  • NAMI Ask the Expert Webinar welcomes Dr. Tom Insel, former Director of NIMH and co-founder of Mindstrong Health, whose work in psychiatry and neuroscience has made him a national leader in mental health research, policy and technology.
    -
In his presentation, Dr. Insel will share what he has learned on his journey overseeing research on mental health and observing how current systems have failed people with serious mental illness - including his finding that while the problem is medical, the solutions are social, environmental, and political. NAMI Metro South Suburban's Chapter in Forest Park, IL has a Drop-In-Center, which is like a clubhouse, and it was such an amazing place to volunteer at, participate in, and is exactly what we need more of. They held groups, were run by an amazing adminstrator, offered job training classes, group, art therapy and so much more!

Yeah, Med School IS hard to get into. (I read a book about it when I was trying to go to school...). So is RN school (which I was accepted into twice...). Hell, being a Certified Nursing Assistant was difficult enough to achieve with my diagnoses. That was in 2009. I attended a NAMI's Family-To-Family Class in Orland Park, Illinois about six or seven years ago. One thing they taught me was to learn how to, "COPE WITH SHATTERED DREAMS". My shattered dream is being 32 years old, mentally ill and not being able to find gainful employment in Crown Point, Indiana, 46307. I am not surprised at all to hear that suicides, incarceration rates, substance abuse and mental health crises are occurring. Thank you for writing this book, if I ever get a job, I'll be sure to order one!

Halfway through the book - great info. I wish it wasn’t peppered with political jabs. Kind of makes it hard to have bipartisan support for the good ideas. I am a Republican state legislator who is working very hard on this issue - leading the way in the interim with my colleague on the opposite political spectrum. The partisanship is really part of the problem.

I have to add that homelessness is largely due to an inability to pay the horrible increases in rent that the elite are exacting. My son has schizoeffective disorder as his father does. If it wasn't for me, my son would be homeless.

Mr. Insel's introduction slide has a misspelling. The correction should be "SiteNews" instead of "SightNews".
