Personally, I would "paint" it with a borax and water mix ( a flame retardant, antifungal, insect killer) let it dry, then paint or shellac it.....but that's just me.

You can definitely use magazine papers. However, magazine papers are usually harder and hence braiding them could be difficult. Whereas, braiding newspapers are easy as they are softer n thinner. I hope this reply will help you. Thank you for liking my work... keep watching!
