- Finding perennials that thrive in Southern gardens can sometimes be challenging due to our high humidity and temperatures both during the day and the night. Today I am sharing with you 15 perennials that have proven themselves to be tough enough to handle whatever our crazy weather throws at them. Grab a cup of coffee and your gardening journal because I know you will discover a few plants that you will want to add to your garden!

Love these southern focused plant videos due to our heat and humidity. Easy peasy! đ
Iâve got to take care of my people đ
Just a heads up for us southern folks and daylilies. Keep a supply of neem oil as you will encounter leaf rust, which is a special kind of irritation that can make a beautiful plant downright ugly...
YES! This is what I need as a fairly new gardener (2years) in a zone 9a!!!!!!!
Jenny, I canât say thank you enough. For the last week I have been searching for this type of video. Texas 9b is a special kind of heat as someone else stated (the devil gets a heat stroke). We need heat tolerant plants. Iâm transitioning from annuals to perennials so I donât have to work as hard. Iâll add several of your recommendations.
@MsRoRo I am also in zone 9b (New Orleans area) & we have the rain (sometime for weeks), humidity & heat. Some of what I have grown successfully are Vista Bubblegum, Sparkling Amethyst Verbena, Curcuma, Purple & Blue Poterweed Weed, Zinas, Angelonia, Baptisia, Coreopsis, Daylilies, Amaryllis, Agapanthus, & Duranta,
@@robintranchina6588 this is a good list. Iâm going to add baptisea pink lemonade, salvia, hibiscus and lemon jade sedum. I want to add more perennials so I donât have to continue to buy annuals to the larger beds. Iâll also add some of your suggestions to my pots. This is not helping my budget. Spring hasnât come yet but itâs already blown out the water.đ
I am in the Houston gulf coastside too. It is difficult, but have great success with Salvia and coleous for color!
I couldnât agree more. Iâm in Orlando 9b and itâs a challenge keeping things alive in the summer. I always wished we had a Laura from Garden Answer who gardened in a 9b until I found Jenny.
@@ivytippit6181 me too, The Woodlandâs for me. Last summer was a killer on the heat.
Finally perennials for southern sun and heat! Can't wait to find these.
Yes!!!!! Awesome video. Fits me for my zone, Texas hell heat, where the devil gets a heat stroke
Love that analogy đđđ
This had me HOLLERING. itâs so true, Iâm in Texas 9b (gulf coast). I love the analogy.
Jenny, love when you do a profile on a plant, like the screenshot with information of each plant with pictures. This help gardeners so much when making plans for new plants. Thanks for the details!!
Youâre so welcome!
LOVE this! I have been wishing someone would put out a video geared more for the south. Hope to see more like this in the future.
I just love how you did the photo with all the info on it. Great for screenshot. Thank you!
Much love â€â€ StL Missouri 6a
I am drooling lol. Thanks so much for such a complete list. I am in zone 9 so I will try to pick those appropriate for my area.
Thanks Jenny! My concern is always the hot sun and humidity we get in 7B and knowing which plants can take the heat is valuable! Can't wait until Spring.........
So many ideas since I'm also in zone 7b in east TN. The critter resistant plants are what I need. We have many wild rabbits that eat my tender shoots!
đ±A gloomy, cold day here in southeast Michigan so I was happy to see you displaying the beautiful colors of springtime. Creekside visit is on my bucket list for sure! Thank you so much đȘŽđ
So glad it brought a little sunshine to your morning!
Thanks for putting the information on the screen it makes it so easy to screen shot and save.
Thank you Jenny for providing a list of wonderful perennials to add to my gardens!
Love this list - need more southern specific videos - zone 7B here in SC đđŒ
Oh Jenny, this made my spring fever skyrocket. I want to add more than half of these for my front garden this year! We also garden in 7b in NE Atlanta area. Iâm hoping to come to Creekside early this spring to be able to see in person this great family owned Christian based nursery!
We look forward to seeing you!
I wish you shipped. This was absolutely perfect! Iâm near Richmond, VA, and I would love so many of these plants. This is the best video Iâve watched listing perennials that would all do well in my gardens.
Thank you. I have several of these plants in my garden. Very little care needed.
Jenny, you by far are the best at providing information. Most people just post their zone information. You post the full zone information.
Thank you! I plan on ordering several of the plants you mentioned for zone 9.
So glad you found it helpful â„ïž
Great presentation and plants! Please continue to do videos like this. Thank you from TX zone 8A
My garden (zone 8, coastal NC) is too small and is already jammed full. But some underperforming perennials can come out to make room for these new varieties. Thanks for the recommendations, great descriptions and care needs.
Thanks for giving such wonderful information about plants that include our(5b) zone! Such a beautiful group of flowers, too!
Our pleasure!
I love them all!
Love your channel, and I especially loved this segment on heat and humidity resistant perennials for the south. Could you also do annuals that thrive in the south. Thank you for all the wonderful information and experience that you and your husband share with us all, much appreciated. Leslie Twiss
Absolutely!
This came at a perfect time! I just moved from the dry west desert to the north border of Alabama/Georgia. The previous owners planted gorgeous bright pink roses with deep purple foliage in the front yard but we've been warned of the deer. I plan to move these to the backyard which is fenced in but I really wanted a similar colored plant to replace them in the front. The hibiscus you mentioned sounds perfect! There are quite a few other plants I screenshot as well for future reference.
Loved this video so much. The style and how you presented this was perfect for me. Xoxo
Hello đ dear, how are you doing?
What a wonderful list of recommendations!! I want to try them all! Definitely going to add the AmsoniaâŠlove the texture and fall color of those leaves. Thanks Jenny!
So glad you found it helpful!
Stunning collection Jenny xx I've written quite a few of these down and luckily I have the others and my garden would certainly be lost without them xx
Good morning! Lots of beautiful plants to see!
Morning Jenny! Iâd like to give some of these a try in my zone 10b. I have luck with Day lily, but weâll stretch a bit this year.
Everything in the greenhouse is looking lovely! đȘŽ
Gracias por compartir tus videos
Great format to suggest plants!!! This was the most helpful of all!!!
Oh my. I had to watch this twice. Thank you so much for this video! I am zone 9 so some may not work here but I have been known to push đ the zone limit. So many possibilities!!
So many beauties!
You've definitely given me some ideas. Guess my lawn space will have to be reduced.
love it!!! im dreaming of spring
Hi Jenny! Good Golly you picked some winnerâs to whoooo share with us! So gorgeous-They give me goosebumps.....:))
Just one lol!! I want them all!! I live in Alabama with similar temps as you so I wanted all of these!! I planted that grass last year and loved it!!
Speaking of Japanese Beatles please share how you deal with them!! As bad as I dislike using pesticides I succumb to it ever year because so many of my plants would be riddled! I worry about hurting pollinators but I still have some. I usually use seven dust pellets and they really work well but I just wanted your input on it!!
They get all over my roses, black eyed Susanâs, crape myrtles and hibiscus!! I quit growing rose of Sharon because of them!!
Makes me want them all!!!
Oh I am so ready to get out and garden!! Some beautiful plants I will need to get!! Thanks Jenny!! I love these types of videos!!đžđž
Thanks so much, Jenny! Great list and, got my screenshots!
Fantastic!
Jenny, love your videos. I am a Master Gardener, I love learning about all the new plants coming out and more about some of the standard p!ants. I do love the new solar lights you features on your video. I was thinking I would put the stair solar lights around my rose garden so when I walk thru at night the paths would be lighted. Thanks for all your lovely videos. Donna Speed

Oh, my!!! I canât wait to visit and pick up a few of these beauties!!!
This is a wonderful list. I deal with deer who havenât been told they donât like some of these plants. Mine have decided day lilies are an okay snackâŁïžđ„°
Oh my goodness!!! LOVE them! Just wish I was nearby and you could help me place them!
I love videos like this and I'm not a southern gardener but Zone 6a! Such good information, as are the IG posts that are similar. Thank you.

You are slowly wearing me down on those day lilies, I'm starting to feel like I really need a few in my yard!
đđđ
You won't be disappointed..stately when mixed with other perennials. rock solid and dependable. I had left some just lying near a flower bed..thought I planted all..they were still alive the next year and started growing on top of the ground..
Thank you Jenny!!! Great List!!! I live in California Zone 9b and canât wait to try and find some of these.
Happy Gardening đŒđ·
Thatâs great to hear!
Dang! I need to move up north! So many beautiful plants. I still enjoy learning about all of them even though I can't grow them in my zone 10b. Well... I never know where life will take me one day.

Jenny, thank you so much for this video! I loved how you gave time for screenshots! Thatâs very helpful.
I do have a question, what determines if a perennial can be in a pot?
Iâve seen many patio gardens with potted perennials and I would love to add some to my garden.
Thank you again for this video, it was so informative.
Donna
Hi Jenny!!!! Thank you so.much! I am so ready for planting and getting.out in the yard!!! I just planted a tall scented pulls this year so I am excited!!!!!! Hope you guys are all doing well! đ
Good day, Jennyđ€!
Thanks so much for that stellar presentation! I have a small garden and wanted to know what you thought about starting some of these perennials by planting seeds in the ground. I appreciate your very informative expertise! Blessings to you and the family.đș
Love the list! Jenny, what is next to you? Is that a catmint or did I miss your description of it? Your videos are so helpful, particularly because Iâm 7b also near Atlanta. Thank you!
Iâd love to know tooâŠI am in zone 7a high desert New Mexico. I planted 5 of the midnight masquerade back in early fallâŠThe leaves have stayed a nice dark purple to dark green even through several snow storms..
She didnât say but it is catmint
I am guessing it is Nepeta Cat's Pajamas.
@@kathleenberkheiser264 I agree;)
Howdy neighbor! I'm in Dawsonville
Thank you, Jenny!! I've made all kinds of notes on which perennials I will be adding to my gardens!!
You are so helpful! Wish I lived closer to actually come to your beautiful nursery!!

Great information. My list for the Spring is growing đ€©
Jenny, excellent well thought out plant list. For us Midwest gardens lots of Zone 4 choices. Great video.
Yes great information. Loved it so much. Thank you so very much for sharing this. Appreciated.đšđŠđšđŠđšđŠ
I am now planning on some of the beautiful trees đł and perennial flowers đș đž đ , I need soil erosion plants đȘŽ đ± for our front yard . The tree roots are showing. I also want to buy the blueberry đ« bushes in our back yard. Living in our gated neighborhood I know I can camouflage them in our back yard . Our backyard is surrounded by the lake I would like to plant birch trees near our lake I believe they would look beautiful. I loved todayâs video and all of the wonderful ideas you showed us today .
I meant to share, I am looking forward to purchasing a couple of the Birch trees you mentioned, some perineal flowers đž and the two blueberry bushes you mentioned. I meant to say I will be able to camouflage them into our backyard due to the fact we live in a gated community. I also want to have a Honey đŻ đ garden and butterfly đŠ garden đȘŽ. Yes, thank you for the pollinators gardens đž đș .đ
Enjoyed this informative style video especially on plants that do well here in our southern climate, there were a few I will definitely adding to my garden this season. Thank you! đ
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Jenny!!!! Iâve been waiting for this list. #9AHouston is a tough game. Canât wait to get some of these into my garden.

Enjoyed this video so much! The list is in my garden journal!
Yahoo!!!!
Great video and thank you for sharing đ±đŒđŒđ·đ·đșđșđđđŠđŠđ„°
Hi Jenny, love your videos. I am in Iowa and wish the bunnies didn't like day lilies as I love them but I think they like them more LOL I am going to get the Spot On Pulmonaria and cross my fingers that the deer and bunnies leave them alone. Thanks for the ideas!!!
Try sprinkling Repels-All at the base to discourage bunnies.
I never noticed bunnies chomping on my daylilies, but they like a lot of other things in my garden.
Thanks you! â„ïž
Thank you, Jenny for this video. I took notes, going to the Proven Winnerâs website ASAPđ. Iâm in southern WV so it gets hot and humid here but not quite like NC.
Great ideas to look forward to this next growing season. I wish more garden centers in my area (east Tx) carried PW plants. Thanks Jenny

Thank you for the list. :)
