  • We were invited back to Barry Cone's Brick Mountain Railroad in Connecticut once again this year. Barry and the crew have been busy this past year building on to the mainline! They have also been busy working on the 16 inch gauge. Come along and see what's new this year at Brick Mountain Railroad and what can be done on a very large budget. Contrast this with our regular videos of what can be done on a very tight budget.

I am amazed something like this exists. The amount of time, money, space needed and resources that have gone into creating this is just incredible.
All the working, full-size, gates, lights and accessories, not to mention the track, buildings, trains, rolling stock, etc. must've cost a small fortune.
This is just so cool. Thanks for a great video and sharing with us... 🚂

The steam engines were good to see!
Steam is not as popular as it once was at these tracks. Other kinds of propulsion are slowly taking over. Mainly due to steam's long start-up times and high maintenance.
The good news is that there are still new steam engines being built, and the old ones eventually get rebuilt. They just don't come out as often as they did 10 years ago.

The railroad is about 12 or 13 years old. Barry started building it about the same time I started building the MLBK. We were members of the same club at the time. Barry's railroad has a very high budget and a very capable paid staff. I think he also has some volunteers, but I'm not sure. When Barry wants something done, they plan it out and get on the project. They work all week long and sometimes even on the weekends.

Plastic ties are nice. Tie plates are molded in, so you don't have tie plates migrating. They don't rot.
The cons are that they are not as strong as wood, so they rely more on the rail for strength (not really a problem with the popular 1 inch tall rail that can handle 650-lbs per axle), the price (4x the price of pressure treated wood) and lack of support for the lighter rail that I use.
Solid plastic wood is available but it's even more expensive.
I have a stack of plastic ties that I can't use on the MLBK.

@@MillBrookRailroad Good info... I may end up using solid plastic anyway, because I plan on using 7.25" gauge to represent 24" or 30" gauge track, so I'll need the ties to be longer than the std gauge proportion, molded plastic ties. Plan on using the 1" tall rail, with custom steel switch frogs.

@@WHJeffB Accu-ties are 16 inches long. That's narrow gauge length for the scale you're doing.

@@MillBrookRailroad Hi there. Have used reconstituted plastic deck boards to build the outside railway but at $140 a pop are too expensive but last a long time. They are 6 inches wide and 1 inch deep.

No. It is a private track, but access can be available for anyone interested in joining the hobby through NorthEast Live Steamers. www.northeastlivesteamers.org

There's something unsettling about this video. The trains appear toy-like, as if they were an attraction for children. However, only adults can be seen, it seems that I didn't see a single child or teenager.

Hello from Ohio I want to know Is why does everyone wants to ride toys when they can ride the real thing

    • @MillBrookRailroad
      @MillBrookRailroad  Před 11 měsíci

You can't always ride the real thing, and you definitely can't run what you build at home on a full sized railroad. Half the fun is in building something you can ride on. The other half of the fun, for me at least, is using a backyard railroad to do backyard chores. Something you will see in some of my other videos.
