- The Revell 69 Pontiac GTO Build Update #1
Today I got all the mold lines cleaned out, the seats put together, the rear end assembled, and the front body clip attached. There’s a whole lot of nice detail in this kit even though it’s got a fairly low parts count. After all the prep was done I drilled for the plugs, crank case vent, heater hose, sensing line, alternator wire, and plug wires. All in all a good first day in the shop. I am hoping to get the body in paint tomorrow sometime.

I'm still amazed at the detail you put into each build. This GTO is going to be fantastic!
Thank you. I try and build on the cheap, but I really like to detail them as much as I can.
I'm actually building a 68 GTO right now after the guys at my local hobby shop told me a 69 model didn't exist. Lo and behold you've proved that wrong 😂 I'll have to do this one next!
This kit has been around for a long time, but I think it is a newer re-pop. So they may not have known it was out.
I would agree that gluing the spoiler onto the back before painting is the right choice. I also like your idea for painting the seats and will be giving that a try myself.
Thank you. I just don't want it to get bumped off, and if I glue to the paint I know it will. I'm excited to start painting the seats to see how it comes out.
I'll be watching this one to get a heads-up on possible trouble spots, for doing mine later. 😎👍
Thank you. So far, it is looking like a great kit.
@@grandpamarkshobbies kreg showed his build and good luck not breaking the steering column off better cut it forget about it😁🤩😛
Heck no!! I'm going to leave it on and see how long it takes to brake it off. LOL
Absolutely, gluing that spoiler down before paint will save you from untold misery after the paint and polish... nothing like added stress...
I did a pre glue of it and found that there would be no way to get a good coat under the spoiler, so I've opted to put it on in the end. I'll use some Mod Podge gloss that I let tack for just a few minutes before putting it on. It'll be a part that I'll have to watch, but at least I won't make runs on the trunk. LOL
Saw your thumbnail and thought of a diorama for a chop shop, I had to laugh and watch. Coming from Frank's Model.
LOL. I never thought of that. That's funny as heck.
Like I said before, a low parts count doesn't matter with your detail talents Mark. Black is the way to go with the interior. Seats-- but I would go with the black panel liner last. You know down in the cracks it's always closer the the original color - black. Dry brush the black carpet wit that German Gray. Geez who am I to tell the best... Great start and great tips!
Great video as usual... Thanks man
Man oh man you and I are on the same page!!! I painted the interior semigloss black today, then I'll dry brush it with German gray, then black panel liner in the end.
@@grandpamarkshobbies What's that they say about great minds?
You’re knocking it out of the park
It's got a long way to go, but it seems like it'll go together well.
Pontiac is one of my favorites. Thank you 😊
Mine too.
Well sounds like you have a plan ------ with your modifications it should come out pretty good ------- I was wondering ----- I'm not there to see ----- and I haven't put one of these together ------ the gap between the spoiler and trunk lid might be a little close to get a good paint coverage ------ would spraying the bottom side of the spoiler first ----- get the color in there ------ sand / scrap the contact area ------- glue it on then paint the whole car ------ won't have to worry of getting a run trying to get it covered ------- The model should look real nice when you have her all painted ------ Hope you have a Good Week ------ Rodney
Thanks for the idea. Now that I've had a day to think about it, I think I'll paint the body first and then glue the spoiler on after the paint is polished.
Well, since you asked Mark, my fears with the spoiler issue would be both before and after mounting challenges. My process would be to put a coat or 2 down 1st, then cement the spoiler and finish with the remaining top coats. Hopefully, then I'll have decent coverage under the wing, and a good coat over the piece to give it an appearance of being one piece and with a little luck - not any damage to the finish paint. BTW, I like your approach to the seats. I'm looking forward to seeing how those turn out! Thanks for the videos!
I did ask, and thank you for your idea. Well I did not attach the spoiler. I was afraid that the clear coat wouldn't look right because I wouldn't be able to polish it under there. I also changed my mind on the seats. I went semigloss black first, then I'll do German gray, then maybe black panel liner to give it that leather look. I think that will work a lot better.
@@grandpamarkshobbies However you finish those seats I'm sure they'll look great. Can hardly wait to see the video!
Thanks.
Very nice update on the progress on this one. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much.
Looks like a nice kit, I would definitely glue the spoiler on before paint.
Thank you very much. After thinking about it, I think I am going to try and pin it and paint first. I'm afraid that I may mess up the paint trying to polish it if the spoiler is in place.
Great video my friend! If anyone can paint that with the spoiler you sure can. I would do it the same way if I was building it.
Thanks, but I decided that it would just make polishing and clear coating a bugger to do.
Looks like a really nice kit I've seen a few build them . I have 4 of the older monogram toolings from the 80s.
So since I didn't want to open them I'd figured I'll buy this kit . I really like the box art on it .
Thanks for sharing. New subber here
Thank you very much, and thanks for the sub too. I didn't know the kit was re-tooled from back in the day. So far it looks good. Just a few weird things, but that's just me. LOL I like that box art too. Have a great one.
I did a video on the older ones I will go back to it a Tag you in it so you can see it
Cool. Thanks.
You're lucky you didn't get a finger print in the glue when you attached the tach to the hood. Maybe you could paint the underneath side of the spoiler before gluing it to the truck lid, that would make it easier to paint the body later. Looking forward to seeing how the seats turn out.
I didn't have my finger on the hood at all, just the tach, and I didn't have enough glue on the brush to go anywhere but around the base of the tach. I ended up painting it with the spoiler off and I'll deal with it after clear coat. LOL. I got the seats base coated yesterday, and did a quick dry brush with German Gray and I'm very happy with how it came out.
@@grandpamarkshobbies Well done, I've glued my finger print a few times. lol.
LOL. Yeah, nothing is worse than seeing that old thumb print on the dang door. LOL
tbh, I think you'll cause yourself extra work to do wet-sanding of the body and to get paint surface looking even, if you glue the rear spoiler on first.
No problem getting paint in there I'm sure, but after that??? It just might be a better looking finish to drill the holes for attachment and glue it on after painting (although I guess I don't see nubs on the spoiler to insert into holes, I just heard you mention drilling holes).
You know something, you are very right. I will take your advice and use mod podge to glue it down after I paint. You are right about not being able to polish it in the end. Good call.
I know what you mean about leather not being "just black". I once tried to patch a seat in an S10, and to match the color, it was in reality, a dark gray, despite the thought to just call it black or black interior.
Yeah, black leather is a tough one to match.
Looks like you have a plan good that you caught the lettering under it before paint
Thank you. Yeah, that would have irritated me big time.
Nice build so far 😁
Thank you very much.
I would of painted the spoiler separately from gluing it onto the truck and then now *have to paint* carefully and trying not too make heavy puddle of paint on that area!! It's for me much easier to do them separate and the just carefully glue on the spoiler after with the *MICRO KRISTAL KLEAR* glue!!
I never used that before, but I will order some.
Hey just want to say thank you for the vid"s I been building model car off n on for (60) years and u show some really slick stuff. You should Try some real cloth for seat n stuff lots of new glues out, seems No body dose that but me... Amy ways thanks for the vids keep it up. 2 thumbs-up
You just made my day. Thank you very much. I've been tossing around using ribbon for seats, but I just haven't started a build that it would look right with. But you are right, with all the new glues there is so much you can do. Not like back in the late 60's for sure. LOL
wow sounds like a great game plan so far diggin your color choices awesome vid thx 😁🤩ps still gotta get this kit maybe two😂scooter😎
Thank you very much. I think you will like this kit. It's got some good details.
When you shook that armrest on that toothpick, you could almost hear the carpet monster get excited! 😅
The wife is looking at me weird because I am laughing at the computer.
I didn't spray paint the body.but I glued mine on in the back.
That mold was so nice that I thought about going white and just clear coating it.
Love this kit, great detail for what it is. Any plans for a vinyl top?
It sure is a nice kit. You know, I was tossing around the idea of a vinyl roof, but ended up spraying it all orange.
Hey Mark. I can't wait to see the " Judge " finished. I'll bet your dark/black leather interior is going to look AMAZING!!! Did you use a different mic for this video? Your voice kinda sounded like you were talking through a box or something.
Thank you very much. I am using a new mic, in the new room there is a lot of noise and I needed to start using my mic again. I still need to figure out where to attach it so it doesn't sound like I'm talking into a toilet. LOL
@@grandpamarkshobbies Don't get me wrong. You're still clear and understandable. It just kinda sounds like you have the mic on one end of like a cereal box and you're talking into the other end. LOL
I think that is the noise canceling part of it. I have a new camera with a mic in it, but I need to finish the shop first so I can hook up my computer and stream to it.
I built the same model.but mine has tan interior.and it's a monogram model kit the judge.kit 2294.
I'm totally sure that is the same kit as this just re boxed and re popped.
Gonna be cool! How are you liking the new shop?
Thank you very much. I LOVE my new shop so far. I have some tweaking to do to get it perfect, but it's not that far off right now. LOL
@@grandpamarkshobbies I love the tweaking!
You and me both. It'll never be done, but I'm looking forward to having a place for the Texaco station. I'm even going to have a green screen behind it. So I can do some fun background stuff.
@@grandpamarkshobbies cool!
Love it!! I was wondering about the color of the Pontiac engine, Blue? I thought it was red. I took notice and a 1st time i seen, the steering unit, is it molded to the mold? Im sure i will see ya in the Shop!
Thank you very much. Pontiac use to use a metallic ice blue color for the engines. I always liked that color. The steering box is molded to the frame, and the steering column is molded to the firewall. Only problem is it isn't quite long enough, so I'm going to have to add a bit to it.
@@grandpamarkshobbies yes TESTORS MODEL MASTER actually has the authentic colour *"Pontiac Engine Blue Metallic"* that I uses for all my Pontiac engines!! Greetings to you Grandpa and keep up with all your great works in this our beautiful hobby, coming from all the way from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 in the Caribbean!!😀
I use to use Model Master all the time, but about 7 years ago I switched over to Tamiya because I don't have any way to vent my airbrush, so I've just slowly switched over to them. I do miss some of the great colors MM has, but it works for me. I think you are the first person to comment from the Caribbean. Very cool. Thanks for following along.
Looks like a awesome start... Me I would drill/pin the spoiler. Just have a feeling... 🤔
LLAP 🖖
Yeah, you are right. I think I will do it that way and paint everything first.
@@grandpamarkshobbies I do like your idea and it has its own marriotts, not sure the coverage would get under it real well. I did read a comment where it was suggested to paint that area and bottom of the fin and install it and then give it a full paint job. There again not cutting out a step as you intended to do and reduce the glue issue... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
LLAP 🖖
Well, I just got out of the spray booth, and I'm glad I didn't glue that spoiler on first. Once I got to looking at how I was going to have to angle the airbrush to get under it I knew it would just go very bad. LOL
@@grandpamarkshobbies Man I hate it when Bruce has that feeling! 🤣
Thanks the paint gods... Lol Glad you figured it out. Did you fit the pins and holes before painting?
LLAP 🖖
Yeah, I'm really happy that I didn't mess this up. The spoiler is so thin that I couldn't drill it to pin, so I'll just use mod podge and let it tack up a minute before I try and attach it.
I try to glue the spoilers on when I can. You won't know if it's a good idea til it works or it doesn't.
I was looking at the way I'd have to spray it and decided it would just make a mess, so I left it off and sprayed the body. So I'll end up using gloss mod podge to hold it in place. It will work fine.
@@grandpamarkshobbies Can you pin it through, with styrene rod and hopefully get a no mess attachment and a good bond?
I will use the mod podge by it self, but let it sit for a few minutes so it tacks up before I put it on.
😎👍
Thank you.
to bad we live so far apart.being that I live in geauga county.
That is cool Just around the block.
Ah, come on. You're going tooo Fast. 😮 I haven't even gotten the Cellophane Off mine. 🤣🤣🤣🐾👍✔️ NOT Fair 😘 Kiss the Dogs 😁👍✔️
LOL. Sitting with the dogs on either side of me right now. LOL. I think you will like this one. It's a nice kit.
