I had around 8 subscribers at the time of this video, and if I'd known it would one day get a million views I never would have made this. Therefore, my arguments aren't the most thought out and the audio sounds like it was recorded in a bin. Keep that in mind while you watch it!
Also since making this, I've come to appreciate the original comics way more, so it's completely unfair to say its characters are one-dimensional. I think I was referring to Stan's style of dialogue, but just because it's dated doesn't mean it's bad. Stan's original run remains one of the best in comic history, and his characters were very complex. I still agree with most of what I said in this video but I wouldn't do it at the expense of the old comics.

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone who recommends this run as an introduction into the Spider-Man comics. Sure, you get some weird details that are exclusive quirks of the ultimate universe, but it all works to create a cohesive narrative that works from start to (almost) finish. I read it years ago and it didn’t really do it for me at first, but after stumbling upon Prodigy’s motion comic series of it and getting to experience it at a better pace, I’ve gained a new appreciation for it.

Or rather, he was resurrected not long after his funeral in some abandoned laboratory in Los Angeles, hitchhiking across the country to make it back home. Oh and Green Goblin was also alive this whole time as well, revealing that the OZ formula is some kind of immortality formula that will keep bringing them back to life no matter how many times they are killed. Which also should mean Harry Osborne, Mary Jane, and Gwen Stacy should also be immortal as they too were exposed to OZ, but that never comes up.
I think Bendis was gearing up for some kind of storyline involving Peter and his resurrection, that maybe it wasn't the OZ formula that brought him back. Hulk being an insane r*pist, Xavier falling in love with a sixteen year old, the Blob being a cannibal, it's all edgelord trash. I feel out of the live action Spider-Man actors, the closest to this version of the character is Andrew Garfield. People want to think Peter Parker is upbeat and positive 90% of the time, but he's got a lot on his plate and always had a bit of angst in his character. Ultimate Spider-Man, to me, emphasis this to show how difficult being a teenage superhero really would be and I love that. Yeah, he's hit heated at times, but wouldn't you be at that age and had to deal with everything he does? Andrew Garfield, to me, feels like he took a lot of inspiration from this run to try be relatable to every kid and teen who's ever felt overwhelmed and like they can't handle it anymore. Despite feeling that way too, he always gets back and and continue on because it's his responsibility

Spectacular Gwen's role in the story is very similar to Ultimate MJ's. (Peter's best friend in high school, with him when he gets bitten by spider, eventual love interest, love triangle with Harry)
It includes Kenny "Kong" McFarlane, a character created specifically for Ultimate Spider-Man
Spectacular Peter goes to high school with MJ, Harry, and Gwen like in the Ultimate Universe. In the Marvel Universe, he never ment any of them until college.

I still think it was a massive disservice to Miles by reconning him into the 616 universe the way they had. It took away his moment, his journey. It put him in a universe that didn't need him. He's been moved around so much that he's truly lost his purpose and his goals become muddied. For miles to be the great character he was, peter had to die. Marvel is so cavalier about changing the status quo that characters rarely ever stay dead. Characters rarely if ever grow and get to be as great as they were. Even the greatest springs become stagnant if not allowed to dry up. Even the greatest heroes can become nothing more than filler when they can't ever grow. They can't grow if they're always living in the shadow of their legacy. One more day is a great example. In the time where they needed a young spiderman, they never gave Peter his ultimate sacrifice; his true ending. So they put the character into the situation of stagnation and regression. Never given the ability to grow. That's what the ultimate comic did right. The knew how to grow a character and they knew when to sunset them. Give them that moment to allow a new dawn. This is why the ultimate spider man is truly great. Characters grew and some died. They moved onto new stories and new characters. They gave legacy characters moments without needing to take away from the new and ruining what was great. It's a shame that it had to end, because it really was the best.

Had lots of love-hate relationship with the Ultimate universe, but the only exception was the Ultimate Spider-Man run. Got a more believable Peter as a kid, love Mary Jane and Gwen’s style to being my headcanon clothing for them, Peter and Kitty’s relationship was actually so adorable, it always stand out for me, Jessica Drew being a clone of Spider-Man, Debatably my favorite Aunt May (going back and forth with the PS Aunt May), Spider-Man literally taking a bullet for Captain America, Jameson witnessing and admitting Spider-Man is a hero, and the aftermath of Peter’s death. And then when I thought It was good enough for me to put down the Ultimate Spider-Man run, I read Miles Morales’ run as the next Spider-Man at a Barnes and Nobles and I immediately love his character, his lore, that crossover when he met 616 Spider-Man for the first time and ended up my definitive favorite Ultimate character. I still regret it took years for me to know the character rather than hearing controversy. Head scratching Ultimate Peter came back, but with Miles going to the main marvel universe and main marvel universe Miles went to the Ultimate universe, I think it balanced it out.

He was never stated to be dead during Ultimatum, his status was MIA. (Even in the comic, there was a list of the deceased heroes). And i mean if the green goblin goblin survived being shot in head like it was stated at 14:00, then so could Spidey after "dying" from blood lost (Given that they both recieve their powers thanks to the OZ formula).

Amazing video, Alex! I completely agree with everything you said, especially the part where they should adapt the comic into an animated series. I mean... someone could argue they already did with the cartoon "Ultimate Spider-Man", but everyone should know, that was nothing like the real Ultimate Spider-Man. The closest we've gotten to an adaption of the Ultimate comics Spider-Man was the amazing videogame that was released back on PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PC, GBA and DS. That game still remains my favourite Spider-Man game. Even though I believe it's not the best Spider-Man game. That'd go to Web of Shadows, It's still my favourite.

Bendis did great on his writing...and having my fave post Todd/Erik artist drawing it (Bagley) was a no brainer. Even their take on the clone saga was better. I honestly was pissed when USM died.....he has barely scratch the surface and felt MM was just a big token...I'm a fan of ORIGINAL characters, not all heroes should be a legacy character, unless it works for their story (Phantom, Black Panther) MM did grow on me....and I enjoyed his Ultimate era better. The movie ITSV was phenomenal. Shoutouts to Donald Glover.

Personally I like spiderman when he's not attached to anything bigger than "your friendly neighborhood spiderman"
My favorite series of spiderman was the spectacular spiderman animated series. There was no other heros, no shield agency, no human extinction level threat. It was a simple story of a high school kid with super powers. Fighting crime at night and dealing with teen drama during the day.
I never enjoyed when the comics or other TV series kept making his secret identity revealed to his friends or family or even the world. There's just something about his ability to keep his secret identity a secret that gives the story a lot more spice and thrill.
Don't get me wrong. I love ultimate spiderman and the huge battles he faces with the other marvel heros. But I always felt like the spectacular spiderman was more relatable in the sense he seemed so much like a normal kid which in turn made the show better since he also had to carry the responsibility of being a hero.

All punisher wanted was to stop Cap.

In the show, Jameson starts off just printing whatever spiderman pictures Peter gives him, but after his son's dangerous life threatening space landing back home, he notices nobody cared about it, he saw his son an astronaut as a real hero but the media nowadays only painted spiderman as a hero, so Jameson made it his mission to taint the spidey's reputation by making fake and misleading stories painting Spidey as a menace
Flash also gets a character arc that turns him good and during the symbiote arc, Flash is the only one Peter listens to, because he's Flash, the last guy you'd expect to get help from

While I do agree that ultimate is alot more realistic, I think it does alot of stuff that are weird and good or weird and bad. For example, having Peter be more prone to anger is realistic but its weird for the character. And alot of things happen in very distasteful ways like gwen and Peter viewing each other as siblings yet they dated each other, Eddie having a personal connection with Peter works on paper, but not in execution, and I think they destroyed black cats character. The one good character change i personally enjoy is doc ock as its alot better than 616. But even with all of this, I still love ultimate. Maybe its just because of my bias with the game lol

The Death of Spider-Man, led to an amazing character arc for Ultimate Cap, whom I didn't even like initially. Probably one of my favorite Cap stories, "United We Stand", which ultimately led to Cap becoming the President of USA.🙌🏿🙌🏿

The Ultimates had cool arcs but the characters themselves with probably except Nick Fury and Thor are written like satires of the Avengers. They feel like The Boys in PG13. Cap is super conservative, Tony is always drunk, Hulk eats people and is super horny, Pym and Janet have a toxic relationship.

Just getting started on the ultimate Spider-Man series myself and I personally love it! Found the older comics a wee bit cheesy myself, still fun however. Like the Reddit posts I've loved the movies since I was small but never actually sat and read the comics! Love your voiceover work too!

You the loss of Ultimate Spider-Man really did hurt me when I read it. I’ve never been as attached to a version of Spider-Mans surrounding world as much as I was in this story. It’s probably easily my favorite Spider-Man world just because it feels the most real to me. So many good characters. So much was lost though with the death of Peter… We no longer had a constant window into that world. It was replaced by Miles… I think that’s why I’ve always had a kinda dislike for miles morales. He meant the end to one of my favorite incarnations of the character. That’s why honestly after Peters death I couldn’t put myself through Miles books.. I just couldn’t. It hurt.. so instead I went through them to try to see if Peter ever came back but even when he did nothing much came from it. Sure the reason he’s alive is stupid but I didn’t care much I just wanted that world back. It honestly saddens me that I will never get it back. Miles Morales has become a great character but I hate the original version because he meant the loss of one of my favorite versions of Spider-Man.

Miles is still shiet in the comics, he has been drastically improved in the Spiderverse and the ps4 game though.

    • @shizachan8421
      @shizachan8421 Před 2 lety +9

I also generally feel like the original version of Miles Morales kind of has a few issues, mostly that there isn't enough to seperate him from Peter Parker and that he seems to be kinda...to mild. Into the Spiderverse made some genius changes to Miles Morales which I hope will slowly creep into comics, which made him much more of a person of his own. Like, him being really into arts, which differenciates him greatly as a person from Peter. The Uncle Aaron changes are just objectively better. Like, in the original comic, Aaron was just such a mean psychopath and there wasn't really anything for Miles character to gain, outside of being abused and traumatized. Aaron deeply caring about Miles and being killed because of it on the other hand offers a great uncle Ben-esque moment, while the context is really different.
Though I think the best change made to Miles is, to give him a whole different origin theme, instead of learning that with great power comes great responsibility, which Miles just doesn't needs to learn because he is already a kid living in a world where Spider-Man is a role model that inspires, its him learning to do that leap of faith. The leap of faith was fully unique to Miles and a great arc to jumpstart him into being his own Spiderman.
I think one big problem Bendis has with specifically writing super heroes is really him holding back and being too focussed to make the character a role model and inspirational, which contradicts with his core strength of writing messy and realistic characters. I believe he wants to sincerely wants to write characters like Miles and Riri and creat more black legacy character, him having a black daughter, and that he has the best intentions, I just feel like he falls into the trap of being too sensitive about his black leads.

@@shizachan8421 You make really great points! His uncle in the comics is so uninteresting and just stupid how evil he is. The additions in recent times to his character have definitely enhanced him as a character immensely. Although I still have a bit of a caution when it comes to his character. He’ll just never replace Peter to me which makes me hate when people think Peter needs to die to add him. I can definitely warm up to the character though when he’s his own character separate from Peter. I may prefer him to have his own name but whatever. As long as Peter stays around as well 😂
