him.
@unknownunremarkablekoha I mean it's David Byrne. He's a cool guy. Just a weirdo too which is ok and what makes his music awesome
@@lesclaypoolonbass9431 "Quirky". 🙃 Oh man, do I miss Talking Heads...
He can be super normal, I think the weirdo is a bit of an act or protest or both. He can be more social than his interviewers, on many occasions over the years. I love all versions of David.
I saw David on a bike in Manhattan twice. I regret not saying something to him but I probably would have said something stupid. I've been listening to Talking Heads my whole life
I really liked him. Knowing he bikes everywhere, I now love him.
He’s written a book about cycling too!
@@TheRaspberryExperiment what's it called?
@@davidhurtado2725 Bicycle Diaries!
He even designed some bike racks in NYC and some are still there i think
Why? What does bicycling have to do with your estimation of people?
David Byrne is one of the very best. Listen to his album Feelings if you haven’t
His single "Lazy" really resounded with me. I even felt like it was about me.
Seriously though, I have enjoyed this man's music my whole life and as a young man in regional Australia I got the first taste of "New York cool" as it were. Before I'd even heard of The Velvet Underground or Worhol, even the Ramones. It was all about Psycho Killer and Letting The Days Go By for me. I applaude David Byrne and thank him for that gift in my tender youth. I'm a complete loser now but that's another story
I saw David Byrne on a bike in NYC when I was crossing on a zebra with friends at the green lights. And as we all were huge fans we got overexcited and one friend said - OMG David Bowie!
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR DAVID BRYNE
Same as you ever were
Two American gems!
He sounds so much more normal and mellow than all his old interviews. If this guy was in the Talking Heads in the '80s, they may still be touring, or at least more friendly with each other.
The best way to make Bryne roll his eyes and give a slight sneer is to tell him, "Can I get your autogragh? My grandma loves Devo!"
The burning of Byrne. Many do it. It's a crowded house.
???
Falco is rolling in his grave
I like that Conan calls himself a "biker". 😄
David probably means "no one has ever had a bad day on a bike" as long as you are rich and successful and live a free, independant life and are your own boss plus you get to express yourself creatively and have your say, only people listen to what you have to say based on your career. The rest of us shleps with stress, family problems, relationship issues, job problems, money problems, existential dread about human society and the planet can have a bad day on a bike just easy as you like. Talking Heads '77 was one of the first vinyls I ever owned, I still have it, but 'More Songs about Buildings and Food' is probably my favourite album of all time. That record brings me joy and happiness on an ongoing basis throughout the last 40+ years. Thank you David and Talking Heads.
Conan said that not David
I am glad he is still around.
Davids been riding his bike in NyC since the late 70s , I’d imagine he knows the city very well
_Did he bring the big suit!?_
_DID HE BRING THE BIG SUIT!?_
For fun, when I had no cycling friends, lol, I figured out the bike circ for Manhattan Island (a bike ride around the perimeter of Manhattan Island that tries to stay as close to the rivers as possible; circ is short for circumnavigation; I was inspired by the Manhattan Island kayak circ). And then, when I knew the route by heart, and made it more rider friendly (had to relax the "stay as close to the river as possible" requirement in some places - you know, for safety), I took people on this ride. I led the ride 5 times and took 50+ people overall around the island.
The east side had a lot of gaps in cycling infrastructure, but on the west side you could ride from Battery Park (southernmost tip) to Inwood Hill Park (northernmost tip) without leaving the bike path.
I'm no longer in NYC, but if Conan sees this and wants to do the ride, I'll find a way to get back there and take him on this ride, which I lovingly called Bike the Big Apple.
It doesn't have to be filmed at all, but if it were it'd be the spiritual successor to "Conan becomes a bike messenger" lol.
That sounds really cool! I would love to take that ride.
@@JillKnapp Totally! I'm no longer in NYC and the last time I did the ride was in like 2020, so I'm not sure if my route is still valid, but I can give tips and answer questions re: the ride.
Would recommend you tackle the west side part first. Start at Battery Park and ride the Hudson River Greenway North to the red light house under the GWB. That part is pretty flat. Then there's a little bit of navigating to do to get to Inwood Hill Park.
Hopefully the entire length of this path is open, but there had been times when I did the ride that there were detours, so be prepared to adapt/improvise lol.
Lmk if you have any Qs and be safe.
Also a heads up, there are times the route requires you to carry your bike up or down stairs jfyi.
The next step would be to refigure out the west side part. There are a lot of gaps in the west side bike paths and you will need to ride in the street , so you will need to be comfortable with riding with car traffic (jfyi). It's a risk you assume. If you are not comfortable with that, I don't recommend it.
If you want the specific routes I did, lmk, but jfyi, they may be outdated, they are not entirely in bike paths, you may have to carry bike up or down stairs, you may pass through what some people might say are rougher neighborhoods/projects (I never had an issue, but you never know), etc. You assume the risk(s) lol.
I really enjoyed figuring out the route and then eventually taking people on it because you get to see all of Manhattan Island in one day and it is quite diverse in architecture, neighborhoods, demographics, etc. You also generally ride alongside the river(s), so you're seeing across the rivers to NJ, the Bronx, Queens, or Brooklyn as you ride. And it's a pretty flat 32 miles, so even relative novices could do it. In 5 of these rides, I guided 50+ people overall around the island.
DAVID BYRNE OMFG
🎶He's a man,he's a piece of cake🎶
Wild Wild Life oh oh ❤
If you would have told me back in the 80s I'd be watching a David Byrne interview on a little rectangular handheld device in the future...
It would’ve been like a TH / Byrne song
A guy who plays the flute on one leg. Those beatings in school for that guy must have been endless
That's a nice Guayabera he's wearing
I'm also an avid biker....but no way I'd do it in a busy city. But its a great way to get around Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
When your two favorites collab 😊
Why are people here to say they have no idea who David Byrne is? And yet people are on their phones 12-hours a day, but don't know who to find out new things? Very strange times we live in.
fun interview
Listening to "Like Humans Do" still reminds me of using Windows XP.
Seton from the Dan Patrick Show once said he almost hit David while driving in NYC. Now I completely believe that story lol.

No one’s ever had a bad day on a bike? My life is different
Hard agree!
I got my two front teeth knocked out in a bicycle accident at age 9 and now when people look at me they think I'm on drugs because my partial plate doesn't fit correctly and has caused myriad dental problems. The decision to ride a bicycle literally changed my life and how people perceive me.

David Byrne needs a friend
I hate people in a bike lane on the wrong side of the road. Should be as just as enforced as cars going the wrong way.
Mostly stops at red lights...
Steven King did
I agreed until he said he wouldn't advocate getting on a bike if you've never done it before. how would you know it's a great way to get around if you don't try it? But yes, these are conversations that need to be had on a grand stage to make cycle commuting more "acceptable" to the general public (not that it isn't acceptable, but people love to assume that cycle commuting is too dangerous or too this or too that and most of those challenges can easily be overcome if you just get on a bike and see that it's not so bad), because we desperately DESPERATELY need more people to get out of their multi-ton climate controlled metal weapons and onto more sustainable transport like cycling, walking, and public transit. Cars themselves aren't the problem, but rather that EVERYONE is forced into a car because of either our bad North American urban planning, or societal norms that desperately need updating. Thank you guys.
edit: changed U agreed to I agreed. dont know how i didnt catch that.
I'm also your friend
It's easy.
david you should have mentioned a trick with razor blade and a blood all over your face
I got hit by a biker, and all he said was area you alright, and i am not even sure he said it, i think his friend said it, to distract me and the guy who hit me, left, i was walking across the street. I believe in karma so the guy who hit me. well, u know

I'm confused, did he say his family left Scotland when he was 2? or his own child was 2? How would he have a scottish accent if he left at 2 which is what I thought he said? probably from his parents, living with them, but nothing to do with "living in scotland"
He left when he was 2, his parents moved to a neighbourhood that had a lot of Scottish immigrants when they moved to Canada so he was around the accent all the time when a kid
