  • Filmed at Impact 2014 - MRS Annual Conference - Will Self wittily discusses the role of narrative in marketing and in life; the curse (or blessing) of 'everythingitis'; the primacy of creativity over objectivity; how to become a more effective consumer and his own personal take on memory and behavioural economics. Interviewed by Martin Lee, director, Acacia Avenue.

The fact Will Self can recall a Bill Hicks routine completely unscripted and on the spot is seriously impressive.

As I follow the work of Self, I'm certain he's living what should be my life. Know I'm reluctant to say, he's our 21st Century Shakespeare.

All the people that are berating Will Self, what did you expect to see by the title of the video? Did you not expect to see Will Self, so if you don't like what he says why sit here and watch it?

And you can forget storytelling in marketting. Just get a couple of furry talking rodents and Brits will buy whatever you are selling!

What is wrong with the commenters here, an opinion is entirely based on your standing and let me tell you, you negative minded internal dwelling humans. That once you're an established author or journalist even some sort of professional practitioner, then your opinion with have authenticity. I get the appeal the internet challenges our opinions and views after all we hold them so deeply sacred to us and once thats challenged we express fear and anger. Try be open to infinite truths to one subject area, i assure you the delusions that you see and feel are entirely you're own.

"Everything interesting"? Whether that statement is true, or not, or useful, or not, are the fundamental questions haunting Will's Art, since Art is more about what the Artist chooses to leave out than what He/She stuffs in. In order to choose what to leave out, the Artist needs to internalize the sense of a merciless aesthetic hierarchy; the Artist, in other words, needs to be a cruelly Judgmental God. An infant of six-months-old is interested in Everything and her/his perceptions may be pristine and astonishing for that reason... but would a novel somehow written by such an Interested-in-Everything creature be... Interesting?
Will's extemporaneous lecture on carpets/ domestic space just proves that there are far more words than there are Interesting topics to use them on.
Despite the risk inherent in linking to my blog from such a mildly critical comment... (laugh).... it would be nice to have one of the Self-selectingly clever viewers of Will's clip stop by...

I love how Will Self very subtly takes the piss out of the marketing industry and behavioural economics. Hilarious how the host got noticeably annoyed a few times. It's also obvious that the marketing and econ twats commenting here don't 'get' Self because instead of engaging with what he actually says they can only sneer at him (and call him a leftist lol).

*deep snore*. The reason you can project this image of a latent dictator onto Self is because it is a latent hope in yourself. "Hard wing leftist"? What is that exactly? Is it not easier to just state that you are right-wing and some of Self's views jar with your own (inherited and swallowed wholesale) simplistic propaganda?
As well as admitting that you are just unable to read Self's books. That's your shortcoming, not his.
