The title "Nunc Dimitis," meaning "Now You Dismiss" in Latin, originates from the biblical Canticle of Simeon found in Luke 2:29-32. This passage recounts the devout Simeon encountering the
infant Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem. Moved by the Holy Spirit, Simeon recognizes Jesus as the fulfillment of God's promise of salvation. Overwhelmed with gratitude and joy, Simeon expresses
readiness to depart in peace, having witnessed the salvation of the Lord. Orbán's composition draws on this profound biblical moment, aiming to capture its spiritual essence through music.
Orbán employs various musical techniques to convey the spiritual themes encapsulated in the biblical text. Notably, he utilizes modal harmony to create a sense of reverence reminiscent of medieval chants, transporting listeners to the sacred atmosphere of the Temple. Additionally, Orbán's rich harmonic textures and lush choral arrangements contribute to the evocation of awe and wonder,
mirroring the solemnity of Simeon's encounter with Jesus. Through his composition, Orbán invites listeners to reflect on the profound implications of Jesus' birth for the world, urging them to contemplate the significance of salvation and divine fulfillment.
