The Citadelle Henry I

- The Citadelle Laferrière located in northern Haiti, approximately 17 miles (27 km) south of the city of Cap-Haïtien and five miles (8 km) from the town of Milot. It is the largest fortress in the Americas and was designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a World Heritage Site in 1982-along with the nearby Sans-Souci Palace. The Citadel was built by Henri Christophe, after Haiti gained independence from France at the beginning of the 19th century. The massive stone structure was built by up to 20,000 workers between 1805 and 1820 as part of a system of fortifications designed to keep the newly-independent nation of Haiti safe from French incursions. Built several miles inland, and atop the 3,000 ft (910 m) Bonnet a L’Eveque mountain, to deter attacks and to provide a lookout into the nearby valleys. Cap-Haïtien and the adjoining Atlantic Ocean are visible from the roof of the fortress. Anecdotally, it is possible to sight the eastern coast of Cuba, some 90 miles (140 km) to the west, on clear days. The Haitians outfitted the fortress with 365 cannon of varying size. Enormous stockpiles of cannonballs still sit in pyramidal stacks at the base of the fortress walls. Since its construction, the fortress has withstood numerous earthquakes, though a French attack never came.

This is breathtaking! Thank you Mr. Estime for recording and sharing this.
Thank you !
The history behind this castle is great and Powerful on how it was built up on the mountains, makes me say Waw!!!
WHAT A WONDERFUL WORK AND AMAZING DISPLAY!! MERCI ENCORE
The citadel is very impressive. Sadly, Henri had no way of knowing that France's continued subjugation of Haiti would not come through the use of an invading army, but through foreign debt.
@Juan...Yes. As the late movie star, Liz Taylor, stated while alive, "There's no deodorant like money." Besides, with France so far away, debt made for a better strategy.
Jean Jacques Dessalines would have put up with that weak garbage & that's why they took him out..
May his soul lives on Bahasham Ha'Mashiach Yashaya
I think Henri , only think in Himself. The Fortress is for protect him, not for protect Haiti.

If you want defend a country you defend the ports, cities, borders, main roads....
this fortress is far of all them. Only is near the palace.... and the road to the fortress is not for defend anymore is for you can´t arrive the fortress
That´s your lies.
I am proud to be from the gut of Haitian people.
I visited this place in the late 80s, while on a volunteer work project to Haiti. Took many pictures back then. Nice to compare my pictures to this video. Good job !!
@wendy louis Lay off the ganja sweetie - you not be making any sense
@wendy louis Where did I say that I had anything to do with building this????? I visited it in the 80s and took some pictures, and said that whoever did the video, did a good job of it. As I'll say again, lay off the ganja sweetie - it's messing with your common sense.
this is the best most important historical monument of Haiti.
I would go further and say in the Caribbean.
@@haroldestime Agree. There is no other caribbean monument (along with Sans Souci palace) as majestic like this one. So often overlooked or unknown by many.
@@haroldestime THE WORLD !!!! RESPECT FOR HAITI
For blacks, I would say the citadel in the modern world, and the great pyramids in the ancient world!
The emperors palace.
It always been my dream to visit Citadelle.

Bravo! Claude Bélizaire
Thanks Claude, I'm going back this summer to do more filming.

The most important historical country in the Americas is Ayiti. Peyi istorik ki pi enpòtan nan Amerik la se Ayiti.
What did you write? "Historical country that is more important than the US. Haiti that is." Holy shiat. I can read Haitian Creole and I read that fast too. I assure you, I'm not Haitian but I'm fluent in French. In the same way I can oddly naturally read Portuguese, Spanish and Italian and all Germanic languages (because I'm also fluent in English).
@@TemplarX2
AYITI is historically more important than the US because:
1. It was the first State that embodies liberty and human rights in the Americas in 1804, while the US was too busy trading humans up to the late 1860s.
2. It is the first State to abolish the enslavement trade.
3. It is the State that helped many of the South American Countries in their
fight for liberty
4 AND even Mexico
Lastly, the USA is not the Americas, but one country within the Continent of America

The USA needs to clarify the matter as all people in the countries within the continent of America, north, south, west, east, are Americans

Hi Wilfred Amisial hope all is well with you and family. This is Harold Estime and I'm producing a documentary on the Citadel and Christophe and I really like your comment is it possible to get your email to send you more info about the documentary, my email is: abestime@gmail.com
hope to hear from you soon and thanks you for your comment !
Unfortunately the Citadelle was never intended to protect from the French army but instead to protect Henry from his fellow comrades in case of a power struggle which eventually came soon as the French departed. This structure was to be his last refuge if his northern kingdom was to be overwhelmed by the southerners
Haiti the father and mother of freedom I salute and honor thee and u shall rise again Ase

Tears down on my cheek
I have always had a horror of this country, mainly because the images I have always seen have always been of very impoverished people, stories of gangs & murder & a general digusting level of human behavior - no wonder so many people are desperate to get out of there. Nobody ever talks of the beauty of the place, the amazing possibilities this gorgeous landscape could have for the people given half a chance at sorting out the problems of food insecurity & other issues the ordinary people have to struggle with. I know Barbados pretty well & this place is huge compared to that little island, yet look at the difference in development & attitudes between the 2 places - no comparison ! Time for something very positive to happen for this place, it seemed to be possible at one time but I feel very sorry for those trying hard to make a decent life there with so many problems of crime & poverty right now. The world owes this beautiful country much help !!!
I’m Haitian. We don’t need sympathy. We need to be left alone. But foreign governments keep messing with us. Just like the do the Black Americans
👑 henry and jean jacques should have made their capital
Alejo Carpentier book brought me here...
I could never forget this place after going on a steep hill for hours I was dead for the next few months would not go back without transportation but other than that it was beautiful
So the question remains how did they build this if you struggle just to walk
wow what is this place! !
