  • Pentax just recently released a ton of new info about their new film camera, the Pentax 17, a half frame camera donning a 25mm f/3.5 lens, and many both automatic and manual features. Because it is a half frame camera, you're effectively doubling your frames, and saving you money in the long wrong. While many will look at this as a huge pro or con for the camera, it's certainly aimed more toward a newer film photographer, something looking to get into the hobby. I think the Pentax 17 could also be a great sidekick to a main camera, being a reliable point and shoot, but for nearly $500, comes in at a decently steep price point. What do you think about the Pentax 17? Will you be picking it up?

    Just ordered one for my wife. Being able to shoot 72 photos is great for a beginner. It will allow her to easily shoot with me so that is a plus.

    I totally agree it’s for a younger generation of photographers who are getting into film and want a new camera with those vintage manual features. It’s a camera they can grow with. I also agree that a price tag of $500 is pretty steep for college age photographers with limited funds. Hell it's steep for me!

      Yeah, I don’t really understand the pricing on this. I can only imagine they invested so much developing this that they’re trying to recoup the costs.

      What other new film cameras are there our there? At better value?

    • @maniktakesphotos
      @maniktakesphotos Před 16 dny

      The Pentax 17 is ten times the price of the H35, so many would consider that much better value. Guess it’s up to the consumer whether the 17 creates images that justify that gulf in price.

    • @shred3005
      @shred3005 Před 16 dny +1

      @@maniktakesphotos the obvious issue with the H35 besides being toy like cheap, is it’s fixed shutter, aperture, focus and no way to control exposure. Should that make it 1/5th, 1/10th, 1/20th the price of the Pentax 17? I don’t know but it’s so crippled us can’t be used in a variety of the situations that 17 can. The H35 is limited in the extreme. On the other hand the Pentax 17 reportedly has a sharp lens, good build qualities and the same coatings as the latest DSLR lenses and the images I’ve seen are generally very good so it can considered a seriously fun little film camera that’s quite flexible

    • @maniktakesphotos
      @maniktakesphotos Před 16 dny +1

      I agree with you! But I think the issue is in the marketing. They’re not marketing it to you, me or the others that love this pastime already. It’s being marketing to entry level shooters who might not quite understand the benefits and thus, not place the same value on the extra features.
      I won’t be getting the 17, but I hope it does well and that Pentax produces the planned SLR that is to follow. I also hope it encourages other companies to jump back into the film game because I would love to see new innovation and competition.

    I know this is hard to believe but maybe this is pitched at people who haven’t shot film and are interested. So half frame and auto focus etc actually aren’t the issue they seem to you.

  • @KNURKonesur

    I saw some unboxing videos without talking about the pricing, thought SURELY it's a $99 item, maybe $149... maybe even $199 at a push would be justifiable... but $499 is just ridiculous and insulting. You can get a Contax G1 for that, a Leica IIIa with a lens or basically ANY 135 format Contax, with a handful of lenses, or some classic rangefinders/slrs + a full backpack of film...

      10/10 for putting a project together, for being willing to keep analogue current and breathing, however, 2/10 for a less than thrilling setup, slow lens and excessive price.

      @@42crazyguy This is the bit that I wish more people would get. And also why there's no way a new film camera could be aimed at those of us already looking, since the same people would be complaining about a 1.5k full featured camera.

    OMG! I got a copy of it and just trashed this camera in my review. It does not compare to the 1988 made yashica samurai X4.0 half frame 35mm SLR point & Shoot! More bang for your buck! So glad new film cams are being made but that's my 2 cents. Sorry you didn't get one, NOT FAIR. SUBBED!

  • @johnnyc.5979
    @johnnyc.5979 Před 17 dny +9

    Great design, but I would never buy this. Too many better older cameras from the 50's, 60's and 70's that shoot sharper images with amazing glass lenses. The Pentax Spotmatic and Pentax K1000 come to mind. Even the lowly Minolta Freedom III (point and shoot) would outperform this overpriced camera. Not sure what Pentax is doing, but it was and is a stupid decision. I only see the hipsters buying this.

    • @mountain___john
      @mountain___john Před 16 dny +2

      Completely agree with you. I think this is an attempt to compel to the younger and more hipster crowd (speaking as a gen-z'er myself...), seems like a total gimmick. Either buy one of these types of cameras (half-frame, disposable/point&shoot) for way cheaper, or invest those 500$ in a better camera overall...

    • @elk3407
      @elk3407 Před 16 dny +6

      It's not over priced though? If you look at the launch prices of many film cameras and then adjust for inflation they cost far more than this.
      The K1000, when adjusted for inflation, launched at a price of $1,652.56.
