I loved the Chile encounter, just shows how President Bush was very aware of his surroundings and protocols in place for each trip!

One of my favorite stories about the Secret Service is that when President Carter held the office his son Chip (I believe) loved to go horseback riding. He would always carry a gun when he did.
He loved to find a way to ditch he "team" and once out of sight, he would discharge the gun and lay on the ground next to his horse just to hear the reactions of his Secret Service agents.
Many of them got to know that he would do this but anyone new to the team wouldn't know and the rest would hide the "secret" just to see the new person's reaction.

I was privileged to meet GHWB at
Bass Pro shops in Springfield MO. I tied a fly out of his hair. At the time you could get your hair cut at the barber shop have the trimmings sent the the White River Fly Shop where I would tie a fly from the hair from your head!. The fly then gets mounted in a frame by the (then) art department. The end product is a classic fly in nice frame. I sent a lot of fly fishing gear to Kennebunkport.

I have nothing but respect for those men and women that serve with the secret service, I assigned to Fairchild AFB, the 92d Security Police Squadron when I was called into my commander's office, I was given three different missions, first was securing the SR-71 blackbird when it came to the base, a very highly classified aircraft, then going through the ash clouds after Mt. St Helens erupted, a couple weeks later securing the air control tower as Air Force One came in to land, then that agent taking me to the reception line while I still had both of my firearms on me. For the tower he gave me one order, if any one other than me comes to the door, shoot first, ask questions later. I shook President Jimmy Carter's hand while still armed to the teeth. Because we had a nuclear mission we were used to shoot first order!!! Other than Jesus, my family these things I was picked to do are at the top 3. The agents told us we were heroes and treated us as such, we were waiting for them to give any order and we would be on the way up before he finished the order!!! Really professional and nice people!!

In a different interview a retired agent said when that happens they call it "going to a higher power" they told the first lady the security situation she convinced the president not to go where he wanted and while he didn't want to listen to the agents he listened to his wife he didn't like being told on but he complied then ... the agent didn't say what president it was but I think he said it happened twice
