Its also worth considering creating vassal who have many siblings and grant them counties inside one same duchy. Kinda fun observing them duking it out for their inheritance rather than banded together against you

Honestly I underrated how good it is to form intervassal rivalries. Any powerful vassal that you can't fit in your council doesn't dredge up any support against you if they're hated by all their neighbors. Even better if he's killed or imprisoned in a siege or battle. Then he officially can't do anything while you still pool taxes and levies from them

For the steward tip during tribal time, i always go for increase dev. Sure dev don't do much for tribal, but, there is a couple of events that triggers that really help. You can get some taxes, construction time and cost reduced for buildings, popular opinion and increased taxes in the county. And the event where you get taxes, the amont of gold you gain increases as your dev in the county go up, because of that i prefer to put my stewart to increase dev and not to get taxes even as tribal, and the plus for when you go feudal/clan you have a go dev in your capital.

I find that the 'one vassal - one county' strategy depends on the size of your realm. I think that if you have a realm with multiple potential duchy titles, in addition to the ones you can hold personally, it can make more sense to create the relevant duchies and get the prestige for yourself. Not only does it mean that you're having to manage only 4/5 dukes instead of 20+ counts, if each county within that duchy is held by a separate vassal, the duchy holders are going to spend a lot of time being distracted by their own internal vassal wars.

    • @MYPSYAI
      @MYPSYAI Před rokem +12

I try to make my vassals as powerful as possible. The higher rank, the more men at arms. If they have good cbs (conquest) then they will expand and if you run an empire it can grow significantly through vassal wars without spending any mana or getting an offensive war score.

    • @laszlobandi6456
      @laszlobandi6456 Před rokem +2

My strategy revolves around the council. Tribal and custom religions can do 5 but usually you get 4 councilors.
You take the most valuable duchy, then one more, at least the capital of it. Holy sites and gold mines or whatever valuable.
The powerful vassals are ordered by tax and army so with equal lands the strongest are the ones with highest stewardship and martial but also the best contracts you got with them. That's with equal size land with similar development. So you can make them powerful by pushing up the contract, giving them more land. So I never take the recommended councilors, and never use diplomacy to play nice with them, especially not with foreigners, unless they are much better than my dynasty/culture.
Same culture lands are stable, and easy to keep or recover for long term. So safe side is my steward and diplo guy. Diplomacy helps him being on good terms with others, stewardship for stewards is good to either develop very bad lands or get more out of the best lands. I'm generally steward myself too.
I generally marry my girls to get high skill stewards or diplo so I get the ruling class going, for many generations. If they got the same focus, they can be really high skill, I get good relations with them and generally easy to manage, sometimes you need to imprison them and remove their claims on you but after that the family is just pure positivity toward you.
Intrigue is risky and plots are chaotic so I don't tend to breed for intrigue, just choose the best there is, and keep it smaller so they don't go overboard.
For marshalls I get multiple. A good vassal is a strong martial commander but also at least one son with strong martial, and since they fight and die I get more of them. And put them on the edges of the empire or to torture different cultures.
Generally you want the least amount of kings, I don't mind having all my councilors as a duke and maybe a few more, but no more than 4 with multiple duchies. You don't want them to have 3 duchies, connected, that's a kingdom (unless you want to split big empires into kingdoms like Hungary which has like 11-13 duchies). SO you can have 4x2 duchies for councilors and just counties for the rest. You can also split duchies between 2 or more people so they never claim it and never form it. So like give neighboring duchies a county each and they are similar power so they won't fight. There is a healthy size for an empire, the smaller the better, as you still get renown and man at arms squad for any empire title but too many kingdoms and you got to take it back multiple times.
I keep the newly conquered lands split into tiny pieces until I convert culture the de jure and current capitals, that speeds up the process. Now I also hybridize, unless they are already similar or too weak. It's just best to eliminate cultures.
I like multiple religions tho, it's all about money and you get weak rebellions which give you control and a good commander that you recruit, also easy way to arrest leaders. I also intentionally reform or swap religion just so I can have a reason to imprison them for refusing the conversion. Also helps eliminating the smartass vassals, they are the ones refusing conversion and they are the one who got no council spot (unless custom religion where they can be the priest).
The key is understanding that your vassals also got vassals and building up your empire like that. You give a duchy to a vassal, you don't give the whole thing at once. You give it's capital and one county, you put a steward which is decent but not the best, since he has a county and it's inside the duchy you give him, he will become a powerful vassal for him and since he is good steward he gets the steward position. Next you give another duchy capital and then a diplo and a martial guy. You can give a spymaster too but it's risky. You formed your vassals council. He has more land, but has vassals who are making his council run well. If you randomly give 3 martial guys to someone 2 will be used off his forte so will be a bad council that makes mistakes.
Honestly, I played for long and you don't want your vassals to be weak. You can juggle the struggle, you want them to be strong, peaceful, to push development and army and taxes high, as then you get a percentage of it. Still better with direct vassals but if you go extreme on the development, you can actually be better off with 2 layers as you don't have to manage it. That's why I make my steward a king. He can earn a lot then I extort like 800 to 1000 gold from him. You don't want them to team up against you, that's why steward/admin is best, if you keep 4 powerful vassals happy, you got 55% of land then you are actually happy when the counts rebel and try to fight, as you can revoke lands and redistribute to family. Then when you got only your family/dynasty ruling every land, you just need to remove all their claims on you. Then you got all the shared bonuses with no risk. And eventually you can marry between houses and get even more value.
I don't like when my vassals marry each other, so I don't like female rulers because of this, because they mess up the land structure. Also I don't like when they get too many kids and splits up too much but generally I fix it slowly. But if you specialize families like the above script, you might get distinct looking steward family where each kid does what his father did, looks like him and all goes smooth. I had really compact tall builds where my councilors were crazy good and I had no conflict internally. It's a shame that raiding isn't a normal mechanic because often times I don't want to expand I just want to stir up trouble and steal some gold and trim the older vassals.

1:20 actually there is a distinction between courtiers and it's not easy to understand right away. lowborn and house. lowborns are capped at 2-3 kids. everyone has a coinflip chance to have 1 more kid per marriage. each rank is 1 more kid, so counts 3-4, dukes +2, kings+3, emperors +4. for ladies, the rank of their father. so it's valuable having any princess or empress of any tiny country too. also any house is better than lowborn, and lot of people see high stats on lowborns, but they should never be paired with other lowborns, unless you don't plan long term with them. every house is good long term, they build up renown and they got their own perks too. especially ladies are valuable, as their husbands die, you can get multiple housed knights for them or just drain their prestige with each marriage. even old ladies are useful as they equalize prestige with a young man then if they die, that guy has a better marriage next. you should start eliminating lowborn people by not hiring them, firing them, killing them, forcing them to be knights, and such, unless it's start of the game. a healthy court is 35 to 50 people, I managed to get 60+ consistently, even 100 is possible, but the chance of plagues or them leaving with no notice goes up, so 50ish is a good number. you can cull the number by killing low skill ones, sending away bad kids that didn't turn out good with their education (often the parent goes with them) or if you got many good ones, revoke cities with no tyranny and make them mayors. landed people are +2 for everyone, unlanded therefore is capped, that's why your daughters can have 8-9 kids but only 6-7 while in your court.and yeah, lowborns can have 4-5 too per couple. so it's worth recruiting any house members even if their skill is bad, they still get better marriage options and you can torture them before, or kill after the marriage and get more out of them than mixing lowborns for generations. knights are an exception but still better to have a housed knight with lower values than a lowborn with slightly higher.
3:20 you can get 3 perks in learning which are best on middle, but also theology seems to unlock the religious quest for one learning (repeatable quests with each priest you have), when reset, you can put on health and restraint to stop having kids. you can also go 2-3 diplo points (5 years) and get groom to rule, befriend, and probably gift bonus, all your kids get perks at age 3 and above, then reset (when you don't have any more kids and the youngest is 3+) and you get the perks again, which is 2-6 points (1-3 x2) to their chosen education. befriending is way better than swaying, you can do a hunt/feast and might complete it, you can get friends then invite to court, like physicians, mystics, pretty girls for your son, some artificers, your councilors, etc. there is a cultural pillar which unlocks befriending for your culture and it's op. I never go full diplomat, that's the boring game, but I often get 5 years on it, just for these 2-3 skills especially with a genius and a bigger family.
you can actually influence your kids personality. there are 5 combos, the 5 skills in order, pairs of 2 in between them, so like stewardship and martial makes them bossy (my favorite) or stewardship and learning is curious (somewhy makes worse stewards), the trick to it is adding your and your wives skill together and the pair of 2 should be the highest, so it's obvious that as a steward you want a stewardship focus wife, but the second best is martial and then learning, also 'sum of all skills' is generally easier for intrigue, that's why you get 'rowdy' or 'charming' more often. if some are equal, you get random kids but you can control what you get with choosing the right wife.
older characters swap wives and still get a lot of kids in a short time, you can marry them with close to 45 yo women so they get used to each other but just miss the deadline (might dump it on 45 otherwise) or select the castrated ones with a circle and an arrow in it, those can't make kids :D you can also dump a lot of titles on your son, who gets the rest anyway, the only bad thing is he gets a few courtiers and bad skilled friends and when he moves in your court, messes up some of it. but he can do his own hunts, feasts and gain experience and prestige before he steps on the throne. just try to do it 10 years max before your death, as you can't choose his wife after that.
best vassal management is having your council as dukes, maybe your steward as a king when you are emperor, have multiple martial based counts on newly acquired lands and borders, and your steward/diplo on the safe lands of your culture, convert or hybridize with other cultures for stability. you can build your council, first 5 is powerful, you can use the top 4 (unless custom or some tribal) so you don't need the high learning one who is bad at other things. their number of land usually is first indicator, then martial and stewardship gives them more armies and tax, so you also get more from them, but also the level of contract is making them more powerful since they give more to you. you can actually set taxes to 4 and levies to 2 right away and 'domestic affairs' for your diplomat can improve contacts so you get back those levies later which worth a free hook. with more tax you just buy more MAA and ignore levies, also you will be deceptively low army, needs a bit of skill to do this, as your neighbors might attack if you don't do it gradually, but you will invite attacks and defensive wars are awesome for gold. with counts only, will be a lot of infight and the criminals become dukes anyway then is hard to deal with them. tyranny is a resource, you can remove a county from someone every 5 years, or a duchy each 20 years, even more as an admin or tyranny loss artifact, and they will forgive you gradually, you can push higher tyranny with higher fame (older ruler) just stop it before death as your son inherits half of their opinion toward you. also don't remove the last holding of anyone, unless it says 100% it accepts, it always results in a war. you can also give one county then remove one and he should accept it usually. it's good to slowly piss off your vassals, when others won't join them, it's actually good. they would revolt anyway, you need to push them to do it early, and not together with others.
you can build your vassals council too, yes they have one. all you need to do is give them 2 duchies max, close but not need to be connected, give the counties for duchy capitals, don't give the entire duchy yet. fill the counties in those duchies or nearby with one each of steward, marshall, diplomat and maybe spymaster. the first 2 is essential the other 2 is optional. if you give one duchy, then give him 2 counties and a steward as a count, that ensures he has some advantage against rebellion, and you can give another neighboring count from a different duchy as a marshall. you give the duchy after your filled the counties. you can also kill a duke like this, giving an older high martial guy with low diplo and 2 counties, he will take over your bad vassal.
normally they just choose the council from city rulers and random courtiers and skills under 10-12 will get them bad events and bad income so in turn your taxes from them is also bad. if you build their council this way, they have higher control, higher income, functioning economy and beat rebels easier. only amateurs hope for vassals conflict. you want them to be peaceful and strong. so you drain their resources and push up their contracts slowly. long families can also have a specialization into a field like stewardship or martial, giving you the same councillor for next generation, so you won't have conflict on skills. overall I don't do intrigue families as they can kill me if they hate me, so I just choose a count or courtier then a vassal who is positive relation. high intrigue is often high in crime, randomness and useless drama. you should be the only criminal in your empire with a flock of sheep around.
if your councilors are dukes, there is less drama on who wants the council position, each time those multipliers come in it's -40 to someone, also bad councilors ruin things. you think you get more direct tax from more counts but the indirect effect is what it's worth making some dukes. they can also use their own council to help you. if you convert their duchy capital to your culture, they swap to that, and convert the rest for you, both culture and religion. single counts can't swap cultures for multiple counties, they can swap to their county culture if they are weak or you convert them 1 by 1. a lot of people keep swaying vassals and then their son will revolt on you anyway. just eliminate different cultures and families when you can, no point of diplomacy long term.

As another tip. Money and development is very important to tribal if you're wanting to step up into feudal. Especially important if you're not stewardship because feudal buildings are expensive as hell. And getting development up late game while you're dealing with debt is pretty tough, otherwise if you're aiming to stay in tribal until way later money should solve itself. Just remember that raiding is important for income and don't doubt the money you'll make off of it. Much like bribes for hooks and secrets raids (especially with someone that has raider) will deliver you valuable prisoners and they can be sold for quite a bit depending on the person. Capturing enemy leaders when you've taken the capital they can still be ransomed before you force peace, but if you force peace they're automatically released, so remember to ransom them! It's always 50 gold!

I'm not fan of the tip 25 "only counts as vassals" as I find it easier to manage and please 6 dukes than 30 counts (marry two of your siblings to your vassals and factions can't reach 100%). And having too much vassals become a nightmare with all the repeating events. For powerful (all the counties) or weak (one county and other lands of the duchy in the hand of counts) dukes, it depends of the situation : the latter is better if you want to have weaker and less threatening vassals but powerful dukes can give you way more troops and money.

Additional hint about these pesky spymasters to those that struggle with murder's poping out of the woodwork.
You can easily get quite high level spymasters by just finding wives for your knights. Things to pay attention to in addition to spymaster liking you: Greedy/ambitious combinations can get you killed out of the blue even if your spymaster likes you. Its guaranteed that they will take bribes if its offered to them!
Absolute best spymaster to have is 20+ intrique and content/craven traits on them. They will NEVER betray you!
If you have a spymaster that is loyal with 20+ intrique, pretty much nobody can be murdered in your court because everything gets discovered and 20 intrique is not at all rare to find. Just pay attention to this little detail and your gameplay should massively improve as you and your heirs dont die because of some mysterious ''accidents''!
Another tiny detail about your heir is to NOT grant them any titles. If you do so you lose control over what they do. They can die in battles and/or rank up stress and pick up tons of bad traits making your life much more complicated once you take over yourself!

I tend not to start messing with heir stuff until I'm 55. I know it risks having a bad succession but that's fine it's better than killing sons 5 and 6 in the Army death cheese only to have sons 3 and 4 legit die in battle and sons 1 and 2 to die of illness 😅 happened once to me. Never again. This game is so random sometimes lmao

Primogeniture but that is late era innovation in year 1200. Otherwise, you can disinherit or kill off the other heirs but then your dynasty doesn’t go far and wide. If your character has the learning education lifestyle, there is a perk to embrace celibacy. You won’t be fertile anymore.
If you want a certain kingdom or duchy for the heir you want, you can add a law to that title as Feudal Elective for 1500 renown. Then you can vote the heir you want and in my case the vassals just usually follow who you vote.

Additional intrique tip: abduct or capture childless female heirs, force recruit, demand conversion, seduce and/or make them your concubine until they have your babies. Now murder their daddy and once the child has grown up, murder it's mother as well and voilà; you've put an heir on the throne.
Because the mother is of your religion and your lover, there's a big chance you can vasselize them early on, usually after you worked on the cultural a bit.
And as you probably know, you can't make a ruler your concubine. But if they are already your concubine, they will stay in that position, even if they inherit a kingdom. Which is great, because it means you don't have to worry about them marrying and making new babies that belong to their own house.
This game has given me a new understanding as why in medieval times men were both very defensive about, and oppressive towards their daughters. They might fuck up your whole bloodline and end up putting another family on the throne! Whether through their own misconduct, or that of others. A daughter was a potential risk to your family's legacy and the stability of the realm. That's the real power of having babies. At least in hereditary monarchies it was.

Put a military camp in every holding you have in every county. Castle city and temple grounds should all have one. Make your army all archers and this will cheese the combat. Then people will declare war because your troop numbers are equal, but your archer Chad's will disintegrate army's twice their size. If anyone starts a faction just try to imprison one of them, this starts a war. Disintegrate thier army's imprison and execute all of them. This makes everyone terrified of you, the game becomes way easier. Nobody messes with you. I typically execute several thousand people in a playthrough.

The whole marrying your family to an heir is nice, unless the culture and religion of everyone around you is different, that makes it take whole generation extra to work cuz you have to get a strong hook to get the heir and convert their religion and culture then you have to get the hair on the throne and get another hook on him to get him ot agree to a matrilineal marriage and it would work with a weak hook if he is your friend.
