CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After killing his seatmate, Striker (Robert Hays) is invited into the cockpit to take over the plane.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This spoof of the Airport series of disaster movies relies on ridiculous sight gags, groan-inducing dialogue, and deadpan acting -- a comedy style that would be imitated for the next 20 years. Airplane! pulls out all the clichés as alcoholic pilot Ted Striker (Robert Hays), who's developed a fear of flying due to wartime trauma, boards a jumbo jet in an attempt to woo back his stewardess girlfriend (Julie Hagerty). Food poisoning decimates the passengers and crew, leaving it up to Striker to land the plane, with the help of a glue-sniffing air traffic controller (Lloyd Bridges) and Striker's vengeful former captain (Robert Stack), who must both talk him down. Along the way, we meet a clutch of stock disaster movie passengers like the guitar-strumming nun, a sick little girl, a frightened old lady, and two African-American travelers whose "jive" has to be subtitled. Leslie Nielsen portrays the plane's doctor, launching a new phase of the actor's career that carried him through the next two decades in several similarly comedic roles. The trio of directors Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker, and David Zucker responsible for the film would eventually go on to solo careers, but not before making Top Secret! and Ruthless People.

I work with someone named Shirley and have been trying to months to work this into a conversation without making it seemed forced... hopefully it happens soon.
Good luck my friend XD
Pratik Hazari Its not that hard...... just ask her one day her opinion on something... "So what do you think of the current situation in Pakistan"
- "How would you cook a perfect boiled egg?"'''
That's called forcing it.
Pratik Hazari Surely you cant be serious?
SHRUDE He is serious. And don't call him Shirley. He hates that...
"Cockpit! What is it!"
"Oh it's a little room where the pilot sits. That's not important right now" Amazing XD
A hospital? What is it?!!
Its a big building with patients
Surely you can't be serious!
jon122569 I am serious and don’t call me Shirley.
"How soon can you land" "I can't tell" "You can tell me I'm a doctor." "I mean I don't know" "Can't you guess." "Not for another two hours" "You can't guess for two hours"
It's an entirely different kind of flying... all together...

Can you explain it please sir
Lol I just got that too
Andres Reyes He says "all together" afterwards. So they say it all together.

"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley." Only Leslie Nielsen could say this while keeping a straight face. What a classic!
I wondered how many takes did the scene get by delivering a straight face 🤣 i cant even stop smiling!
Impeccable performance altogether
@@Izabelle835 This sort of thing was his bread and butter. All of the ZAZ comedies relied on people reading the lines straight no matter how ridiculous. Leslie Nielsen was the best of the bunch and applied this to other work as well.

The plane is a jet, but the sound is of a propeller plane. LOL
I never noticed that. Thank you. Another small bit. I try to notice one new thing ever time I watch
That's the joke
I can never hear it the same again.
It makes sense you know. It's from the turbofan
Am I the only one who laughs out loud during the exterior shots of the plane?
It's insane that "Don't Call me Shirley" still makes me laugh the 500th time I've seen it. It is just one of those lines that will be funny forever.
It’s just so stupid lol. Like, why would he misinterpret it that way? 😂🤣😂
Eh it was kinda funny the first time i heard it but gets old really quick.. its no where as bad as the creepy joke the pilot says to the little kid

"Request vector, Victor"
"Roger, Roger"
"Do we have clearance, Clarence?
Star Wars has affected my brain to the point I completely glossed over the Roger Roger
"Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?"
Kareem, ha. He is an underrated actor.

EVERY JOKE in this scene works perfectly. This is a masterpiece for comedy.
I doubt if it could be made today. WOKE America has no sense of humor.
The part with the never ending control panels and buttons as the music intensifies. Brilliant

According to director commentaries, they did not do multiple takes. The budget and schedule for the film were so tight, everyone strived to get it right the first time. Rehearse, film, move on.
Most of the actors in this movie are actually people that act in serious movies. Leslie Nielsen was in multiple romance movies before this. They did this because those kinds of actors weren’t going to try to say things in a comedic way.
"There's been a little problem in the cockpit"

Leslie Neilson: *decays*
I first watched this movie when I was 14, it was a particularly cold December and I was dead ill at the time. We ( my family and myself) got up to watch this all together, and it was the fondest memory I ever had. We were all laughing and crying and I can honestly say itactually made me feel better. A truly legendary comedy that will never be lost to time.
I first saw it in a double bill with The Life of Brian. That was quite an experience.
"Surely you can't be serious?" ... "I am serious and don't call me Shirley"
Great line. So funny.
I've always have had enormous respect for people who make me laugh. I heard that when I was a wee boy. I was only 7 years old when I watched that movie and thought I was very clever getting that joke and explaining it to my mum. (who didn't get it right away)
A joke can never be as good as it is if you have to explain it. But my lovely wee mum eventually got it and laughed till I thought she'd choke.
I don't really know If Leslie Neilson wrote that joke...Or ad-libbed or whatever and I've never cared to find out. His comedic and dry delivery was spot on. I still laugh when I watch it.
Hoooo boy, wouldn't be able to get away with having a man with a turban having a gas can on a plane these days.

I never realized the brilliance @ 0:57 , look how Leslie Nielsen enters the frame from the bottom. LOL, that is some fantastic filmmaking. God this movie is awesome, it's about time for another yearly watch!
I never saw that until a few minutes ago. I saw this in a theatre in Montreal when it came out, I own it, I have watched it over and over again, and I have watched endless clips, and yet 40+ years I still see something new. I love this movie.
What's the joke here? Is it connected to the blow-up doll pilot flying the plane?
I don’t see how his standing up there is a joke - that would have been the seat for the navigator on a jet of that size before computer navigation was widely available. So he could have been sitting there while he was waiting and stood up when striker came in.
The way the controls never end as the camera goes across it
That line is the best line in the movie.
Perhaps the greatest line in cinema history!

I like the usage of 'That's not important now' by various characters in the film each time they're explaining something.
Also, each time Striker goes on a tangent with a passenger, they always try to kill themselves to escape the never-ending talking....lmao
In the case of the Punjabi dude, I like how the huge explosion only affects him and no one else in the plane.

"Surely you can't be serious, I am serious and don't call me Shirley" 😂😂😂😂😂
The running joke of the jet airliner making the sound of a prop plane has always tickled me so much.
The studio wouldn't let them use a prop plane, so they used a jet and dubbed in prop plane audio. Just another layer of funny in a great movie.
Reminds me of about the first ten seasons of Hells Kitchen, when Ramsay tells the winning contestants of a particular challenge, that they’ll be taking their “own private jet” to such and such a destination. Next shot, cue said contestants boarding a propeller plane. I think it took about ten to twelve seasons for someone in production to finally figure out what a jet was.
