Ah yes. This infamous game. It turns out a lot of behind the scenes problems caused this game to be very poor quality and at one point almost completely unfinished. I do respect the level of detail put into the game, how faithful it was to the movie, the Universal Studio music, the atmosphere, and how it made us feel like we were Rick or Imhotep from the films. I reached out to some former designers from Blitz Games studios and they really had a lot to say about it.
-The game was announced after Mid 2000. They were given an early draft script from Universal Pictures and some production artwork directly from the artists.
-The Blitz Games team were fans of the original film and were excited to work on the sequel. They wanted to make a very good game and played a LOT of GoldenEye 007 so they knew the expectations they wanted.
-They were unsure how they wanted to make the game at first and ultimately went for a Tomb Raider style game. They were indecisive about how the game should be which would be a problem during development.
-Whilst they got permission to use the likenesses of the Mummy cast from Universal Studios, the cast were very busy during the films production and sadly couldn't provide their voices to the game. Hence why we got some of the gaming industrys greatest voice talent like Jennifer Hale, Michael Gough and James Horan as soundalikes instead. The results speak for themselves.
-The usage of the text screens with Ardeths voiceover to express the story, along with the still images for the endings had to be used a compromise as there would have been legal and production problems with using footage from the film and again the film was still being made at the time. They did agree it hurt the game.
-There was no mouth movement due to time constraints hence why the cutscenes and their animations look goofy. To be honest, they were affected by this too.
-Steven Sommers was never told about the game.
-There was TONS of executive meddling from Universal and this combined with the vision and direction of the game not being finalised, staff feeling disgruntled along with the game nearing its release date almost ruined it completely. Some of the team actually stayed overnight just to get the game as polished as possible.
-It was a very low budget game. A lot of corners were cut and it shows.
-They enjoyed working on the game but they knew it could have been better.
I really liked this game as a kid ane replaying it I still do. I see _why_ it gets the hate, but I think it's overhated.

I've had this game for a long time and it feels more polished than some of the games nowadays. It is definetely not the worst game I've played on ps2 and it has an excellent soundtrack.

I'll never forget Game Revolution's review of this game back in the day. They referred to Brendan Frasier's character as a "disheveled adventurer and resident goober, with all of the convincing ruggedness of a half-melted bowl of vanilla ice cream," and Imhotep as an "albinistic pseudo-Egyptian, reminiscent of a petulant Mr. Clean with occasional eczema flair-ups."

1:19 "The Mummy Returns" being considered a 48/100 film shows how spoiled for great movies we were back in 2001. Some ifffy CGI aside (which is totally fixable) it takes a runny dump from a great height on most action-adventure films released since. The likeability of the leads, the amusing script, the way its purpose is to entertain not lecture - it's solid gold by 2023 standards.

I played it as a kid and tbh I have good memories of it. Getting to choose between hero and villain for me seemed pretty neat, and using imhotep to eat souls and regenerate was fun... i think the British museum was the highlight of his gameplay because of all the minions you could resurrect. It was just chaos in the museum where the guards would try to box ancient mummified warriors and it had some comedic value too... its a shame that was the only part of the game you could do that, and they put it right at the beginning so the rest of the levels felt like a downgrade
As a child, I beat both of the campaigns for this game. Lemme tell you, it wasn't easy. But once you are able to read this Map, there is no longer such a thing as a map too hard to read in gaming anymore. lol

I have no idea how a brit has so much trouble with that map - it's the same map as in Crystal Maze pretty much, or the original Devil May Cry, a 3d render that has the rooms being colour coded. I beat Rick's story (never got around to Imhoteps) and didn't have that much trouble with it. That was recent too.

I honestly loved this game as a kid, a friend of mine had it and I loved playing as Imhotep! I never cared for Rick’s story. I just liked soul sucking and reviving my mummy pals. Especially the soul sucking! I don’t really remember liking anything else. Now I know why

Idk why people hate the mummy games and movies so much, to me I grew up watching and playing the mummy, as a kid it was just as scary as it was fun, truly a franchise I absolutely love. The mummy 1 had such beautiful orchestral music which one of the finest creations of Goldsmith. Adaptation of the music in the game as well made it fun and enjoyable, it’s sad to see how people think about it…

I just found u guys recently and have been binging. You made that Tom Cruise Mummy joke in the beginning, but have you played the game that got released along with it, The Mummy Demastered? It's actually a 2D Metroidvania, more like a Contravania, as you have shooting weapons and controls like Contra.
It's really good, sometimes expensive(there was a small Best Buy retail release along with a "limited" website, but it's so short of a game. I've played so many 2D platformersnin my life, and this game spun my head I beat it so quickly. But I had fun doing it.
Pls play Tomb of the dragon emperor. I played it as a kid and i remember it not being that bad, but that may be just my childhood memory.

@@MindPulp Yep also the tip you guys should think to do is save the game when you're stuck at a spot that way you can just load the game instead of replaying the entire area and make yourselves frustrated that way you can easily complete the game faster and it's more variable that way for you plus the game is better for it The fact that it lets you save whenever you want
