Actual earnings assuming Ludwig made 500k already this year:

After Twitch: $304,260 (This assumes all money went through twitch which I don't think is true?)
After Mods deduction: $234,260
After Charity deduction: $150,260
After other expenses deduction: $120,290
After state tax 12.3%: $105,494
After federal tax 37%: $66,461

Ludwig's overall point of 'it isn't like I am taking away 500k' is still worth pointing out. I just wanted to try the math.
Reasons: You should be deducting charity and mod payments before taxes. Both would constitute deductions, reducing your taxed revenue. I think he also did the federal and state taxes combined rather than separately. It should be done seperately which would reduce the actual tax amount. He also did both state and federal taxes as if all money is taxed at the highest bracket rate rather than at the % of each bracket but, as commenters below have pointed out, Ludwig has likely already made 500k this year so this money would all be taxed in the highest bracket. Assuming Ludwig already made 500k this year, it would all be taxed at 12.3% then 37%. This is very different from 49.3%. To use an example with 10% and 30%. 10-10% is 9. 9 - 30% is 6.3. This would be different from 10-40% which would be 6.

Regarding the progressive rate, he would already earn enough outside of this subathon over the year to be in the top tax bracket. So its fair for him to consider the money earned here as taxed at the highest rate.
Marginal rate doesn’t matter because he would presumably be in the top tax bracket despite the subathon. I cut him explaining that because I thought it was obvious.

Being in the top tax bracket does not change that your income is taxed in each bracket. People commonly do not understand how progressive tax systems work. To put it simply, comparing a person who made a trillion dollars and another person 10k, both of you will pay the same tax on your first 10k. At no point does earning more money cause your previously earned money to be taxed more.

Honestly, if he makes 3k or 30k he deserves every penny. He could have easily not given shit to the mods, he could have easily backed out of his charity commitment; but he stayed true and cared more about the viewers and mods that help make his dream of streaming for living come true, than about a one time payment. Really makes me happy for the guy, even though I haven’t subbed because I’m a broke college student.

My unpopular opinion is that Ludwig doesn't deserve every penny. I personally have not spent any money on this joke, but to a reasonable extent I see the humour. The majority of people are essentially paying him money during this subathon so that he has to suffer a little bit by being forced to continuously stream for a long period. In reward for this he has received an extremely large sum of money and attention, which despite taxes and nobly choosing to pay moderators (which to an extent helps himself by providing more motivated moderators), will still end up making him far more than $30,000 no question. He is being more than adequately compensated.
Despite this he changed the sub time change down from 20 seconds, he started banning over 100 gifted subs, he left for a while to do a birthday dinner for one of his room mates, and now most outrageously is actually leaving to go visit his girlfriend's parents. All of these things undermine what people are paying him to do, and what people have previously paid (because they did not expect future subs to be restricted to less time and caps, not to mention just leaving). I have nothing against doing things for yourself and others, but then don't start an "uncapped" subathon.
Bottom line if you say you are going to do something and you are getting well compensated for it, you should do it, and it's really lame in my opinion that he isn't. Maybe I just don't get it, but it really makes me not want to watch the stream and if I subbed before I would have been mad about it, and I'm surprised people don't seem to be.

Since capping the gifted amount, the timer has consistently been decreasing. Had he not capped it, I seriously think he would’ve been streaming through April
I think that is more correlation than causation. I believe that the gifted subs over the cap when the cap was put in place only accounted for at most a day of time.

Honestly, I usually only get to watch lud's stream a bit in the afternoon and in the evening. Due to timezone stuff, those are the times when he's asleep.
