Despite the French dept, despite embargoes, many countries have risen from much more difficult situations. For example Vietnam, Cambodia, Benin and Rwanda are listed as having a higher human developing index, GDP and per-Capita GDP than Haiti. Vietnam left Haiti in the dust years ago, even after having to rebuild after a devastating 13 year war that decimated the country. We all know what happened in Rwanda... Cambodia had 20% of their population mostly the upper and middle class exterminated and they still have a higher GDP than Haiti.
Haiti is endowed with very intelligent, creative people and has a rich culture, but when it comes to Governing, they have failed miserably. The leadership to tell you the truth has been pretty mediocre. Despite what the say about the "terrible" Duvalier years, in economic terms, Haiti was doing better back then, than it is now ! I have been watching the economic Index of countries since the early 90's and Haiti has been slipping ever since. There was a small but steady improvement from around 1999-2010, then the earthquake struck and set them back at least another 20 years ! The Hurricane back in 2016 made things even worse. Lately things have been peaceful (past 6 months) thank God, but you still have to be careful with these Selfish and foolish politicians that think they can improve things by overthrowing the Government.
Let's take a look at the DR for example, they were desperately poor, almost as poor as Haiti in the 1960,s but now they are 10 times better off than Haiti economically. The reason is stability, a commitment to peace and a commitment to help the underprivileged populations. The elite in Haiti are more concerned on enriching themselves and keeping the poor in their place, or just plain ignoring them, then they have the nerve to talk about pride and dignity. Despite the combined wealth of Haitians living abroad, they rather forget their roots, stick their heads in the sand and buy a big house in the suburbs with mere pittances sent to their relatives from time to time. There is no serious movement like the US Jews and their relationship to Israel. Meanwhile the shrinking middle-class in that country is apathetic, tired, discouraged and lack the initiative and discipline to improve the economic climate.
Back in 1990's and 2000's Haiti was listed at the bottom of countries in the Western Hemisphere, but above countries in Sub Saharan Africa. NOT ANY MORE ! Haiti is currently listed in the bottom 20 if not 15 countries in the world as far as economic development. This for a country that has been independent for 217 years...

It seems to me that Haiti is experimenting with the most sophisticated corruption schemes.
The main thing is to bribe the elites, to create a safe harbor for them, these schemes are old, but in Haiti they operate in the most ominous sophisticated methods

@HenryJoseph comparing different countries with differing cultures can be useless in many ways. Let's start with differences in religion, language, geography, fashion and economic systems. Why? I start with these because these components make up parts of culture. Cultural differences matter.
Hatians also survived hundreds of years of enslavement, most of its native population being wiped out, French being paid back for such freedoms, being cut off from European and American trade. Let's not forget these are African/ Black/ Hatian people being penalized for being one of the first countries to free itself from enslavement from Europeans. Government corruption plays a part too just like in many of the countries you named such as Rwanda. It's not comparing apples to apples it's comparing different apples and wanting the same taste.
Leave Hatians alone. Factor in white supremacy, slavery, politics and economic obstacles then get back to the reality of why Hatians are suffering from wealth inequality.

My church has a sister church in Haiti, that runs a school and is able to feed the children lunch. That is usually the only meal some of the children eat all day. The preacher from our sister came to the U.S. and told our congregation about the work being done and the struggle the Haitian people are going through. I was moved by his message and talked to my boss and told him I want to help. I had started buying quail cages, a brooder and an incubator to raise quail. I am trying to think how I can help our sister church and their school. Do you think it is possible to import quail eggs for human consumption. I am also trying to get in contact with Haiti officials to find out what it will take to import quail eggs and meat. My ultimate goal is to send them equipment to raise quail themselves.

Invest in mentality, that is, educational projects are needed - schools, television programs,
It seems to me that education is very important for the correct upbringing of children, the treatment of children, support centers and psychological assistance for single mothers.
This needs must be brought to the attention of the Haitian diaspora in United States of America and to support Haiti, as it was correctly noted "in the change of mentality"

I thought that Haiti didn't pay for the freedom, because when french came to claim the money it was because of the cost of the slaves and the French's life that the revolution killed and it was 20 years after the Haitian revolution, French threatened Haiti with coming with other colonialistas such as england and Portugueses, etc. And Haiti accepted to pay and not fight.

Is anyone going to Haiti and tearing down statues?
Think about what's happening in the southern states in the US.
Think about the oppression and extortion imposed on the southern states by the north.
Think about the true cause of the civil war.
Think of how the north (who enslaved Africans) tried to blame the South for slavery.

These explanations as to why Haiti are very poor and seem enabling. Countries like Vietnam and South Korea and China have suffered similar colonialism, disadvantages and vicious wars in the recent past with over a million dead and their economies are all booming. I lived in South Korea in the late 70's and the country was still largely agricultural, and look where they are now building modern jets, cell phones and computers! I don't think looking for explanations from the 19th century really explains why the economy is so dismal at the moment.

Y'all gave the wrong information about Haiti. In 1980s Haitians helped all West Indian countries. USA knows they owe us. Ask them who helped them to purchased Louisiana and other states. Liberty in the NY, supposed to be for Haiti. They stole it. France send it by boat. This never mentioned in the history book. Haiti was a rich country.

Saying that the schools in French language was a problem for Haitians because they spoke creole is like saying that the School in English in Jamaica was a problem because they spoke Patois...
It is absolutely false that only 5% of Haitians speak French
So 90% of the schools in Haiti are private...
All private schools speak proper French, yet only 5% of the Haitians speak French...
This is a very unintelligent excuse for poverty.
And you all are indirectly calling all Haitians dumb.
But when it comes to speaking English they can learn just fine right?
