- We love Atlanta Dragway! So many memories created here for us on and off camera. Like many of you, we're sad to see it go. This video is our last time at the drag strip, at the SCT Atlanta event, before it closes and gets torn down. Not only did we document the entire event, we also got to hear some great stories form people that have been going to the strip for years. We hope you enjoy the video!

I only heard maybe 3 people happy the track was getting leveled. nHRA fucked us and chose to sell to SK battery so they could build warehouses.

21 years of racing and spectating at that track, and the first track I ever took my kids to... Also the first track that my parents got to see me race at that are now passed... I will forever hold onto the memories

Hop in and grab some loose dirt and pop it in a jar, the track might be gone but the memories done have to be. Its not much but its a piece of you and your familys history as little as it is. Sorry to see it go for you and yours but it doesnt only have to be a memory you can grab a little slidpce of it.

It's always nimby people that move near the tracks and then complain about the noise. Some people just hate it when others have fun.
So damn sad they're tearing down Atlanta dragway. The first time I went to the track was in 97' for what I think was a Nopi Import drag race. Made my first pass in 98' and used to go to the test and tunes as much as possible. It hurts my heart to know it's going to be leveled.

I live in a small town you've visited before for Anarchy No Prep (Union Grove, WI; Great Lakes Dragaway) and it is a constant battle of the village vs the track. The track is redoing the entire drag strip in the off-season this year, but also the village has been going CRAZY with housing additions, many very close to the strip. I'm doing what I can to support the track and hope it lives on here for many more years to come, but there is certainly an ominous cloud developing.
The same ppl that complain about the noise and the jet cars, in particular, have never even been there to experience it despite many living here for their entire lives (and they aren't young). shame.
Good luck it’s happening at Joliet speedway they are closing it and might keep the dirt track for demo derbys it’s bc a semi warehouse hub is going on and the houses are being built city folks complaining etc etc and money talks so if enough people get paid off then things move forward
Look if you think carefully about it the Epa is going after raceing. At the same time tracks are closeing once there is nowhere to legally race then there is no more reason we can modify our cars. The EPA wins with the excuse that we have no reason to modify cars as there is not anyplace to race them legally.
In Anchorage, Alaska, Merrill Field is the busiest small plane airport in the world. Back in the '90's some lawyers who bought houses close to the airport sued to have it shut down. The judged immediately tossed the case with prejudice (so the people being sued could get their money back), because, "you knew the airfield was there, and everyone knows airfields are noisy places". Funny as all hell, and no-one has complained since then. Just need to find a judge with balls.
Put a sign up: "We were here first" and give the middle finger to anyone bringing a complaint or lawsuit.

They want the land for more housing from what I have heard, but the weird thing is, there is tons of available land all around that area. There wasn't any real need to close this track except if NHRA wanted out or something.

@@Jonathan_Camps There really isn't much around there until the new apartment/town houses they built up the hill. It was a mostly empty area. I think you are right and NHRA just wanted the $ and was gonna get while the gettin's good.

What awesome story about the guy in the vette. So we grew up racing with Jeff Hagaman at Hickory Motor Speedway my dad was out in his chevelle and did an awesome burnout then Jeff brought out a brand new 03/04 vette and did a similar burnout, melting the tires down and the crowd went crazy. So that was an awesome story specially with the scentement there.

Only met one customer with a modded Mercedes (c63 wagon) and that’s because her husband drove it too. She said his modded 720s “couldn’t carry enough groceries.” 😂

I’ve been going to this track since I can remember! It was an amazing place that kept me happy and stress free, I really hate to see it go, but we got that round 1 win in super comp Saturday the 17th and that’s probably the best way we could’ve ended it!
I've been going to Atlanta Dragway since it opened some great memories there sad to see it go.

This happened in Utah. We literally don’t have a track in or “near” Salt Lake City. Let’s just say street racing is Alive and well.

Yup, we just lost Milan Dragway here in Michigan too, went the way of the old Detroit Dragway.
We need more condos, apartments and shopping centers... that way when they're abandoned they can be used for crack houses.

It comes down to the track owners to pay the bills. Unfortunately they're not generating the revenue that they once were and expenses are higher than ever. Milan had $2.5m in unpaid bills and liens.
Milan Dragway has new owners, they already paved the pits from the staging lanes all the way past the snack shack.
They got rid of the motocross track that did nothing but dust the track down and they plan on Mud Bogs.
The previous owners were in hock to the Hard Core Pawn guy Les Goldman, the bill came due and into receivership the track went.
The new owners are car guys and will reopen the track as was only better managed.
These new owners are heros to a lot of folks.
@@jerryfrederick6610 that's great news. I lived out in St. Clair Shores for many years and Milan didn't have a good reputation at the time, like 2012-ish. I'm on the west coast now, wish I could share these smooth roads with all you guys back in Michigan 😅

I’ve done all the line marking for this dragway the last 4 years. Damn shame to see it sold off and demolished. Plus there goes a customer.
I’m only 17 but of my main goals in life is to bring back as many old and abandoned dragstrips/circle tracks as I can just to revive some of the history and so future generations can experience/learn it. I’ve been researching, documenting and visiting quite a few abandoned dragstrips so far.

I was there for the last NHRA event. It's sad to see this track go, my dad and I used to race there just about every weekend.
Its so sad that its getting torn down. Ive been going since highschool in the early 2000's and only live 20 minutes away. Hopefully the plans to build another one around here come to fruition.

@@billmadison2032 chameleon a few years ago was 400.00 qt. ( just the Base ) ! A lot more now, I'm assuming...that was about 10-12 yrs.ago! ( I used to be a painter ) . It takes a dk. or black Base under it. Then add the clear coat on top. Get your wallet out.!

That diesel truck in the burnout comp has one of the cleanest tunes I’ve seen
All of the air plus spray. No sense in holding egts past 1300f for 2 minutes. Motor will pop before the tires. Burnouts are a different game than anything else.
Gonna miss that place, went racing there earlier this year since I havnt been there since nhra event in 2005
So ad to see this great racetrack close down. I went though this on the West Coast when Fremont drag strip, then named Baylands ended. I grew up at that track, racing and testing until it closed in 1988. It was family, and I still miss it to this day. Cheers Dale Walker

Really wish track owners would would stop selling to people who have no intention of keeping the track open. With the shit the epa is pulling itself only gonna get harder to build track in the future we should be preserving the ones we have not tearing them down.

Nice to see all those Buick’s! You rarely see them anymore. Back in the 90s the tracks were all fox bodies and Buick’s. Some legendary Buick vs Ford showdowns took place throughout the 90s. Mines been stowed away in the garage the last 20 years and I’ve been debating wether to update everything resting then stock 109 block, or shelving it with 24k miles and dropping a turbo ls in it, for easy hp numbers
More private "backyard" tracks will be a thing in the future dont sweat it boys🤙🏻

Was told the other day the plan was for the apartments but the EPA wasn't going to approve new sewage ponds or something so think this is going to be warehousing for the new battery plant but have no for sure proof on that just what I was told

If I pooped money I would definitely open my own drag strip for the culture and just provide a top notch track for people to enjoy.
I live right next to a dragstrip I work 6 days a week only off Tuesday I love to drag race more than anyone but my great pay job has me off during the week so I'm limited to vacation or personal days to drag race. I know there's a lot of people like me, that love the sport but with a family can't race cause of the job or the man 😢
A Buick GN was the first car I ever fell in love with. Walked by one every day on the way to school for years.
The front-wheel drive finals 😂😂 that's the funniest race I've ever seen. And the Mustang doing Mustang things at the end to put the cherry on top for the video.

Use to go to Atlanta Dragway back in the mid-late 90s for the Fun Ford Weekend events. Had a blast with all my friends and some crazy nights staying at the HoJo motel down the road those some 25 years ago. Good memories.

Milan Dragway here in Michigan was also put up for sale earlier this year after it didn't open for the summer. Last I heard it was possible sold and we will have to wait to see if it reopens as a running dragstrip in the future. Sucks we are losing all these nostalgic sanctioned tracks from the early days of drag racing.
That real green Cobra stick shift is a badass car, the dude seems like a cool enough guy, would have loved to see him won
I've spent so many Friday nights at test & tunes there in my 20's. It sucks to see it go, especially with drag racing making such a comeback.

Same …this sucks ! I live just a few exits down off hwy 53. My house one minute from Road Atlanta ( the road course track ) and some people complain about the noise from Road Atlanta events and that little 3/8 mile oval track that now holds cart racing and drift racing events. Used to be “Lanier Raceway” and I helped a friend in the late model and super late model races there all the time. They ruined that too under new ownership
The 87' buick that was going for a 10 flat was pristine!! My father had a two tone white b/blue top 1982 buick Cutlass supreme. The bottom was a pearl white and top was a royal blue ocean effect,18' on front and 22's on back.it had duel chrome pin stripes and the car was in perfect condition.

Houston honestly makes sense. The first time I went there I knew it wasn't long for this world being right in the middle of all the industrial facilities. Definetly still sucks but it makes sense, not sure on the story behind Atlanta closing though.

have you not read what the EPAs legislative ambitions are for the 10 - 15 years? For example banning the owner of private racecars with internal combustion and making it more expensive to make the cars comply with regulations, How do you think the owner of the strip was pushed into a situation where he needs to sell it taxes, regulatory costs to allow it to continue operating such as pollution, noise regulations, when the are allowed to operate and for how long and other regulations even the necessary costs of keeping it open and maintenance the price of everything has increase hugely everything from track prep chemicals to safety equipment and the fuel needed to ems vehicles operating do you now see that the EPA has a part in this

Lot of guys gonna go back to street racing. Stop destroying tracks or we will find a place to race anyway. I'm against street racing generally but you take all the tracks we are left with the street.
Right.. and charge 40-50 bucks to get one pass sometimes in a 5 hrs period...no wonder everyone Mexico races.
I hate to see any race track close down. Be it drag, circle, or dirt, that is just part of history going away. I just hope people keep watching your videos so that this part of Americana never goes away.
