    looks like a good day. Used to run C/L trips over a weekend depending which boat we were using. Left from Appalach or PCB, spent Friday night traveling, shooting on Saturday, spent the night again and hit the Mica on the way in for a few more dives. That was back in the '80s before all the storms tore the Mica up. Got my first 17+ hog fish and first 80+ AJ on the northeast corner of the M/Gs. Seems like the fish were a little bigger back then. LOL Sure do miss that -- down in FLL now and there is garbage down here.

    • @danmacmahon3973
      @danmacmahon3973  Před 4 lety +1

      SR, I usually try to "set up" the shot by encouraging the fish to go where I want it to go. You can't do it all the time but when you can, it's a big help. When free shafting, you want to try and stone the fish as often as possible, or at least hurt it bad enough to close with or double tap it. The best shot is from slightly behind and off to the side around 45 degrees or so. Driving the spear through the head and out the other side. Avoid straight through shots when free shafting especially with a lot of power. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan

      RB, I ran the Yamaha 350's for 5 years and only had one issue with one of them which Yamaha covered 100% under warranty. They were great motors and I enjoyed them. The Suzukis are on a whole 'nother level. Probably 15% better all around economy and night/day difference in seas. I ran in 80nm the other night into a 20K head wind with heavy rain, screaming gust, etc.etc., boat ran 20K burning 18GPH. Yammies would have done it but in that scenario with single prop slipping , have burned 30 gph easy. Remember it's a 44' dive boat with 38 tanks and lots of ice/fish. I've only owned them for 10 moths so can't speak for reliability yet, but I've owned a lot of suzukis before and they were all great engines. So far, these are the most impressive piece of outboard engineering for offshore boats I've seen. Hard to get the grin off my face while running them! Best, Dan

    How deep was this dive? And what city you guys leave from? On the Suzuki try to change the impeller often otherwise the driveshaft gets stuck in the powerhead and it’s really hard to separate, use some grease on the shaft and always replace the anoids inside the caps in the powerhead I think there is like 4 or 6 of them, 2 or 3 on each side otherwise corrosion will occur inside the powerhead usually on the port side and it’s hard too see until it’s too late

The gun makes a big difference as well, once you find a gun you like and is suitable for what you want to do, get it set up right and then don't change things. Use the same size bands and the same spears. If you're always changing stuff around, it'll really be hard to achieve the level of accuracy you want. Best, Dan
