      I thought the same thing. I cant much blame them though I couldnt buy the parts and build that pickup for near that. I don't know how that guy can put out such nice pickups for the price... hes gotta have connections in Mexico or China. His company is based in California. I didnt expect it to be bad but I didnt expect it to be so great! I figured I could rewind it, change magnet or pot it if it was stuffy sounding or really microphonic but, I put it in the test mule guitar when it came in and was floored. I was just like WOW! this LP jr is gonna kick major @ss!

      @@heavymetalATC yeah dude it would be hard to build even a single coil for $20 let alone sell it for that price and turn a profit. still, that's a killer deal regardless of how they put it together.

    Been there done that and still doing it! 5yrs ago I bought a $70 Maestro Les Paul Junior from a pawnshop with the intention of beefing it up with a hotter humbucker until I bought a Maestro SG Junior a month later beefing it up putting the LPJ on the backburner until 3yrs later when I decided to give it a P90 makeover and a properly compensated wraparound bridge; needless to say that this baby definitely rocks!
    I made the makeover happen with a soapbar P90 and made a bezel ring with craft sticks and a black styrene sheet... WHOA JACK! Lesmo was good to go! Great video... and Link Wray's 'Rumble' was one of several riffs I played too as sure as I'd drop a P90 in a cheap Les Paul Junior again!

I also have a black one with the humbucker that I picked up a couple of years ago with the amp that they came with in the package deal for $ 75.

    I watched this vid months ago, and enjoyed it again today. Great job. I love the Junior, and the P90. It might be time to get one to do this conversion.... even if not so pretty. I got a hundred dollar Epi Special a while back to do the conversion, but the cheap humbuckers sounded decent enough for living room playing that all I did was put shiny chrome covers over them, as if that mattered... the alleged tobacco burst is still ugly orange and black, and I haven't wanted to take it apart to make it tobacco stain brown around ochre yeller like real ones had back in my day. But I still want to do the P90 swap on something... a Junior. If I find a black one, it'll stay that way. .....BTW, I have that little amp. That you and the guitar got it to sound so good speaks volumes. Thanks Cuz!

    • @petset77
      @petset77 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Just got my Junior..... a few more bucks than you paid (because of shipping), but someone already put in a humbucker fit P90 AND a saddle adjustable bridge. Yeah, it's a black one so I'm not going to sand it's face (maybe). I'm also getting a twenty buck GM P90, just because. It sounds pretty good as is like the Special with the humbuckers, but I know real P90s at 9.6k ohms and humbucker sized ones are different. For twenty bucks, it'll be worth having around.

When I showed up the girl asks if I can give her $25 extra and have the Gibson les paul Junior thats in pieces inside it. I check it out and its like a 10 year old was trying to refinish it. Spray painted Kluson tuners and bridge. Sanded as weakly as possible. Damaged to say the least. The P-90, ruined. I said yes because I'm stupid.... Sat under my bed in the case for 2 years. Wiring it up shortly. Its refinished natural. Unreal guitar. I had to do a lot more than you did, its $25 guitar with $2k worth of labor...... Thanks for the video.

      Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to write such an awesome comment Rob. Nothing really hard here, the finish repair is tedious as hell but if you mess it up (like I did) and burn through you already have the stuff out to repair it again like I did when I reapplied the black paint and clear again and re-cut it. The rubbing compound is the star of the show as long as everything is level and all the scratches are sanded out progressively it'll buff to a gloss.
      Hey I'm broke and I want things so I might as well document the whole deal for the benefit of others. I learned most all this stuff from the internet myself so its only right to add to it and pass it on. Hey man, That is a Great slogan! I gotta put that in my notes right now! Hell I'm gonna write that on a post it and stick it to the monitor. Awsome! Thanks again Rob, good 1.

    You crack me up! I got a new Epi Melody Maker for $160 new, then got a new pickguard and put 2 new Lindy Fralin matched p90's and cut the pickguard to fit. Then I had good wiring made for it, and it really sounds nice. Yes, the Fralins were $236, pickguard $40, wiring $95, but now i have my poor boy 50's Les Paul and it looks really nice and sounds great. I have a kit lpjr style guitar and I changed the soapbar p90 to a dogear. I decided I needed a shim to lift up the p90, so I went to the auto parts store and bought an $11 gasket material set of about 5 different thicknesses. I picked the one that worked, then cut out the shim to match the dogear cover, then painted it black. With yours, you could do the same thing, and cut the shim a little wider to cover the holes and slots, paint it black, and i'll bet it would look great!

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment Michael. I had actually debated getting a melody maker. When I was looking on reverb I saw the prices on the new ones and was like WOW! I saw a yellow one with white guard and I was thinking heck I can get 2 p90s from this same guy on ebay for like 35 bucks and make it like a LP special but I figured I'd probably have to use soapbars to fit the pickguard and clear the knobs and the pots were most likely 250K but, I almost went that route and may yet do so in the future... Also I just had a thing for the dogear look and the single pickup design.. I blame CZcams for brainwashing me. Its like the closest thing Gibson made to a Fender Esquire 1 pickup no tune-o-matic just a flat slab with the bare minimum amount of parts. I dig that! Its a rugged simple tool.
      Good Idea on the gaskets I saw that the guy I got my pickup from does actually sell a riser gasket for dogears as I too noticed the p90 was a little low compared to the bridge. The Humbucker route and screw holes are not actually noticeable now though so I opted to just raise the pole screws about 1/4 inch. I read or sasw a video somewhere that said Duane Allman used to sink his pickups and raise the poles way up on purpose for better sound. I dont know if this is true? But it did wake this one up. Damn man I gotta say I like the way you think, our thought processes seem to be very similar indeed. Thanks again brother I appreciate the interest, information and friendly banter.

      @@heavymetalATC Thanks for the compliment. I grew up having to make what I wanted, and it's fun. First guitar I ever played was my Dad's 50's Silvertone w. a 2x4 thick neck. My Fralin p90's were soapbar, easier to accomplish to keep the Melody Maker look even though they are wider. Hey, a project might be to make a slim p90 or a slim humbucker out of cheap stuff that fits in a Strat or the thin slots of pickguards. When I was looking for riser shims for the p90, Allparts makes a real wide one that would have worked perfect with your project. But it was $20+ and others are like $30+. My gasket kit was $11.

    The days of bargains on eBay are long gone. I bought a 1990 Aria Pro II SLB-2 bass on eBay a few years ago for £35 (about $50)....I saw one the other day for £200! Crazy! But it does sound fantastic (especially now I've put a set of EMGs in it!)

      Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to write a comment Chris. Yea, I just wrote a big 3 paragraph rant but I erased it as it seemed like it could have been taken as political but in general I think a big part of it for me is that my mind hasnt yet caught up to the fact that a buck is not the same dollar it was 2 years ago and a pound isn't a quid anymore... its like 80p or less now. The reasons for that we will leave for another day but my brain is stuck in the past I still think a cheap guitar is $100. Ugh I sound like old people, "back in my day in 2018 we walked to the shipyard at 4am in the snow with no boots." Hahahaha.

    Great video ! I recently went to Sam Ash to buy an amplifier to use for my Yamaha keyboards and also to use as a " boom box " for MP3 player and other sound devices . I bought the Fender Frontman 20G for $100 . Before leaving , I couldn't resist looking at the guitars . A new Squire strat for $259 caught my eye . I couldn't justify or afford that kind of money , as I don't play guitar . Then as I walked by the used guitar rack , an Epiphone LP Junior with the humbucker pickup for $69 jumped out at me . I had to have it ! I really didn't have the money . I went home and got my Yamaha pss-a50 keyboard and traded it and about $10 for for the Epiphone . I really don't care for the sound of humbuckers compared to p-90 pickups , and the Epiphones fitted with the p-90 were crazy expensive .The guitar looks , sounds , and plays great , but still doesn't have that p-90 sound . After seeing your video , I ordered a Wilkinson dogear p-90 on Amazon for $22 . Same specs as the one on this video . Still waiting for it .
    Thanks for this very informative video . I will soon have a high quality single p-90 pickup guitar for less than $100 ! Thanks again .

They make a gasket/spacer that could cover some boo boos around it if you got any also if the pickup aint hot enough for you raise those screws... i did mine and it went to 11. Great deal you got going man!!!

      After a bout with covid , the dog ear pickup finally arrived . I spent about 4 hours on the retrofit . It turned out well . I was careful to get the pickup centered perfectly . I ran into one problem . The pickup was about .062 inch too low . I compensated by raising the poles . Eventually , I plan to fabricate a shim plate 1/16 inch thick to fit under the pickup , but for now it works fine .
      Just when I thought I was done with guitar modifications , I found an Epiphone Les Paul Special - II L.T.D. in excellent condition for less than $100 at a pawn shop . I couldn't resist ! Now I have another project , but will be changing both pickups on this guitar . I'll be using Wilkinson dog ear p 90's on this guitar also , as these pickups sound great and cost less than $25 each .

      Yeah That dog ear is just cool for some reason like red rims with white walls. I discovered that a lot of my own prefeneces I couldnt really place and they contradicted others I have, Yeah a 59 burst with a carved top and pafs is probably the superior instrument in most every way "scientifically peaking" but a flat chunk-a wood with a bar bolted to it and a big @ss coil of copper sitting on 2 strong magnets makes the little kid inside me go... YEAH!!!!

    Stock pickup was way better. I had a kickass P-90 in my Gibson Les Paul special. But it didn't sound anything like that one you bought. I think the Ibanez GIO pickups are amazing. That guitar runs about $200.00. My son just bought one and it's good enough to gig with right out of the box. I was blown away. Low Action, no fret buzz and has great tone for dirty rock & metal. Even sounds decent on the clean tones too.

    • @heavymetalATC
      @heavymetalATC  Před 7 měsíci

      I have never tried to polish acrylic paint before but finger nail polish or car touch up paint like even spray glossy black spray paint into the lid and collect a drop and use it on a brush or tooth pick... that will buff up great. Clear gloss paint or clear fingernail polish over the acrylic also will work. Its all about getting that blend between them... It can be slightly different as long as the change is gradual you wont notice.

I swear with just those 2 mods you can make ANY guitar about 90% closer to all the classic recordings we all love. Its subtle but really becomes noticeable when playing with the vol/tone pots. 8 out of 10 of my guitars are 50s style 😂 strats and teles included!
