    I'm a minimalist Aki who is a school teacher living in a small village in Japan.
    These days, I started an experiment to be healthier.
    I decided to try the pescatarian diet for 30 days
    Can I really live without eating meat in Japan where eating meat regularly is a normal thing?
    What will happen to my body after 30 days?
    Rules
    Continue for 30 days
    Don’t eat any meat such as pork, chicken or beef
    Try not to eat products from animals, such as milk, cheese, eggs(Pescatarian can actually eat these foods but I tried not to eat them)

    the feeling “less heavy” thing is so true. I’ve been a pescetarian for years and I feel so much more healthier & energetic. I mostly eat vegetarian food but make sure to have 2 servings of safe healthy sustainable seafood every week😊
    And yes I also poop more than I used and spend a lot more on groceries 😅

      ​@cinnamonshi2277 When we buy in bulk it is the opposite of minimalism. One spends more money, then has to find storage, and more plastic to wrap more product is hard on Mother Earth. Peace, my friend...

    Thanks for this vid! I did this diet too for 40 days during Catholic Lent. My blood pressure dropped to a much healthier level and, like you, I didn't have any noticeable changes body mass, fat, or muscle. I ate a bunch of rice. I made a ton of potato based soups (leek or broccoli). I ate a ton of spinach too. My favorite meal was a toss up between 1. pasta with shrimp, peas, zucchini, diced tomato, garlic, fresh basil, white wine, and tomato sauce, Or 2. Vegetable Curry with potato, celery, carrot, shallot, and zucchini. I did include eggs, cheese, and cream (full fat versions) sparingly. I also looked up some Korean breakfasts options and there is a ton of options their too. My most similar result: price. I had a grilled salmon fillet every Friday after the gym. Very expensive. Conclusion: it is more expensive to eat more healthy. I will definitely eat less meat moving forward. I will also balance my fish intake. Eating vegetarian 3 or 4 days a week is what I am shooting for addition to having one day (if at all) of a land meat and the rest of the days for seafood.

    I am highly inspired by your videos. My husband is a vegetarian. I have observed he has a very good health. I tried to become like him but it was very very difficult. I practiced somehow for 1 and half years. But found that I cannot control my greed for fish. So I end up becoming a ,"pescatarian"😅😅. Namaste🙏.

    Hi Aki, thank you for sharing. Since 1981 my husband and I are eating like this and we look quite young and still feel fresh, so: no worries. I prefer vegan, my husband likes fish from time to time, especially going out for fishing… and dairy. We include small amounts of eggs, cheese and add fermented things like yogurt, sauerkraut, Kim Chi. VERY SMALL use of sugar, white flour or white rice. We have a tiny garden with fruit and veggies and a mill to make flour from grains or rice. Believe me: my husband is the strongest 67 y old man I know. Younger people have difficulties to follow him on ice skates, in-line skates or the bicycle. He goes to competitions all over the world. Maybe you’ll meet one day: as far as I remember, there’ll be a ice competition in Japan in the future ( Masters class ). I enjoy your different interests and tests… what does your family think about that? Our families thought, we were quite crazy… giving up all the joys. It’s difficult to explain, how much better and more fresh you can feel with fitting food and habits. Stay strong, healthy and happy, love from Germany, Monika❣

    Good for you for doing this challenge! Not all meat eaters would be brave enough to try the challenge. Last year, I studied the Blue Zones in the world which are the healthiest places on earth. One of them was Okinawa, Japan as you probably already know. I looked at the food and thought "I like that kind of food, I could eat it every day". So I became vegan (I had already been a vegetarian for 30 years), changed my eating to be a healthy Asian based diet. It's mostly Japanese, some Chinese and a little bit Korean. And I changed over to eating with chopsticks since it slows your eating. The results? I dropped 61 pounds (too many years of two jobs that demanded a lot and had to work 12 to 16 hours a day-I have since left to work in a healthier environment), and I now walk 2 3/4 miles six nights a week. I feel great! And I'll never have a weight probably again. We have a number of Asian markets here in my hometown in Pennsylvania. One is fantastic with a lot to offer. They have all the things I need like natto and matcha tea, seaweed salad, mung bean sprouts, leeks, tofu, Japanese pumpkin and red bean mochi for a treat or dried seaweed snacks. I also buy purple sweet potatoes and Japanese sweet potatoes at Whole Foods Market.They also have different fruits like Korean melon, Golden Hami, and mandarin oranges which are so good. I am always looking on You Tube for healthy Japanese food ideas which has been a great resource. Good for you for trying a new way of eating. Not everyone is that brave. :)

    In India Hindus are strictly prohibited from eating any animal, eggs and seafood. I.e. Strict lacto-vegetarians for at least 2500 years or as old as Hinduism is. Modern day Hindu Indians sadly are adopting the Western diets. But my ancestors practiced a violence free, ahimsa and ayurvedic diet of eating PLANTS only with dairy only on SPECIAL occassions because cows are sacred. While I was taught this growing up here in the West I did not practice this until 5 years ago when I went Vegan .. .which is this new fancy term in the West for what Indians have been doing forever!
    1. I do NOT eat anything from anyone with eyes or a mother.
    2. I do NOT eat processed foods
    3. I eat WHOLESOME PLANTS LIKE VEGETABLES AND FRUIT, BEANS, LENTILS, RICE, GRAINS, SEEDS, HERBS + SPICES.
    4. There is an initial detox period which you seemed to have exhibited in your video. Once your body has detoxed those unpleasant side effects will go away. If you research the medical science on how and why you will understand.
    Thank you for this amazing video. Loved it! You have a unique style of taking videos that is just entertaining yet clearly conveying an important message! I also love to learn about Japan, other cultures and the Edo period is much like ancient India! Much love and peace.

    My ultimate goal is to become Whole Food Plant Based. I have a hard time giving up seafood though. So for now, I too am Pescatarian. But what a difference in my weight after I challenged myself to give up sugar and cut way down on salt and oil as well.

    ive been raw vegan for 5 years. which means no meat or, animal bi-products, gluten, food additives, cooked food, or processed food. some people might think that im restricting my body but i don't feel restricted at all, i feel completely healthy. i haven't been sick in 6 years. all im saying is as long as you listen closely to your body you will be healthy :)

    thank you for showing that reading labels and understanding what all the ingredients are, even though sometimes I have to do research to know exactly what it means. I eat as fresh as possible and leave processed foods on the store shelves.

    I don't eat meat since one year or so. It was something that developed over time. I was never able to eat lots of meat, but loved it like I learned from my family. Now me and my wife are the strange ones 😂
    Oh and we never liked earing fish except for sushi 🤣

One more thing, those who are trying to consume vegan diet, please beware of withdrawal syndrome from your body as it's weaning from meat.     It’s common for pescatarians to later turn into a vegetarian or vegan. I’m vegan and have enjoyed lots of sushi and tempura (yes, there is ways! ❤️) in a plant based way. I enjoy watching these videos. Very relateable

      @@bublymonkey You can make sushi vegetarian/vegan using sweet potatoes, tofu, cucumbers, avocado, ect (those kinds of ingredients) instead of fish

      I’m a Pescetarian so I can eat most kinds of sushi but I swear vegetarian/vegan sushi is really underrated. Avocado-based rolls are both satiating and good tasting. I order plant- based sushi more often than seafood sushi.

      I am 95% vegetable diet , eating meat only once a week and only about an oz...i feel better now than i have ever felt as well! Sadly the vegetables are giving me serious problems in the gut department but i am getting better slowly!

    Hey. Today, I discovered your channel through CZcams's video recommendations and I've been learning a lot from your videos. I've already watched a few. I'm in process to become minimalist (I'm almost there but not yet) and I've wondered if you ever thought about becoming vegan. I'm vegan myself (almost 3 years heh) and heard you mention that you don't eat dairy and meat anymore. I have an idea that being vegan in Japan is really hard but your lifestyle is so out of the common that I think it would be easy peasy for you.

    I tried this too but started to crave burgers and Steaks in the middle of the night. I consciously make an effort to stick with my pescatarian diet but I couldn't stick. Now I eat red meats for 2 days out of the week and the other 5 days are dedicated to only seafood. I feel satisfied.

    I am pescatarian and my partner is vegetarian. This means we seek out sushi places in the US with options for her. She likes tempura vegetable sushi like sweet potato and green bean. We recently found a place that peels and prepares bell peppers to look like fish 🍣 We also like vegetarian miso ramen with a little bok choy and an egg on top (though we make that at home). Thanks for trying a new way of eating!

    I can imagine it is hard to be vegetarian or pescatarian in Japan. Now I live in Germany and here it is even easy to be vegan which is almost impossible in Japan.
    I’ve been pescatarian for 2 years and am trying to shift to WFPB diet now😊

      Its easy to be pescatarian in Asia. Seafood is abundant and cheaper than in the West and on the flip side red meat is more expensive. Fish is a staple in Asia.

    You can eat amazing vegan and vegeterian sushi, I highly recommend experimenting in your kitchen. You will be suprised how many new flavors and combinations you can get by trying to veganise your favorite non vegeterian meals. The world of delicious and nutricious food is very wide and fascinating!❤️

      At the sushi place near where I live they make sushi out of fried tofu, seaweed salad, avocado and rice. It’s pretty good 🥰

    Could you please do a video about Japanese culture either today or historically that specifically highlights minimalists practices or philosophy. This might be because of Japan's Buddhist or Shinto beliefs, its military history, its geography and lack of agricultural land or the specific challenges it faces due to earthquakes. I think these things influence the Japanese mindset in positive ways that are interesting to explore. I hope you think so too. Thank you as always.

    I just stumbled on your channel today. And honestly im obsessed with it! For the longest time I was looking to live a minimalist lifestyle. And now that i start my graduate studies, its the perfect time to do so! (Mainly to save money haha)
    On a side note: have you considered trying a low carb diet? Something like keto or just low carbs, high animal protein and fat.

      @Alsanounah. Don’t do keto. Makes gall stones. Lose gall bladder. Just do 6 oz lean meat, veggies, low carb. If you do t eat more than 12 grams carb from a grain at a time you’ll never be hungry. carbs trigger appetite. Keto isn’t sustainable long term. Then when you try to add stuff back in it will be very difficult. I tried it and i couldn’t sleep and had severe anxiety. I’m on thyroid medicine so it messed up my metabolism What it does is make the pancreas to stop making insulin. But insulin is needed for other body functions besides glucose metabolism. Insulin is a hormone that does many things the body needs.

    Hi Aki! I am so happy you got through your pescatarian challenge. I guess you can take it gradually, like eating meat 2x a month and fish and veggies for the rest. Or maybe, if you miss meat, you can eat mushrooms or tofu!

      @@SamuraiMatcha I love steam fish cook, steam veggies with natural flavor a little salt, pepper, soy sauce and olive oil. No sugar but my oncologist told me if your craving make it sure small portions to taste only. I measured all my food with small bowl. No any kind of meat, eggs, milk ( I choose almond milk it’s more healthy) by the way fish I ate it’s wild fish rather than farm, check if it is wild seafood or farm. Search the difference, you’ll figure out what is the healthy fish. Of course snack is fruits.
      Anyways, thanks for the reply. TC stay healthy and safe. Don’t forget to to exercise, vitamins and sleep more than 7or 8 hours.

    As always, an interesting video. Very varied style, keep up the good work!
    Here in Germany it is not uncommon to eat vegetarian. Even in restaurants there are often suitable choices and meat substitutes are becoming more and more popular. Even Sushi restaurants offer a wide range of vegetarian items. I was really surprised that in Japan a completely different way of thinking exists. I found it quite funny that you were in sorrow, that eating not meat will worsen your body. At least in my generation people often think that meat is unhealthy and plant-based eating is good (I have to mention that the German kitchen relies heavily on meat and only young students might think this way :D)

      Thanks! I know more people in western countries are vegetarian than in Japan, which is great! Even in our generation, we relies on a lot of meat. I hope Japanese people will realize how vegetarian is cool.

    Try for a longer time:) First month it s the hardest one. With time you can learn more recipes and your body will get used to this lifestyle. Maybe you can add sweet pea and chickpea to your meals.
    I 'm vegan since 2015 and i have no regrets about that

    I really like this channel, it's quite interesting the way you describe things and daily situations. I would have liked to know more about the benefits. In Mexico , we eat a lot of meat like twice or trice a day sometimes and i see japanese people in my town puuff extremely lean sometime they look like corpse 💀and of course it's a cultural clash to see almost all japanese people so skinny. Well, the positive thing is that Japan has the longest life expectancy. Hmm also mention that i saw your six pack in this video , is it because of the pesquetarian diet¿?? Thank you!!!     I have done pescatarian and did limited carbs (not keto). I felt great, healthy, lost weight. My only concern has been fish conservation and ocean depletion. I love salmon, but we are doing such a poor job of conserving them in North America, and our fish farms are highly problematic. But after watching this video, I think tonight I will have some salmon, steamed spinach and shiitakes, plus a little rice with natto.

    it's insane how your body adapted in only one month. because of the increase in carbs, your weight and body fat went up, then your body realised "oh nvm this is ok" and you plateaued again. then again, it was probably all the fiber and happy digestion :D

    Thank you for being so honest and mentioning bowel movements and so on. I’m happy you went through with it! How does Japan stand on the metals and pollution in fish? Especially sea fish? There are so many metals and chemicals in fish because of the pollution like mercury and so on. And do people really eat dolphins and so on as part of school meals? Do average Japanese people know about sharks and whales and mantas going extinct because of overfishing and eating them? You said that many people just believe the media and supposedly they wouldn’t mention that. I love you videos and Japan and Japanese culture, but some aspects are critical, just as everywhere else. Thank you for showing so much about your culture in such a fun way!

    I've not eaten meat consciously as a low dairy, low egg pescatarian for 6 years in the UK. Before that I was a pollotarian for 3 years. Where I only cut out meat from mammals. But it was very, very difficult because a lot of chicken and turkey options were mixed in with beef and pork and I didn't like eating reptiles like birds while also having a pet lizard that I loved as much as a cat or dog.
    Once you've been pescatarian for a while you start to figure out cheaper ways of making food and finding fish and seafood for cheaper. I'm now easily able to live on £20-£30 a fortnight groceries.
    The most interesting thing about going pescatarian is that it opens up food options that I wouldn't even have considered as a meat eater and because not so many other people are eating those options, they're both easier to find and cheaper to buy as they get closer to the ends of their shelf life. I didn't used to like anchovies or mussels or prawns before I stopped eating meat. But now I actively hunt them out on menus and anchovies are one of my favourite pizza toppings.
    This is one of the problems about being pescatarian or vegetarian or vegan for only a short time, because you haven't developed new tastes and habits that take longer than a month to acquire.
    Regardless, since reducing my dairy and egg intake and stopping eating meat, my health has been so much better than when I did eat meat. I struggled with problems with my blood and was constantly battling four different types of anaemia. But now my blood work is the best it's ever been and has stayed consistent. My skin is better because I'm not taking in all those hormones. I haven't caught a cold, which I used to get all the time, in nearly three years and they're very rare in general. I also used to get a lot of chest and kidney infections but that doesn't happen now or very often either and when I do get sick I get better quicker.
    I also need to eat less in a day. I'm usually fine with one or two main meals, usually one meal split into two servings, with a snack of fruit in the morning instead of four with various snacks in between back when I ate meat. And because you eat less, you spend less on food and the food you buy lasts longer.
    I'm glad you've brought awareness to the benefits of this lifestyle change in the short amount of time you've tried it, and taught those of us looking to spend some time in Japan in the future what challenges we might face during our stay if we have different dietary requirements.

      Tell me how to eat my anchovies on something healthy. I can’t eat pizza because of too many carbs and too much saturated fat in cheese. Cheese gives me seborrhea, makes me sick. Have a jar of anchovies and don’t know what to put it on.

      @@tankster5826 You can actually grill or fry them and they can become little bacon-ish bites. But you keep them on low heat and do it quickly because they can burn quickly. They also melt into sauces and can be mixed into rice and lentils.

      Wow! I like the baconish bites idea and the lentil idea. Do you have good sauce ideas for them? I am trying to avoid carbohydrates and dairy. Carbohydrates cause inflammation for me. I did keto and cured lung issues for a while but keto was very bad other ways. I realized lungs were only better because of dehydration. Seemed I had less allergies over all though. I’m diabetic but can control with right eating. My favorite lazy food is a protein plant based shake for controlling that. But anchovies are great when craving salt and junk. Diabetes isn’t controlled well right now and it is damaging body badly. Need to lose weight and female which is harder. I’m doing lots of pure ground white meat chicken sauté in skillet with lots of veggies.

    One of the reasons I would love to live in Japan is seafood, here in Ukraine seafood is very expensive and not that fresh. I have friend in Tokyo and they are teasing me with stuff right out of the ocean at half the price QQ

    As an American I don't eat meat that includes beef,pork & now chicken
    I eat a lot of sushi and I love it !
    I do eat eggs because of the benefits to the eyes (blindness runs in my family). I feel eggs in moderation are a perfect food
    But my staple is fruit & matcha !
    I do struggle when I dine with friends to find something I want on a menu because the food here is so salty & many things I can't even eat if I try
    It's very true if you change your diet for the good your body will stop wanting & even allowing consumption of many unhealthy items

    I’m pescatarian. You eat mostly vegetarian/plant based whole foods-seafood, dairy, and egg in moderation.
    To feel full you need to eat more whole grains, vegetables, legumes for fiber/protein. Legumes is very cheap so you didn’t need to only eat rice. Btw cheap way you can get fish is canned fish like sardines. Very healthy as you can eat the bones. Just watch out for oil and high sodium though.
    I wish I live back in Asia. Seafood is abundant with many varieties (although you need to choose the ones low in mercury) and way more affordable than in the West.

    You don’t need tons of alternatives for protein it’s in everything. Your probably not full after that bread because it’s highly processed air. You need to fill up on low processed carbs.

    I've became vegetarian over 30 years ago and vegan for more than 10 years. I've been advised to start eating fish for brain health, memory care and longevity. So I may become pescatarian too, but I'm having a hard time mentally adjusting to the idea!!

      The omega 3 in fish (it’s responsible for brain health) is actually from the algae that the fish eat. If you want to get omega 3 from a healthier source you can get it from the algae itself or from things like chia seeds. Fish used to be a lot healthier than it is now (because of water pollution and higher Mercury content) so getting your omega 3 from the plant sources can be a lot safer 😁

      @@earthenthusiast3422 I agree and have been taking vegan Omega3 but there is some issue with the chemical used to extract the omega3 and the use of carrageenan as part of the carrier. Wild sourced mercury free fish (if it can be found) was recommended to me as a safer way to get the benefits. I have not dived ( no pun intended!) into more research as I am not mentally in a place to start consuming sea life yet; but I am open to hearing the research from those studying inflammation, brain health and healthy aging.

    ^_^ most people don't know pescatarian but I did this for two years. Sorry I probably can't show you recipes, or ship things. Two very good foods are dal with rice and sugar free muesli. I ate these when broke through phd, in the mountains, camping across the US. Mm.. maybe these are too simple for you, but I hope you can also enjoy one day!

    IMO the pescetarian diet is the the one that makes the most sense in every way. Healthwise, ethically and financially.
    Fish have necessary and additional nutrients and less fat. So you're not restricted in your diet.
    Ethically, you're not eating something thats been mass produced ( I'm guessing it depends on where you live though. The fish we have from the sea or rivers). You're naturally fitting into the food web without consuming unethically produced and unhealthy meat.
    And it's easily accessible so it's practical and can be fitted into your budget.

    Fun video! I’ve been 100% vegetarian for over three decades, many of those years as vegan….and my mom always cooked brown rice. I’ve ‘regressed’ to white rice as an adult, it seems more pleasant. Seeing your delicious looking brown rice here is inspiring! What kind of brown rice do you make? Maybe I’m just not buying the right type, longer grain ones are most common in the US. Perhaps yours is much better?
    Love the channel, makes me feel less alone with my minimalist tendencies. :-)

      Whole foods used to have a very short fat brown rice in bulk very cheap that was very sweet and good with rice milk and sweetener and tasted like dessert. The shorter and fatter the grain the more sugar in it. That is why asians eat dessert rice called sticky rice. It will be very sticky when cooked. It comes in brown variety or white rice.

    When I started eating meat after many years of being vegetarian I felt surprisingly good. But I prefer lean meat like poultry and fish. I also limited carbs in my diet and added more healthy fats. Flexitarianism is the best option for me.

    The Japanese were the longest lived people on the planet until the 'younger generation' adopted the western style diet - meat, poultry, dairy and processed foods which were introduced in the last 50 years. Hence the explosion of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, ALS, MS etc. The traditional diet of vegetables, rice and fish is the diet of the older Japanese - allowing for one of the biggest populations of centenarians in the world. The Okinawa Diet still followed by the elders is the healthiest of all - allowing them to be called one of the Planet's 'Blue Zones', hence the name of the book - 'The Blue Zones'. Meat, dairy and processed food are killers, and responsible for all of the chronic diseases of contemporary man. By the way, rather then rice, the Okinawa's eat purple sweet potatoes rather then huge amounts of rice. If you want to guard your health in to your elder years, without falling prey to the modern diseases we face, best to go Vegan. If you can't do that (very doable as I've been vegan 40 years and am in perfect health), add small amounts of fish. Ditch the dead bodies and animal excretions for maximum well being. The award winning documentary films ' The Game Changer's', 'What the Health' 'Earthlings' 'Forks Over Knives' 'Eating you Alive' - will open the eyes. The longer one remains meat and dairy free the better one feels, mentally, physically, spiritually 🙏

      this comment felt like an ad for veganism lol, but honestly, it should be a given that eating intensely fatty and hardy foods would make your body shut down. food is purely emotional now, only going for tastes rather than nutrients. once i cut out red meat, i lost 10 lbs, and another 7 with bread. i'm now actually underweight for my height, but i'm working on that with muscle. ANYWAY, if one should eat meat, it should 100% be fish, as that has the greatest benefits imo

      As someone in Okinawa, there is still egg, pork, and fish in traditional Okinawan diet. The blue zones are known to also be very social, outdoorsy, and health minded. It’s not just diet and veganism is not the way Okinawa became a blue zone.

      @@indiag6361 true. They love to eat pork, it's the special dish for them. They eat a lot of local mushrooms, sweet potatoes, tofu, natto and matcha with jasmine infusion. But the mean thing is the life style. Work in their orchards, and specially socialize. In a book about 100 old people in Okinawa where some of them are interviewed, to the question of what do you like to do more, all the answers were: to be with my friends, go with my friends to dance everyday, go to the karaoke everyday with my friends, all like that.

    Probably the Japanese in e do period ate more rice and sushi because they did a lot of manual work. Today they eat less fish and rice because most of the jobs aren’t. And it’s possible to be very healthy being vegan.

    Aki, question about raw sushi. I would like to eat more fish sushi, but my doctor husband says NO! He says there are too many cases of ringworm in the US from raw fish. Why not in Japan?

    very well done videos with useful info. i did not know that the meat prohibition lasted so long...it was a great contribution to japanese culture...too bad it did not persist. may i suggest a vegan addition to your diet?
    soak and rinse pink lentils, add ground up pumpkin seeds and pink salt, blend into a batter and make waffles
    or pancakes...add any toppings you like. enjoy.

      @@tankster5826 hi, yes they are orange and you can use the clean soak water. add a little himalayan pink salt to your taste. ground up pumpkin seed gives batter a better texture than just lentils alone. try 10% and adjust up or down to taste.

      @@tankster5826 the skin of the lentils contain lectins which are harmful to the intestine...that is why the red ones are the best because the skin has been removed. mung beans are high in purines.

      @Thanks for the info. I don’t like the skins. Orange ones taste so good, Purines are ok for me as long as there are no gout issues. They lower blood sugar which prevents gout. Diabetes is a huge cause of gout. Sprouting mung beans removes toxins too. Only lentils I like with skins are the french black ones, except I like beige ones like a hummus. I don’t eat enough beans to worry about lectins. I can only have 1/3 cup at a time. you’re real smart and up on things.

    There is no point in eating brown rice for nutrition value, its harder to digest than white rice and both forms of rice have very little nutrition in them you're eating rice for carbs/sugar/energy not nutrition so just eat whatever rice you're hyped to eat and get your nutrition from that amazing looking fish
