  • Welcome to my first experiment using all still photographs. As a resident of Bakersfield and its surrounding area I really enjoy its rich history and I decided to make that my first subject in this format.
Bakersfield gets a bad rap. Some is deserved most is not. It has treated me well enough and I have enjoyed sharing its history with locals and now I hope those of you not from the area will enjoy some of its history as well.
Being my first time putting this format together it is a bit jittery and Pablo Galtes' store is EAST of Chester on 19th not north! I didn't catch that mistake until it was too late to change it.
So join me for a trip down History Lane in Bakersfield!

Sorry for the late reply. I was hospitalized at the time you commented.
I did a video about the 1952 Bakersfield earthquake in which I did a lot of before and after shots. It's in my "History" playlist.
I'm planning a followup to this video (1920 to present) and maybe I'll incorporate your idea!

How cool it would be to climb into a time machine go back to these times to experience how they lived. Very neat video Mr signal man. The time you spent getting all the pix together was nothing compared to how much was involved in the editing process.

Thank you for all of the history and research you've put into your stuff I've watched so far. The Bakersfield CA history 1&2. I've just saved to watch later the 1952 earthquake and the Tehachapi Train Tunnels.
I've been trying to get more information about my Great Aunt Mary Russell and her Home/Business which became the Fantasy Frocks Costume Shop after Mary passed away in the 1990's.
She never married, helped start the Original Bakersfield Business Conferences and I've been told she was the first Single, Female Marriage and Family Therapist in Bakersfield CA. Her house , fantasy Frocks is on 17th St just a block or 2 from the downtown greyhound bus station and is very similar inside and out to the Howell House.
So I just gave you a new area of Bakersfield history to maybe do a video of?
Your info and old photos are Great please do more and more.
    👍 Thank you.

Enjoyed this. I have a really good history book on Bakersfield, but many of those pics I've not seen before.
    Couple of suggestions :
It's my understanding the large main building at Pioneer Village was originally the Chamber of Commerce / visitors center back when the main or only north-south hiway thru the valley ran right by it. That would be an amazing pictorial history. One I'm sure very few know anything about.
Another content suggestion is the Lightspeed building on 19th.
It was originally commissioned by Standard Oil of California to be their headquarters. As I remember it had 3 large vault safes so it was used at one point to store (safekeep) the all or many of the land deeds for the Kern County Land Company, a d others too.
I forget now who built it, but he has streets & a city park named after him.
Aprox early 90s soon after Rob McCarthy bought it for cheap, it caught fire and developers (maybe the city too... or was it the Insurance company WA Ted to tear it down. So Rob quickly scrambled to get it listed as an Historical Landmark so that it had to be preserved.
Just walking in it is a museum in itself. I believe it is leased by a law firm now (Lightspeed evacuated Ca for Austin Tx 6 or 7 years ago).
Oh last thing, after showing and describing each picture, leave the picture a bit longer before switching to the next one so we can look at it longer letting what you just discribed have time to sync with the visual.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Před 4 lety +1

I had a tour set up with Pioneer Village but who knows when that will happen now. At some point I am planning more videos on downtown history but thats a ways off yet. I thought about running each photo for ten seconds but I try to be mindful of the length of videos. I wanted to get a feel for what people thought about the format before dragging them through a 20 minute piece! I will leave the pics up longer on my next adventure!
Thanks for the suggestions and for checking it out!

That was great I was hoping to see some pictures of the train station on baker and sumner. And maybe some of our founder Col. Baker and his hay fields.

Here are links to the video tour I did of it shortly before I retired. If you go to Facebook (Mark Mcgowan), and find the "Kern County of Old and I used to Cruise Chester groups, there are a lot of pix there of the depot.

This was great! I loved watching the video. I love local history. I really appreciated you showing the picture and then saying what is standing there now. My husband and I are talking about utilizing your video and going to these sites and seeing them in person; what was standing there and what is now standing there now. Do you..........or do you know of anyone in Bakersfield that looks at old pictures and then goes out to see what is there now? We would love to get more history. Please let me know!!!

I'm glad you enjoyed this! I have been planning another that covers 1920 to modern times. It seems every time I get ready to start it something pops up! Stay tuned though, I'll get to it!
Also, yes, plenty of people do that. If you have Facebook, go join the groups called "I Used to Cruise Chester Avenue" and "Kern County of Old". Lots of stuff like that there!
Thanks for checking out the channel!

I've been to all of these locations shown, a couple of them I can't actually picture the today spots in my head and yes I'll be going past them the next time I'm walking or biking downtown.

Very interesting. Real question here-Who were the contractors and architects for those old buildings? Gosh they were impressive. Today all we see are boxes for buildings downtown.

Yeah, love the history, what little of it there is. I hadn't realized that Bakersfield didn't really exist until sometime after the civil war. I guess I need to brush up on my California history, so thanks for setting me straight.

Hi Mark, nice slide show. I’m wondering what’s your source for the pictures? I’m particularly interested in the Edison photos at KR-1.
