You were talking about repairing stainless trim in your last video and I just noticed the dents in I noticed that the headlamp ring and it reminded me! I don't know if you've heard of the channel ''Cold War Motors'' out of Alberta, Canada. Scott, the channel owner is restoring a 1960 Fury basically from a pile of rust he literally found in deep doo doo! It was setting sunken in to the rockers in a horse corral for about 40 years! Once he got the body and paint done which was a huge undertaking in itself he had all of the stainless trim to restore, I f you go to his channel and find the 30 or so Fury restoration videos I'm sure you will see him doing some of the trim, The man is a master at repairing stainless! I learned so much from watching him just like I'm learning a lot from watching you! I'm 65 and started cutting and welding at 10 years old helping my friends dad building Stock car frames out of rectangular and round tubing! I loved helping build those cars and wanted to build my own and race but I started to realize that we spent all week repairing the damage from the weekend of racing! That got old and I noticed that all of the guys around the garages and track could find mechanics for their race cars and Hot Rods if they couldn't do something but they all complained they couldn't find body men and painters, I liked to straighten the dents out of the race cars and at that time gas weld panels together when a part couldn't be repaired so I went into body, frame, and later unibody, suspension and paint repair and I restored cars for myself for all of these years but I'm still learning more every day!
@RebelDeuce Everything he does is total perfection, he needed a right quarter for the Fury but he only one he could find was a four door quarter, He welded it to the car and I would have cut the skin off of the rear door because it would be the right shape for the front part of the quarter and then just make the lower part to join the rocker panel but he hand made the whole front half of the quarter panel and wheel opening and it was perfect! His metal shaping is amazing, Now he's even doing the upholstery work!
I've been watching all sorts of welding videos, this method is how I've gone about my VW Golf restoration as well.
Lap welds and leaving as much metal on as possible seems the best way to me, see people grinding most of the weld back off but as you say it's taken all the structure/ support out of the repair.

Right on Chad. In the welding business we call that "gap rod" and its great for stick welding too. Not on pressure stuff obviously but for repair and fab work it's a must.
way back in the day i remember using a torch and coat hangers to weld an exhaust system it actually is not Ideal but it works.
I will be the first to admit I didn't like the headlights at first, but I don't hate it, looks much better than I was thinking. The visions is in the eye of the creator. Looking forward to seeing more on this build.

Nice job with the coat hanger, I've used the same technique with the heavy gas welding wire combined with the stick welder - all about using what you have to hand. Thanks for sharing.

Ahhhhhh. Coat hangers and shear persistence. Now one of these days you should try the art of working lead. What's funny is that there were alot of body bangers years ago from the old days that just couldn't get the feel for using Bondo, but they were true masters with lead. And most of the guys that learned in working Bondo, could never master the lead. My how the world has changed. Lol

Is there any excuse for pinholes...should I fill them all on a partial door skin before any resin? Last question, I'm on a 69' Chevy Panel and when I add a patch panel would you ever cut and weld on a body line or should I cut and weld elsewhere? I'm new to this but you are a great motivator! You could put a copper spoon behind that to weld up the pinholes, or make some with 4mm sheet
where do you find metal coat hangers? all of mine lately have been plastic. Is there an alternative?

It cuts quicker so creates less heat

It's always the big debate to lap weld are butt weld,, I feel the lap weld is the strongest ,fastest and easiest way to go. A lot less chance of burning through also

@RebelDeuce The amount of time lost grinding plus the cost of grinding wheels and disk it's well worth it, plus the quailty is so much better

Yo Chad with the grinder. Do you ever do the figure 8 method to make sure its somewhat flat? Im a woodshop guy who has a Custom Furniture WoodShop. Was just wondering. Cause me and my business partner for our company use the figure 8 method when grinding. Cause obviously wood grinds alot easier then metal. And we cant have any buddles in the wood tables when you want them completey flat. And what sucks about grinding wood or grinding exposy.....is its easier to make buddles haha. Id say Cedar is the only one we dont grind the exposy or the wood down. You would tear the shit out of the wood. We usually with cedar wood. Just go straight to the 40 grit 6 inch sander. Sand it all the way to 120 220 5inch small sander.

Maybe weld the inside of the hood to give the seam more strength.
more weld more heat more chance for warpage

iv been doing this for like 15 years, and about 3 years ago i started wearing muffs. im 28 now, and looking back, i wonder why it took me so damn long to do it.

your not far from tig welding. you have filler rod. the tig moves metal by itself, you use the fill rod when you move to much metal.
