Deering Banjo Company Thanks so much!!! Yes, it does sound great... thanks for making such fine instruments! I love the sound this instrument has... so many lovely harmonic overtones, you'd think it had a bell bronze tone ring! I'm glad you like the song... not the average 'banjo tune'... which is why I like writing things like this :-) Buddy ( )====:::
BuddyGtr If I may ask, what do you use for strings? Also, as far as head tension, do you do the standard G on the B6? Thanks. Amazing work and beautiful sound. I have one too and I'm experimenting with different things.
Nolan Milnes Hello Nolan, thanks for the compliments and for your questions! ANSWER-1-Strings: I use GHS strings on all of my instruments (I have for over 12 years now), and typically use Pure Nickel wound strings. Currently, I am also experimenting with different custom sets, but the closest to what I like the most, and what I use on a day-to-day basis on both my Banjos and my Electric (and the easiest for you to order) would be the Eric Johnson Signature 'Nickel Rockers' set model# 'R+EJM' (.011/.014/.019/.N28/.N40/.N52). These are GREAT! ANSWER-2-Head Tension: I typically start off with standard G tension, but before I get there, I test out the instrument at a lower setting (maybe a 1/2 step lower) and what I look for is the resonance and response percussively across the head (also I take into consideration the specific tone of the instrument in question--some are more base-centric, others are more treble-centric). If you see my video of 'The Disco King': czcams.com/video/7-AG7acf0E0/video.html I use a custom 'dynamically tuned head'. In other words, the upper part of the head (where I hit the head with my thumb) is tuned a bit low (just slightly, for a lower bass frequency response), and the lower part of the head where I get the 'snare effect' is tuned a bit high to get that more of a treble focused response. I do NOT do extremes!! just slight alterations as I am tuning up the head (to be generally close to G) on my banjos to get this effect. this also solves any issues with overpowering sympathetic tones since I am not tuning the whole head to resonate equally. Maybe someone else calls it something else, but I refer to it as being a 'dynamically tuned head'. I hope this helps you out, please let me know how it goes for you and happy picking!
BuddyGtr wow thank you! I can't wait for the next 12 years of my own to implement these things! Seriously, thank you for the detailed response. Above and beyond and much appreciated. 👌🏼
