Do We Have A Tendency To Exaggerate Comparisons Between Pakistan & Bangladesh? | Barkha Dutt

A 14-member interim government in Bangladesh, under the leadership of Noble Laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on Thursday, August 7, three days after Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister and left the the country after mass protests.
Is a post-Hasina dispensation likely to be more illiberal hinged with religious fervour? Is there a tendency to exaggerate the comparisons between Pakistan & Bangladesh? Does the Jamaat wield any significant influence?
This, and a lot more, as Barkha Dut speaks to Salil Tripathi & Sadanand Dhume.

In simple words, Bangladesh has terrible corruption, price rise-inflation, financial mis-apprpriation, poor health management. The poor are extremly poor and there are extremely rich people, finally extreme authoritarian administration. So, someone started a flame and it turned into a big fire which consumed the entire Govt. India's interests are to be seen separately. We have to do what we have to do, without hurting individual Bangladeshis. This is a multipolar world, we should stay aware of that.

Some of the panelists seem to live in their own world!
I have been to that country on more than one occasion and found that a good section of the population never liked their founding father, instead resented the creation of the country!
They feel they were better off with Pakistan (& the muslim first identity).
And, mind you that section of the population is not small or largely illiterate, no!
It is that section of the population (and political spectrum) who got politically marginalised over the years of Hasina’s rule.
ably supported by external forces like Pakistan (Pakistan had a ideological ready base with that section of the population ) , USA, China (overtly or covertly ), and the icing on the cake was “the student unrest against reservation “ turned the tide!
It is to be noted that tell tell signs of what’s coming was there for months, like the boycott India program (it was not published by the Indian media and social media however). I wonder what was our intelligence community doing ! 🤔

Hasina acted like there is no other Leader in Bangladeshi history except for her father. As an example you can take a look at the BDT paper notes. Now people are vomiting it out. You should look at all these events through the eyes of Bangladeshi people, not through Indian eyes. Mujibur Rahman was an opportunist leader, remained in the hope to the last minute before crackdown by Pak army, to become prime minister of Pakistan. It's true he was the darling of almost 95% people before independence, but after his return from Pak jail, he virtually became Shahinsah of Iran. He was busy placing his relatives and cronies in important and crucial positions and was unable to control his relatives and partymen from looting and plundering the country. He couldn't control famine that happened in the district of Rangpur, where 2-3 lakh died due to mismanagement and stealing of relief materials by his partymen. During his tyrannical rule, he abolished democracy and tried to establish one party rule. He killed 35-40 thousand of his opponents, mostly youths, using his infamous Rakhi Bahini. Further, you should remember 85% people of this land are muslim, and there is no place in Islam to put idols of someone, how famous or revered he may be, in public places to be worshipped. His daughter named all iconic places, including safari parks, important roads, buildings, educational institutions, and every landmark visible in Bangladesh, mostly in his or his family's name. As an example; there are two safari parks, both in his name. So the anger of people on his and his daughter's dictatorial rule, indiscriminate killing and disappearance of people, fraudulently her getting elected for two consecutive terms by utilising forces under her control, hurting the religious sentiment of people by erecting idols of him in public places etc. all lead the people in dismantling his idols and dishonouring him. Please read the history of Bangladesh carefully from it's inception and you will understand why this is happening now. People are fed up with these two family owned political parties, Awami League and BNP, and their opportunist cronies. There are no democratic processes inside these parties themselves or other smaller parties, except Jamaat-e-Islami, where leaders are chosen on the basis of family inheritance. Again, Jamaat-e-Islami, in their history, have always tried to raw their boat against the tide by taking stands always against the will of the people. Mujib's family think Awami League and Bangladesh are their parental properties. On the other hand, the family of Zia thinks BNP and Bangladesh are Khaleda Zia's marriage dowry and consequently inheritance of her children. Thanks.

Barkha .. I was born and lived in BD for 38 yrs before coming to EUROPE. I studied there in University, studied in India and working abroad. Mentality of majority Muslims very hostile to Indian culture specifically Hindu traditions. Even we Bangalis were secular like Panjabi. But that ended after 1965. Gradually hostility to Hindus increased significantly. They started changing dress code, indulged in very aggressive attitude to Hindu traditions in East Pakistan. After 1976 Jamat openly was in the politics and silently got hold of institutions dominating other anti Indian political parties. Now they are in a position to eatup anti Indian political fronts like BNP who is a one of the 2 main parties. Now what is going to happen in next election I guarantee that they will win 40% of seats with a coalition I believe they are working on with Hifazat , Islamic Okkyo Jot and few other Sunni Islamic fronts. Even BNP win 59% of constituency they will not dare to do anything against Jammats interest. The reason is Jammat has access and influence with in Military, student Institutions , finance sectors and they are guided by a similar model of activities like Muslim Brotherhood, Hiszbollah like ultra radical organisation. More to add they have open access to ISI of Pakistan .

Building those never increased respect for Mujib in the country and demolition of those did not give a good vibe for Bangladesh to the world either. However, the fact remains that Sheikh Hasina is the sole reason for her father's fall in 2024. Also, 99% of the statues were very ugly, poor in build quality, and not even close to how Mujib looked. They were just a mess and people also have had enough.

Instead of outright condemnation, South Asian nations should introspect on their treatment of minorities to determine if they truly uphold liberal values. India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, among others, must examine their policies and decision-making processes. Minority groups should have autonomy over their affairs, with reforms, if necessary, initiated and led by the communities themselves.
Many Bangladeshi citizens view the recent student protests as a revolutionary struggle against authoritarian rule. While this is understandable, it does not explain the attacks on Awami League supporters, including celebrities. What about the targeting of Bangladeshi Hindus and their temples? Despite the existence of Muslims who protect their Hindu neighbors, underlying communalism is evident within society. A people-centered democratic model is needed for the country.
To uphold the principles of secularism, a strong argument can be made for removing Islam as the state religion of Bangladesh. While some believe religious belief can strengthen secular credentials, others question the need for a state-imposed religious identity, especially one established by a dictator in the mid-1980s

We love exaggerated details We practice double standards all the time! Reason why fake narratives, innuendoes thrive abd those who practice it on social media earn millions. Difficult for them to accept that students of Bangladesh have pulled off a miracle. Respect them! Respect Bangladesh instead of churning conspiracy theories! The deaths of minorities is no doubt concerning and very unfortunate but do see the overall context of most of them being awami supporters at the receiving end of the angst against hasina

What is going to happen to 13 million Hindus in Bangladesh is different from what is going to happen to 10000 hindu Indians in Bangladesh. It is former issue that is relevant. the 10000 indian nationals can return home…So on the main question, it is probably going to be worse for bangladeshi Hindus now than it was for them in Hasinas regime…..sadly that much is likely…… but the Bangladeshi response for this concern by India will be : it will still not be as bad as it has been for Indian muslims in India in the last decade or so, because Bangladesh is a more syncretic society than India and bangladeshi hindus are culturally all bengali^. The logic is unfortunate but probably roughly right.

Except that he is confused. He wants India to encourage her not to ask for a stay… yet he wants everyone to say the future BD regime will be worse than Hasinas…. moreover his understanding of economies is not so strong
