    As a vein nurse, I would also recommend wearing compression garments, at least a knee-high sock while flying. Also, Jacuzzis and/or hot tubs are not the best for people that have varicose veins. They cause your veins to dilate, and overtime they can cause additional damage.
    If patients have any pain in their legs, I always recommend an ultrasound to rule out any reflux of the great saphenous vein or short saphenous vein before starting treatment. If you start injecting veins in the path of those vessels, you may sometimes make the area worse.

    I used to have schlerotherapy, by a dermatologist, on my legs every few years and pay out of pocket. Then I noticed bigger, lumpy veins and someone recommended a vein specialist. She told me that if you don't treat the lumpy varicose veins which feed the spider veins, the spider veins will keep coming back. So my saphenous veins (?) in my legs were ablated. A simple procedure, not very painful except for the numbing injections. Then wore compression stockings for a week. My body formed dark brown lines where the veins had been and they didn't fade until months later. Definitely worth doing. Bonus: Medicare paid for it because it isn't considered cosmetic, unlike spider veins! So no excuses, get it done!

      Seeing your comment now after posting above - yes, I did the same! Still have a few more txs, but my legs already look so much better after the RFA! And yes you're right, if you keep treating the superficial veins and not the source (the Saphenous veins that have faulty valves) the veins will just keep coming back!

    I had vein injections back in the late 80’s . The veins disappeared immediately but returned a few weeks later . It was then the Dr. told me it may require multiple sessions, too expensive for me at that time so I choose not to. It also left a permanent bruise on one injection site. If there have been improvements made in the treatments since then, I may consider trying again. It’s been years since I’ve shown my calves. Would like to wear a sundress once in a while on those hot summer days😊

      Thanks for doing this video now. I always think about it when the weather is warm and you’re wearing clothes that show the leg more. But then I think about compression stocking in our southeast Louisiana heat and humidity. No way. January would work though.

    FYI this doesn't work for everyone. I had it done and had blood clots as a result throughout both of my legs. It is awesome when it works! Unfortunately, I wasn't a good candidate after all.

  • @janetsmith523

    Please, please, please do your research before having schlerotherapy done especially if for solely cosmetic purposes. I work in healthcare and I have seen a lot of older patients who had had schlerotherapy in the past which I believe has been at least a contributory factor in their chronic lower extremity edema. This then can lead to further complications, like cellulitis and wounds. I'm sure the foam schlerotherapy is quite different from the old vein stripping approach, but the result is the same - the veins are destroyed.

    • @missyperry9510
      @missyperry9510 Před 7 měsíci +1

      The whole purpose of sclerotherapy IS to destroy the vein because it is not working sufficiently to pump blood.
      Once the old vein is destroyed the blood finds alternate veins to use.
      I've had sclerotherapy done on my legs for the past 36 years off and on to eliminate varicose and spider veins and it has never caused edema in my ankles or legs.
      My late father on the other hand had terrible bulging veins and spider veins in his legs and was never treated with sclerotherapy, he had horrible edema as a result of no treatment.

    • @janetsmith523
      @janetsmith523 Před 6 měsíci

      @@missyperry9510 Yes, I understand that is the intended "therapeutic" outcome. I'm glad you had successful treatment. I'm just saying I have frequently seen unilateral symptoms, on the side where an intervention was done, without other readily identifiable possible causes. Personally, I would analyze the risks and benefits if this was recommended to me for incompetent vein(s). I would not choose to do it for cosmetic purposes, but that's just me.

    • @missyperry9510
      @missyperry9510 Před 6 měsíci

      @@janetsmith523 Perhaps the older folks with the edema problems are too sedentary? With all the treatments I've had with multiple providers in 2 different states, they all instructed me to take long brisk walks for circulation. Walking has always helped my legs. Or if the older folks are not having the major saphenous veins ablated and dissolved first, then treating just the cosmetic spider veins might lead to edema as well.
      Unfortunately my father was sedentary and the road map of veins in his legs caused edema.
      My veins are hereditary from my father and without sclerotherapy and radio frequency ablation for my saphenous large veins, and then sclerotherapy for the spider veins, my legs would look and feel horrible at my current age of 66. Vein treatment for me was life changing.

    Before ever doing a procedure with any type of chemical going into your body, always ask the medical personnel doing the procedure to show you the box with the label for the ingredients and the side effects. Chemicals in your body are like a run away train, once inserted and who knows what type of damage it does along the way for its intended purpose. I was about to this and it does say it can cause a heart attack, even months later after injecting the foam. Honestly, I care too much about my health to risk it. Why bother eating healthy and then put FOAM in your body?

    I just started my Tx for mostly Reticular/Spider Veins, not Varicose Veins. I had a lot of them! Kinda blue/purple and slightly raised. I am going to Jasmine Koo, MD in San Diego. She is a triple board certified Vein Specialist and rare to see a Physician with 276 5* Google reviews! She does 1000 txs/yr. (Google Jasmine Koo MD San Diego). She started with RFA (Radiofrequency Abblation) of my (4) Saphenous Veins. I am 64 and this tx was long overdue. Ultrasound determined that I have Moderate Veinous Insufficiency and the SVs needed to be closed before they could do any tx to my Reticular/Spider veins, again a lot of them! Now on to Varithena and Sclerotherapy. But it will be a long road - 7 - 9 months ;-/ I live in Reno, NV and have a house in SD, so many trips back and forth. And Insurance is covering it, yay! (Anthem PPO - not on Medicare yet). And yes, as someone said below - ya gotta be okay with those ugly Compression Stockings! I am pretty much wearing them 24/7 except for when I shower or when apply Dermend (great product!). I hope by Summer I might be able to wear shorts again! (haven't worn shorts in 20+ years!)
