The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is well known for its historic trains and gorgeous scenery, consistently ranking as one of the best train rides in all of America, especially in Autumn. Due to its popularity in the Autumn season, with the aspen trees quickly turning gold practically within the blink of an eye, the C&TS naturally attracts more visitors and riders than usual and thus requiring the railroad to lengthen their trains past the typical 8 car train. Therefore an additional engine is necessitated for the heavy climb (up to 4%) to Cumbres Pass. In this video, ex-Denver, Rio Grande & Western K-36 Class 2-8-2 “Mikado” locomotives #484 and #488 work together to climb the steep grade with their 11 car train between Chama, NM and Cumbres Pass, CO, through classic spots along the San Juan Extension of the D&RGW narrow gauge. Now, please enjoy this exciting video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on October 8th, 2022.
