    It’s incredible that it seems his level has managed to stay the same all these years, obviously his movement isn’t what it was in his 20s but I’d argue his overall strokes are better now then when he was younger, he’s spin and pace are just insane

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft Před rokem +4

      His backhand is phenomenal now (since 2012-2013 or so when he had to change up his overall game like his backhand in order to compete against Novak after the 2011-12 losses to Novak), especially his crosscourt backhand that he puts so much power and hits extremely flat if his opponent foolishly sets it up for him and thinks his backhand is his "weak" shot. His slices and volleys are so much better now than pre-2012. His forehand and movement were much better prior to 2012 but because the quality of both of those have deteriorated because of age he has so many more weapons now to keep him very competitive on hard and clay courts. He still hasn't found that special shot or technique to help him make Wimbledon finals anymore though. That poor grass record since after 2011 Wimbledon when he was a finalist shows what happened to him on grass since he was so reliant on his forehand and movement and quickness in order to make 5 Wimbledon finals, winning 2 of them. Thankfully his new tactics have helped him out so much on clay and hard courts to deal with younger players and hang in there with Djokovic.

    • @matteo964

    • @nogoodnameleft
      @nogoodnameleft Před rokem +1

      @@matteo964 Not really. His backhand was shit back then. His volleys and drop shits were mediocre back then too. He still has a great forehand but it is nowhere as good as it was in the 2000s. He didn't need to do anything on clay except hit that forehand and then run everywhere for defensive shots and gets. Did you forget how he only hit first serves to Federer's backhand in every clay court match from 2005-08? The TV would put a graphic of 1st serve placement by Rafa to Roger and it was a laughable 100% Rafa serve on ad and deuce courts to Roger's backhand. He had to fix his serve in the 2010s in order to keep winning Grand Slams also.

    • @matteo964
      @matteo964 Před rokem +1

      @@nogoodnameleft that's some stupid narrative that somehow everyone follows now. His backhand was much better back then. He used to hit some astonishing winners. Nowadays it's clearly weaker. Many end into the net or just aren't as effective anymore.

      He truly has one of the all-time greatest net game and drop shots now in his later career. Watch his old 2000s era highlights videos. He didn't ever volley or do that many drop shots back then because his groundstrokes and speed were so good. He has incorporated drop shots and volleys into his overall game and he is no one-trick pony anymore. It is ridiculous how people keep talking about how Djokovic and Federer have "upgraded" their games in order to compete after turning 30 but Rafa's new style of playing starting in 2017 after he turned 30 should be talked about more and praised just as much as the other Big 3's tactical changes.
