The movie really should've been a mini-series because there's a lot in the book about the boys and their relationship. Like the emails , that goes on for MONTHS in the books and they do bring up many historically gay figures as well as very important insecurities for both boys. There's also Henry's depression, his father's death, and his familial situation. There's Alex's internalized homophobia, his career and life aspirations, and what his relationship means for his mom's campaign.
The flirting was also much more genuine and actually funny.

@killyourdarlingsnot to mention, kinda missed the mark with the royal "pressure" breathing down on Henry’s neck thing, when there wasn't any. Kind of like how historians for the longest time tried to explain away Alexander the Great's long time lover Hephaestion or Achilles' relationship with Patrocles. But even without knowing explicitly the relationship those men had you could still read between the lines because for some reason while they erased the context of the relationship they still kept all the emotionally intimate moments and the strong grief these men experienced once their lovers died. I mean in all the translations of the Iliad Achilles still requests that when he dies his ashes should be placed in the same urn as Patrocles' ashes, which was something that Greeks only did if the person they lost was like their soulmate basically. It wasn't common and it held much significance when a request like that was made, but old timey historians and the movie Troy expect me to believe this was just familial love? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Everyone understands this is not supposed to be a serious movie and they're just happy to have a cheesy rom-com that they can watch when they're having a bad day. If anything, I think everyone in the cast has great chemistry and vibes (especially the two leads IMO), and I do enjoy seeing that 😊

I will say the “reason they hate eachother” is much more explored in depth in the books
Alex dislikes Henry because he was a dick to him when they first met and also because he’s tired of being constantly compared to Henry and having to try harder than him.
Henry never really dislikes Alex. He actually is attracted to him from their first meeting but was rude to him because he was still grieving his father. Then Alex was hostile to him from there on out and Henry just matched his energy because it was easier than admitting he had a crush on him.

as a queer person, this video had me cackling!!! and I appreciate you giving the movie credit where it's dueeee like yes the romance is rushed (on-screen at least cuz it takes them months to even have their first kiss in their real life), but for most romcoms that start out enemies to lovers I feel like that is the case bc you're 180-ing the emotions of the characters

I really really liked the movie ! The problem I had with the book was that it felt too much like a fan fiction, and I read a HUGE AMOUNT of it during my teenage years. All the dialogue felt a bit off and the personalities and the relationships felt… weird. Like not natural at all and it felt like the author tried too hard making her characters « cool ».
But in the movie I didn’t had this feeling at all. The chemistry between the two is very great and the story at a whole felt way more real ! Really enjoyed it I hope we will have a longer version or the movie number 2.
In the teaser we saw the ice cream scene but not in the movie, or did I missed something.
And I am a little bit sad they cancelled the Henry and his mom story, which I really liked in the book and the support she gave him in front of her mom (it s the queen in the book not the king)

I will say that it very much leans heavily into its teen/YA demographic. When I read it in high school I didn’t think the dialogue was unnatural, it sounded similar to stuff me and friends would say on the daily. I can definitely understand why it would feel awkward though. It probably was targeting the young audience that reads fanfiction 😂. Or it could be the reason you get fanfiction vibes is because many young authors get their start or practice using fanfiction these days.

You've prob heard by now, but the ice cream scene was released on YT by Prime as a deleted scene.
For the most part I agree with you. No disrespect to the book fans, but I simply didn't think the writing was there. While I kinda expected more from Matthew Lopez with his first film script (as co-writer--and director) just because his stage work (notably the epic 2 part gay drama The Inheritance) has been so strong, I thought it was a step up from the book. Curious what he does with his upcoming adaptation of a better written (and to be fair more "literary" targeted) gay themed book, Leading Men.

There are better characters and better plot lines and better storytelling… and the movie as a stand-alone isn’t bad, the book just sets an impossible standard. as someone who read the book it was a fun watch, even though they rushed some of the things (alex' years long "hate" obsession with henry, the rivals to lovers development, alex' relationship with nora, the election) but the movie is already 2 hours long, if they included everything it would be like 8 hours. maybe it would have worked better as a show, then they could have properly developed their relationship. but still i think it's obvious that the people involved care about the source material and tried to stat true to the book as much as possible. many lines were pulled directly from the book

  • Nelson Boubou
    Nelson Boubou Před měsícem +10

I watched it yesterday and I find that it was pretty good for a simple romantic comedy movie, it was really fun and the geopolitical stakes of their relationship grants a lot of tension to the story ( which is an interesting perspective when you think about it ) but sometimes I feel like it would have been better if it was a series format because some events happen a bit too fast and sometimes some characters supposed to be important for the story are here during the first half of the film and just straight up vanished from the rest of the story. Apparently the book is better and take more time to explore their relationship so I will check it.
I also really like as a bi person the that fact you reviewed it just as a love story of two people loving each other and not necessarily as a "queer love story", and l’m not gonna lie your humor is also pretty great the devil tango and street fighter part made me die of laugher

Honestly to me that was amazing. Instead of watching a queer movie with accurate representation of the world's reaction to the queer couple, including mostly tragedy and the usual "we can't love each other, we're never going to be accepted", I enjoyed watching a romcom with cliches. I'm honestly pretty tired to watch a movie with a gay couple, seeing them kiss and love each other, but also feeling bad about it, knowing that terrible things are going to happen to them. I've seen so many franchises like this portraying straight couples, but it's a first watching something queer that is just mainly cute, romantic and serene. Sometimes you just want to see two people in love, living their happy lives. I'm really glad I watched this.

i loved this movie and i've watched it like 6 times already lol it is a great adaptation but yeah, it moves veeery quickly and the book details everything way more deeply than the movie. But the book is one of the best romcoms i've ever read. I've made peace with adaptations and i appreciate them for what they are, i do think Taylor and Nick played Alex and Henry with so much love and care, and it was all i cared about at the end of the day, they did a fantastic job. Hoping for a sequel, they can use the bonus chapter which discusses many big life changes, there's many things yet to explore :)

This movie was pretty alright Alex. And I agree what you said near the end, I feel like their relationship was a little bit rushed and there wasn’t much build up but knowing that there’s only a specific amount to tell the story, it makes sense. I think these two actors did a great job playing their roles overall. Also! 10/10 I had good laughs from your video. Oh and now I’ve got my mom watching your videos and she also enjoys your jokes on our fave shows/movies. ❤️Keep it up Alex!!

I've always thought that RW&RB was always more rivals to lovers and not actual enemies to lovers so I feel like there are some people who are being given some unrealistic expectations coming in if they havn't read the book. It is quite cheesy, but tbh, I think that they really did do about as much as they could possibly fit from the book into a single movie. The book goes into a lot funnier plot and more emotional depth/character development but I think the movie did what it set out to do. Its fun, its happy, and generally unserious, and there really aren't that many queer movies like this so its definitly still a treat for me! Also, honestly as for as the book goes, when I first read it I thought that it had like a slightly wattpadish plot, but with ao3 level writing, so I still found it really enjoyable even though it was quite cheesy. the one thing about this movie that identified it as definitely like a prime movie was the music ( it sounded a bit hallmarky in places) which was honesty a bit funny😅.

So I first watched the movie before reading the book and I have to agree that everything in the movie was a bit rushed and some important characters were missing (e.g. June). I also think some important scenes came a bit too short like this whole email thing between Alex and Henry etc. Nevertheless, I think they did a very good job, considering the fact that they put a over 400 pages book into a 2h movie. Taylor and Nick were in my opinion perfect for the roles as Alex and Henry and even tough everything happened quite quickly, it was easy to follow and all the important scenes from the book were covered. All in all, for me personally, I can say that I absolutely loved the movie (I even had to watch it multiple times) but I still think a mini series would have probably been better since the book is so extensive

The enemies to lovers part definitely developed quick. But I think it was fine. In the books it´s made a lot more apparent that both of them were attracted to each other from the beginning. Especially Henry. They just never genuinely interacted and it turned into this rivalry thing.
I actually thought their text-flirting was done really well, loved how they portrayed that with them showing up around each other.

Love you Alex, you are as hilarious as always! As a person who has read the book, I can tell you that they skipped on so much! I swear they cut down like half of the story. Also in the book they're enemies for a much longer time. Mostly because Alex hates constantly being compared to Henry (if you wanna see the quote from the book it's in the end of the comment). I was really disappointed in the movie, they should've made it a series to show the rich characters Casey has created. Anyway sorry for the rant, keep up the great work Alex! ❤
QUOTE (Alex to Henry): "Doing what we do is fucking hard. But it's harder for me. I'm the son of the first female president. And I'm not white like she is, can't even pass for it. People will *always* come down harder on me. And you're, you know, *you*, and you were born into all of this, and everyone thinks your Prince fucking Charming. You're basically a living reminder I'll always be compared to someone else, no matter what I do, even if I work twice as hard" 😢

While I love the movie, it would've been better as a 8 episode series.
Like the tension and hatred towards each other could've been explored with more backstory.
The Vacation getaway sequence could've been a whole episode. The breaking ties bit could've been a whole episode before the finale. A lot of things could've been more explored more and paced better if this was a series than a 2 hour movie.

I really liked the movie. I do see what you mean about the part where everyone goes down on the dance floor except them and it's kind of weird, but I think it might have been an ode to West Side Story(in the 1961 version everyone else gets blurry except for Tony and Maria when they look at each other). I really liked how they portrayed their emails/phone conversation, like they were actually physically together. It's the best way to show online conversations honestly because it more visual. It's definitely supermarket sugar cookie sweet, but it was better than I thought it was going to be honestly and the writing was really witty. 7.5/10

in 2500+ comments, someone probably mentioned this already, but as someone who read the book first, the movie is SUPER surface level, and i agree, the progression from enemies to friends to lovers is super fast. everyone i know who watched it said the same, whether they read it or not. it happens much more gradually in the book. they still make out a bunch, but alex and henry do so much together physically before alex even thinks he might be into guys too. his "i'm bi" confession came so early in the movie in comparison. their emails were a much bigger deal too, and much more grandiose and romantic than in the movie where they were just flirting again. that being said, the movie was still satisfying to me. the sex scene was so beautifully done, and yes, so glad they included condoms and lube! i'm so curious about the opinions of people who watch the movie first and then read the book, because everyone i've talked to has read it first and said the book was better. i'm curious if it's the same the other way around. and yes, even though i'm also straight, i'm so here for gay people getting their cheesy 2000s style romcoms! they never go out of style!

If this was a series and not a movie I think they'd have included the other characters, plots and relationships like Luna, our lovely powder princess's backstory, June, etc etc including how the emails were more "insert jaw-droppingly sappy quote from queer historical figure" and not "hehe imma send you a box of thongs lol" and how this lasted FOREVER. The romance itself in the book definitely wasn't this rushed
People who have read the book seem to have very different views on the movie as compared to people who haven't, and that's okay because the context really makes a huge difference. Even tiny things like the travel sized lube or how the emails actually get leaked and who is responsible for it mean a lot to us who have read the book so I think we just subconsciously inserted them into the movie even though they weren't there so oopsies ig

Henry knew his family and possibly the public wouldn't approve so he warned Alex not to get close and when Alex almost said Love at the lake that's why Henry tried backing off, but he loved Alex too much by then. 14:31 this is actually a HUGE part of the book. the emails henry & alex send each other are SO SO important because they talk about queer historical figures & how they are erased and henry's depression & grief. have read the book 4 times and it is seriously one of the most beautifully written romcoms ever. the book also goes over alex's anxiety (& probably undiagnosed adhd) & his need for perfection & work to just make sense of things. i think the movie works well as an independent movie but really poorly as an adaptation. but that's what happens when you want to adapt a mostly epistolary novel.

As someone who was and still is absolutely in love with the book, I’m sad to say I didn’t love the movie quite so much. I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m still obsessed with it because it brought to life few of my favorite characters, but it’s just not good compared to the book. Kinda what Alex said, the romance part felt really rushed, but I also felt like after their break up, the movie didn’t give enough time for us to really see them broken (especially Alex) for the emotional payoff from them finally meeting again to feel significant.
Also the whole scene of them getting back together after Alex stormed the castle was sooooooo much better in the book!! Alex scream “then have me!” At Henry made my poor heart swoon! And Henry finally taking off that god damn signet!! It was just so perfect! Compared the movie scene felt a bit lackluster.
Also also and and, one of the biggest things in the book was their email to each other. They were beautiful love letters back and forth and I felt like the movie didn’t really capture it that well.
All in all, as a fan of the book, the movie wasn’t all that I hoped for, but I did still really enjoy it and I’m really happy that we have another queer movie out there and if it gets more eyes on the book, I’m happy 😊

While I'm not a guy, I am a queer woman and can confirm the way you handled the video and the jokes were very respectful but also funny and entertaining. Love your content, dude

Also queer person and yeah, I had to pause the video I was laughing so hard at “Time to think happy thoughts, Henry. I’m going in DRY.”

I literally only heard of this movie, thanks to Alex's video.
Ended up watching it, and actually enjoyed it. Had so much fun watching it, the banter and everything actually made me laugh at times. 😂
Full disclosure, I am a gay man though, so that might sway my opinion. 😂

it would've been better as a mini series so they could explore more like in the book

I didn’t realize how much happened in the book until I saw the movie. It cut out several main characters (ex Alex’s sister) and side plots and still pacing was so fast af

It's an awesome movie.... Both had chemistry from the first time they met so once misunderstanding is cleared, Henry propels towards Alex ❤

Alex never fails to rip me limb from limb as I slowly fade out of reality only being brought back to the pain of Alex mercilessly laughing calling out the lord as I bleed out on the floor 💯 🔥 🔥

god i'm so happy they adapted my favourite book into a movie, but i'm a little disappointed with how the story was handled
i understand that a lot of scenes need to be cut down and condensed for it to be turned into 1-2 hour long film, but wow they changed nora's personality entirely and minimised her, got rid of june completely and it felt like alex's personality and character progression was MUCH less expressed than it was in the book even though he is legitimately the main character of the story
i fucking love firstprince, they will always be my otp but man i do wish some scenes were fleshed out more - especially the emails
some of the sappy prose they send each other in the books will never fail to make me sob and the subject titles were absolutely golden
also alex's initial hatred is expanded on much more in that closet scene, talking about his insecurities with how they were constantly compared to each other that piled on top of that initial meeting

Honestly didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do, I LOVE the cheesiness and that they got their happy ending, compared to what they would’ve got in the real world
