I just lost my Neewer tripod during vacation, left it on top of my car and took off, at least I still got the plate with my camera. Time to shop for a replacement.
I started with a Gitzo tripod when I used to do photography back in 08 and the tripod still works perfectly. Switching into videography I started with a Benro tripod which was okay, I knew I needed something better. When the Flowtech 75 was announced I got one immediately with the FSB 8 video head. Now since I have larger camera setups such as Red/ Arri with cine glass I was looking into getting the Oconnor 1040 tripod system, that's both head and legs. unfortunately with the coronavirus lockdown and quarantine had to postpone it since all jobs got cancelled.
Nice! Sounds pretty similar to what we did. I have the FSB 8 with the Flowtech 75 as well! The Oconnor 1040 is a beast - you’re gonna love it. But yeah holding off any future purchases here now as well. Thanks for supporting the channel!
I bought that exact $100 tripod. Mine broke pretty quickly as well. It last three years but that was with me maneuvuering around the issues. The slide locks stopped locking fully. The holders snapped like you said. And the head would get loose sometimes and I'd have to tighten it constantly... Got so used to it that when I finally got a good tripod it was jarring to me lol.
Haha wow! Impressive that you made it work for 3 years. Bet it was nice when you finally hit that upgrade button. Enjoy the new one and happy shooting!
I've got a Vinten Vision Blue (fluid head/tripod combo) that i use most of the time but also have an older super heavy duty (weighs 24lbs i believe) O'Connor aluminum tripod that i use when i set up my C300 in the woods and leave the area while it films for a few hours for wildlife.... super stable even on windy days, but getting it all out to the woods ain't easy if you're alone, especially if you're a puny weakling like me :)
Haha nice! Those old OConnors will last forever. But yes they are heavy! I’ll have to check out the Vinten Vision - haven’t used that one. So many tripods out now it’s tough to keep track!
Picked up a second hand aluminium Sachtler FSB4 for $400 recently in great condition...using a bmpcc4k rig on it . Hitting maximum weight on it but works fine
Nice! Can’t go wrong with Sachtler especially used as they just last forever. And that’s a good deal. BMPCC 4K sounds like a perfect fit on there. Thanks for watching Jay!
I will say that not all bargain tripods are bad. I've had great luck with a company called Caryer. Not only do their products work, but they stand behind their products. Might be worth checking out if on a budget. Also look at Benro, which usually has great sales on tripods.
I haven’t personally had a lot of great experiences with bargain tripods. Haven’t heard of Caryer, though. I’ll check them out. How long have you been using it for?
@@FilmJams I've been using their standing monopod for a few years now. When I first reviewed it, I didn't like it. (It actually broke while testing it). After I returned it, the company contacted me and asked me if I would give it a second chance.(Apparently, I had a dud.) I love it now! I pretty much take it on all my trips and day hikes. It came with a 701 type head and works just as well as my Manfrotto. (I now have the Caryer head on my Manfrotto sticks, so that says something.) True, it's more plastic then the Manfrotto, but I was impressed for a budget brand. And the fact that this company stands behind what they make is always a good sign. I just ordered a tripod from them the other day. Hopefully, they have kept up the quality, unlike some other budget brands where quality varies from product to product.
(Sorry just seeing this comment now!) Ok good info to know! Interesting that the first one broke. But glad to hear the company fixed the issue and sent you another one. That’s such an important aspect of buying film gear, because we sometimes live with this equipment for 10-20 years, or more... and having companies that stand behind their products to make sure we can do our jobs is really important. Hope you’re staying safe, take care!
Ha! I guess budget can mean different things to dif people, but we do go over tripods that start around $600 up to tripods costing thousands. Hope it’s helpful!
I am using a Slik AMT that has been discontinued (pro 330 DXB). Can you recommend anything comparable? I just need a good, super easy tripod for studio filming. I am still trying to get the dude I borrowed the Slik from to sell it to me since it meets my needs, but he's on the fence. :( Sad face. :( I want good quality but basic basic! Thank you.
IM SO LOST SOMEONE HELP! I have the canon c300 mark ii and need a good quality tripod that's not too expensive. Looking at some used ones, Lots of parts are sold separately. Some are just the legs, or the head. Can i combine different brands of legs/heads? Also do I need to get a "tripod base" for my camera?
You can mix different brands of tripod heads with different sticks as long as they are the same bowl size. 100mm is what I’d recommend for the C300mkii- you don’t need to buy the separate plate. But you can add later if you want more flexibility. We have links below the video in the description to some Complete Tripod packages that all should work with the C300mkii. Hope that helps. Good luck!
The question I have for a beginner with a very low budget to buy a bunch of gear (tripod, microphones, lights, etc.), what about the little guys? My budget was blown out of the water watching your video. What about the little guys who don't have a lot of money and are just starting out and don't have $12,000 cameras? Thanks for the video...but this looks like it is still geared for the professionals.
Randy Milliron hi Randy thanks for watching and for your question. I’m just wondering did you watch the full video? We give a number examples ranging in price from $600 - $1200 for tripods that we recommend. They’re also actually listed below the video in the description with links to them. If you don’t have the budget for a new one, we also recommend looking for used options on eBay which can cost half that. If you don’t have at least $300 in your budget for a tripod yet, I’d recommend holding off. The point of this video is that spending a little extra money on a tripod in the long run will save you money - At least in our experience. If you want to spend $100 on a tripod like Jai did, you can definitely give it a go, but we’re trying to save you that hassle of having it break or not function how you want it to. You also might want to check out our other video on how to start a production company for under $10,000 where we actually list all of the gear you’ll need including audio, lighting, grip gear, camera, tripod, computer all for under $10,000. If you’re just starting out looking for gear definitely check that video out.

Film Jams Yes, I watched all the way to the end. Although I found your video quite funny (at Jai’s expense), I understand you get what you pay for. I’ve been researching tripods now for over two weeks and just want to make the best decision for my budget right now. I bought a Rhino RŌV Slider and my two cheap hand-me-down tripods cannot handle the weight of the Slider and my Canon 80D. So I’m back to researching. Thanks for the reply.
I can understand that. What’s your total budget? I think best bang for the buck is the Manfrotto 504 - and go with the Aluminum sticks (heavier but cheaper). And like I mentioned check eBay for used - lots of used deals right now with the Rental houses clearing excess inventory because of the Quarantine. Good luck!
What you can buy with the price of one Sachler "budget" tripod: Camera: BMPCC4k Lenses: used EF mount manual focus lenses Lighting: Godox SL series Audio: Takstar shotgun mic and Zoom H1 recorder Slider: GVM Gimbal: Zhiyun Weebill Lab S
A BMPCC4K alone is $1295 on B&H. The lower end Sachtler we show in the video (and listed below in the description) is $1200. There are plenty of other good tripods under $1000. Used you can find Sachtlers for $500-800 on EBay - like we mention in the video. And the Sachtler is probably the only item on that list that will last 30 years plus. So yes it’s a long term investment. I’ve made the mistake of getting cheap tripods and the point of this video was to try and help others from making that mistake. I do like your list tho! The 18 and 15 are much better if you’re dealing with heavier payloads and larger glass like a 600mm lens. Personally I’d go with the 18 s2 (I have 3 of them). I also own the fsb10 and I rarely use it because it doesn’t have as many controls and doesn’t handle the weight as well. Go as big as you feel comfortable with. The 18 is my pick out of those tho.
