    not sure if she says this later in the video, but if you can’t find fabric paint, or just have a lot of acrylics (i know i do :P), get a bottle of GAC 900. it’s a paint medium that gives acrylics the same qualities as fabric paints. I’ve never had an issue with paint stiffness or washing off in the washing machine when i use it. 10/10 would recommend!

    • @zigentala
      @zigentala  Před 3 lety +24

      Hey! I've never used medium before, and I can see how it would be better if you already have an established acrylic paint collection. I think someone has mentioned here that GAC 900 is one of the better ones to use!

    I am a wall mural artist. I have painted on every surface imaginable. White and black is a must as you can darken or lighten your primary colors for highlights or shadowing. FYI: You can use acrylic paints mixed with a fabric medium. ALL fabric paints are made with acrylic paint! You can even use chalk paint and then use a wax so it isn’t stiff. My first jacket (Carhart) I ever did was back in 93, my son was into all the characters in nightmare before Christmas, I drew them all in pencil, outlined them in a black sharpie pen. Painted with paint pens, and other paints I had around.
    The sharpie did fade so I went back over it with diluted down black exterior paint from my window shutters! He still has the jacket and people always ask him were he got it and he is so proud to brag that his mom made it for him.
    I am in the middle of doing Spider-Man for one grandson and another Nightmare Before Christmas for my other grandson. Trying to get my handmade stuff done before Christmas!

    Thank you for this video :) I would also highly suggest prewashing any items you wish to paint. Demin is made of cotton which often shrinks a little in the wash, if you paint on your jacket and then wash it, that shrinking can pull the fabric fibers away from the paint and weaken the paints adhesion to the fabric. Prewashing also improve the paints adhesion by removing any dirt or oils that might be on the jacket's surface. We want the paint to stick to the fabric not to the grime that might be on top of the fabric.
    I also know you can buy fabric medium to mix into regular acrylic paints. This give acrylic that flexibility of fabric paints once dry. However, one down side is that they can thin your paints down so that sometime you have to do more layers than you would if you just used fabric paints, but it's a good option if you already have a lot of acrylic paint and don't wanna spend a ton of money to buy a bunch of fabric paints. I recommend Golden GAC 900 or Liquitex Professional Fabric Medium.

    Can you go into more detail about heat-treating the paint? Is it necessary? Is there a perfect temperature to use? Thanks for all your tips.

    • @tinaknutsen
      @tinaknutsen Před 10 dny +2

      Heat treating just cures the paint and allows it to bind to the fabric so it doesn’t wash away easily. It sets the dyes in the paint so they don’t fade.
      Another method if you don’t want to iron is;
      You can place in 300 degree oven for 30 minutes.
      That way you don’t worry if the paint will come off on the iron.
      I wouldn’t recommend putting delicate fabrics or dry clean only fabrics in the oven.
      Anything you wash and dry on regular cycle works.
      Hope that answers your question about heat treating.

      Lil Daddy Roth Flakes work…very pigmented. High glitter! It comes in very small jars and a little goes a long way.
      My husband worked in auto paint and detailing so I experimented with it on fabric. It comes in so many colors. Apply it over wet paint and let it set 24 hours. Then put a clear wax over it and let that set for 3 days for a full cure …it will dry completely clear and will not flake off. I learned this through experimenting. I also like the chameleon paint ( for cars) that’s were you look at one angle it’s blue, another angle purple…green. But it’s crazy expensive it was $425 last I heard for 6 ounces. I did a pair of shoes …turned out amazing. My husband just retired so no more new free stuff😢
      Got plenty of sand paper, air brushes, pin striping tape, but I am really going to miss the other supplies.

    Hi, thankyou for your helpful tips. I just painted my first piece, a denim jacket. I bought Pebeo setacolor, the one that you mention.
    It made the jacket a little stiff, more than I would have liked. I don't know what I did wrong, I didn't put a lot of layers.
    Applying the first layer with white made it stiff already. I needed for lighter colors over it.
    It's funny because when I painted black hair and a cat, black didn't turn the those parts stiff.
    All my paints al the same, pebeo.
    The only thing that I have heard that I did different was washing and adding fabric softener on washer when I washed it.
    I heard someone suggested not to add fabric softener when washing the clothes prior to painting on them.
    What can you suggest me? It is still flexible but stiff 🙄😒
    Thank you, I look forward to learn more from your techniques 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    • @zigentala
      @zigentala  Před 3 lety +2

      I think I understand your problem, as there can be some opacity issues and inconsistencies with paint texture. I have a particular paint, orange, that is super thick and is so hard when it dries that it cracks, while other colours like black or raspberry is silky smooth.
      I’ve never washed with softener so that might be another factor, but I don’t have any knowledge to help you there ! I’ve never had a problem with black, so yeah it might just be an opacity issue. I live in Australia so setacolor gets imported and I’ve had some paints that have come that are very blobby and I’ve just put it down to the paints being old as they may have been in storage at warehouses for longer.

      Some textile paints or acrylic paints mixed with textile medium need to be heat set to make the design permanent and washable, you put the denim inside out and then iron it for 7 minutes with no water in the iron and do not steam it. Some paints do not require this but there’s no harm in doing it anyway. Then the design fuses with the fibres and will not wash off.

      Use acrylic paints (apple barrel, folk art) and mix with fabric medium Gac 900 or similar product found at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby in the paint aisle.
      I just eye it when mixing…a dollop of acrylic paint and a 1/2 dollop of medium (each color) you’ll also want to heat treat after 24 hours to ensure the paint binds and the colors don’t fade. You can do with iron or in stove 300 degrees/30 minutes. Middle rack, parchment lined cookie sheet.

    Thank you for the tips. Do you recommend acrylic paint for just starting out? Instead of investing so much money on fabric paint?
    Also is there a particular brush or brushes needed?

    Golden Acrylics make a 'Fabric Medium' It's one of their GAC range - *GAC900* possibly?
    Anyhoo, you can add it to their acrylic paint to make it suitable for painting on fabric. If you already have their high-flow acrylic, it's already very runny (yet still highly pigmented) which helps a little.
    Just popping this here in case anyone has a load of acrylic paint already, and doesn't want to invest in a whole new set of paints... 🤍
    The swatch tip is a great idea, thanks so much! 🤍

      The more cotton percentage, the better. Some denims are very elastic, and that can crack up your artwork if the area is stretched.
