The bombing campaigns forced the North Vietnamese to bargain, and a cease-fire was created, similar to that in Korea. However, the Democrat party could never forgive Nixon for winning a war that they started. So after troops were moved out, Congress cut off funds for South Vietnam and left them defenseless. North Vietnam rolled right into South Vietnam and took it over. But America had "peace" and that's what mattered.
The war wasn't lost. Politicians wrestled defeat from the jaws of victory.

There are two main purposes to rules of engagement from a purely practical standpoint.
    1. Don't look bad. That could be don't look like the bad guys or don't look incompetent. Thus the rule about not firing until you're sure it's an enemy because the war was unpopular and the politicians were scared of a friendly fire incident.
    2. Don't directly provoke other powers and potentially get them (more) involved, this the paranoia about killing a Chinese or Russian advisor.
That said, putting specific rules like that in place from people who don't understand the ground situation or warfare in general is idiotic. The smart thing to do is have the politicians tell the ground troops the *goals*, and let them find better ways to accomplish them, because I guarantee you the combined common sense of experiences soldiers vastly outweighs that of the entire political body.

The military did not lose the war, the politicians did. Too many politicians survived after the war. Had they not, politicians would consider military lives more when making decisions they will never have to live by.

Interesting fact: the CGI and explanation of the Vector Roll were from a show called "DogFights" that used to be on the Military Channel. They also did an episode on Operation Bolo that included interviews with pilots that took part and Military advisors/experts. The whole episode is over 40 minutes long, but availaable on CZcams and I highly recommend the series.

one thing to remember with the politicians here is that this was at the height of the cold war so everyone had enough nukes to destroy the earth pointed at each other and we didn't know at the time if one dead 'advisor' would be the match that sparked the explosion that ended humanity forever. You're too young to remember what that felt like. I am not. the stakes were unimaginable to anyone born after the early 80s. The reason they were so adamant about avoiding collateral casualties is that a mistake could mean that the earth glows at night and the only living things left are bacteria and roaches.

Now you see why we "lost" Vietnam, The "loss" isn't counted because (from how I understand it) what was going on with the US in Vietnam was never "technically" declared a "War"... it was a "conflict". But that was before my time so idkfs.

There's a difference between rules of engagement and war crimes. War crimes are for things that basically everyone came together and "agreed" to abide by. Our more accuratly, a few countries decided on these rules and told everyone else to follow them or else. Rules of engagement are set by a government to keep things "fair" in a war that would otherwise be unfair. That's why every American war since World War 2 has ended up taking way longer than they should have. Some "unintended" consequences of extending a war include rich people making lots of money and lives lost. Coincidentally, the politicians setting these rules of engagement tend to end up doing pretty well for themselves following war times as well.

33:57 Olds was the elite of the elite. And teamed with a man like Chappy, look out. And that scene WAS the first Cars movie. That would be a geeat movie. The History Channel did a series for a couple seasons about planes and certain battles, including this one. They made all these animations, some of which are in your video, so as to be like actual events. Pretty good stuff. It actually puts you in the fight.

The thing for the rules of engagement, is they are not rules of war as a whole. Things like "don't mistreat POWs" or "don't target medics" are rules of war, where a vast majority of countries have agreed that this should be something nobody does. Rules of engagement are the US government saying "our forces can only do things within these parameters, regardless of whether your side abides by those rules". this is politicians interfering with things that they have no idea what they're talking about, and nobody who has actual working knowledge of the military (or whatever else the topic may be at a given time) is allowed to help make the decisions they have specialized knowledge of.

This also goes to show everyone just how blatantly stupid US politicians actually are. It also shows the world that while the US military is second to none in training, equipment, and willingness to fight, the military is almost always crippled by by incompetent politicians. This is also in part why the US military is having such a hard time getting recruits and keeping the personal they already have. I mean how many people would reconsider joining the military if they truly understood that the politicians will constantly interfere with military decisions and get soldiers killed simply for political decisions. The fact that Russian and Chinese trainers and observes were there changes nothing they were still military targets. Only a fool would believe the Chinese or Russians would start a war over a few dead observes. They would simply deny they were ever there in the first place.
