    That was a very interesting, honest evaluation by a knowledgeable artist! Metallic water-based paints have been sort of a "holy grail" for a long time, and there is definitely a range in performance. We wonder if some of these colors would have a different appearance on another paper, or maybe layered over an opaque, light paint. It would also be interesting to see if there is a difference in permanence/lightfastness between brands. It is nice that artists have so many choices for metallics now- we've come a long way from grinding gold leaf with salt to make powder, or wrapping leaf around coals and burning them to pick out the grains of metal pigment!

  • @electrichen6243
    @electrichen6243 Před rokem +14

    To get the best out of metallics you need to pre-wet them and let them sit for a while before using. I tend to mix metallics into other colours so some of us the subtleness means it doesn't overpower the main colour. As they're from the UK they will be more expensive to you, American brands are very expensive here in UK, so you need to allow for that in your costings (it's a little unfair otherwise).

      Well, I guess Jennifer knows how to work with metallics, given she's already shown us several other brands - Kuretake, Niji, Finetec, Paul Rubens, Masters' Touch etc!
      I'm also in the UK, and often find it galling that some British goods are actually _cheaper_ in the US than they are here - simply due to the economy of scale the US market offers. For one British product (I forget which now) even with import fees/duty/VAT it was actually _cheaper_ for me to re-import it into the UK from the US, than it was to buy it here. Madness! 🇬🇧🤪🇺🇸

    If you want to be blown away by sparkle and shine you should get the Van gogh iridescent/metallic pocketbox along with the Artist grade Rembrandt special effects set which has the watercolors with glass! CHAMELEON COLORS! SPARK! IRIDESCENT! I finally added the special effects pallet to my collection and oh my goodness! They are so beautiful and blinding in good light ✨️. I think you would absolutely adore them Jennifer ❤️ you can mix the chameleon colors with other metallics or colors for interesting effects. You can insert little pieces of sponge on the empty spaces of your big Cotman box (that is, if you don't add other half pans) It will keep the pans in place and will give you a place to dry your brush while painting. Great section about the anti-scammer alerts. Thanks for the review!

    I bought a cheap but really nice 48 set of watercolors by a brand named emooqi. It was 42 regular colors and 6 metallic. The metallics were beautiful. Then about a month ago i noticed that emooqi released a small tin (with 3 mix spaces instead of the usual 2) of just the metallics, a 12 set with 2 waterr brushes for 19 dollars.I immediately snatched them up. I have not tried the 12 set yet but if they are anything like the 6, they are fantastic. I dont have the paul ruebens for comparison but i do have 4 of the finetec/coliro sets.

    Many thanks, Jennifer and Steve, for this video - especially for the scam alert!
    I'm puzzled about that Cotman box - because when I bought it, many years ago, the Cotman range had 48 colours, so the box was full. Over the years, they've reduced the set, so I'm really surprised that they haven't changed the size of the box! Mine now has my 'play paints' in it - colours I've picked up as freebies here and there - as well as my usual 12 full pan colours for general working, but it takes up a lot of room on the table, so I always remove the fold out flap!

  • @GLPvillainess
    @GLPvillainess Před 6 měsíci

    I could be mistaken, but I believe these Cotman Metallics are not necessarily meant to be used alone, and if they are, they would be used as a thicker mix. That's how they're shown anyway, like "paint". The W&N website says that they "can be used interchangeably with all our current Watercolour ranges, to add highlights and unique shimmering effects". I think these are supposed to be like the Rembrandt Watercolor Special Effects pan set; so most likely the Cotman set is a competing product. The demo I watched a while back showed how they (the Rembrandt set) can be mixed with watercolors to add some shimmer. Also, when you have an iridescent, there is little to no pigment; it's meant to be used as a medium to add shimmer. I have an acrylic set like that. Different products for different things. Schmincke has some nice metallics in jars. It's a powder you mix with water, as thick or thin as you like. Thank you for the demo---subscribing!

I did get the Paul Rubens metallic's from a review Lindsay Weirich (The Frugal Crafter) Did a while ago, I mostly got it for the Pink Palette for my wife's collection of DaVinci paints! Cotman colours have more binder added than artist quality which means the colours are diluted. When you add water you are diluting further touch a piece of paper towel or t shirting rag to the base of the brush hairs it helps remove some of the water allowing the Cotman colours to intensify

    Someone probably has already mentioned this, but you can make your own pan paints from tube paints. I like pan paints mainly because they are easier to travel with (especially when there was a strict limit on liquids, gels, and pastes you can carry onto airplanes). While I still buy replacement pans for certain brands of paint, I now usually buy watercolor in tubes. I buy a bunch of cheap half or whole pans (you can get them with or without magnet strips), and I squeeze out the paint into the pans and let them dry. Depending on the size of the tube, you can get several "servings" In the long run, you can end up saving some money. Because they are watercolor, they reactivate over and over just like the ready-made pans. The only paints I have had issues with the colors not being very good after being dried, are those really, really cheap paints that are mostly filler to begin with. There are also a few paint brands that use binders where the paint never will dry completely--like M. Graham that uses blackberry honey in it's formulation. Sennelier also has honey in it, but I've managed to dry them out successfully. Winsor & Newton Cotman tube paints re-wet beautifully--there's a couple of purples in that line that are my favorites.

Metallics are hard for numerous mediums, as are neons, I feel, so it certainly isn’t a good representation of the brand on a whole but still… I do wonder why such a well renewed brand would give the go-ahead to put this kind of -very different- quality paint on the market.

    I actually like the subtlety of these Cotman's better than the high-bling of some of the others. I think they'd fit in better with a traditional watercolor painting if you just want to add a few highlights or reflections. OTOH, one could always mix the brighter metallics with regular watercolor to tone them down, so going with a brighter version does give you more options.

    The W&N Cotman paints are not that great for sure. Especially the dried pans. However several professional water color artists still use Cotman tubes. Depending in pigment used, most are very lightfast, even though they don't have the extra pigment load of artist grade. The sparkle type paints are not really lightfast for those who are concerned about that.

    I also laminate my swatch cards to keep with the paint boxes. Curious to know what laminating machine do you use. Mine sometimes have little areas where it isn't too clear as if it wasn't sealed all the way. Thanks for your videos which I enjoy watching. I do miss your live shows and the live comments as I can watch you reply to them and explain a bit more.

Do I need to be a member or just subscribed? I'm sorry this is my very first time fan Gillingham any channel on you tube.. I just adore you guys and I find your tutorials soooo useful, relatable and easy to follow and see real results and I've fallen in live with swatching!!!

    Try the koi watercolors. They have a pan set of metallics and neon. They are pretty awesome in my opinion

    Have you considered (if you haven't done so already) to make a video about the most economical pencil sets?

    I was unfamiliar with metallic paints. I guess my mind just runs to pencils and markers. I really must look at the Paul Reuben paints

    The metallics are a bit disappointing especially on the black. Cotman is the "student" line, however Windsor and Newton usually makes a pretty good product, even in student lines.

    Am I right to think that you are sending your price to give away out of USA bc of the shipment and the custom fees to pay? 😊from Canada in Quebec!

  • @nadinesawtell3267

    “Cotman” paints are student grade To use them you need to draw excess water from the base of the brush. This will increase the intensity of the colour. The unfortunate thing is you will get a large number of fugitive colours
