    I will add one comment prior to swapping the starter. A click sound may also be poor battery voltage. I had the exact sound as here and power in the purple wire, but only 10,5v in the battery. Swapped the battery and no more start issues. My petrol 150 had an original 75ah battery, while most online suggest a lower capacity 62-64ah that might give a too low starting power.

  • @matthiasendler7268
    @matthiasendler7268 Před 3 lety +1

    Your video is pure gold! Thankfully the starter is working, so I don't have to change it. It's an ECU problem, that when the engine is "hot" there is no voltage when turning the key to start between the purple wire and the minus of the battery. So my solution is a bit hacky but it works... having a push button connecting the purple cable with plus of the battery :)

    • @thaborivele7712
      @thaborivele7712 Před 3 lety

      How do you connect the purple cable to the battery

    • @matthiasendler7268
      @matthiasendler7268 Před 3 lety +1

      There's a plug connector in the battery compartment with a blue, brown and purple white cable. You cut the puple white cable on the female connector side and then solder a new cable to it on the side of the female connector. Make sure you use heat shrink tubing to isolate the soldered connection and also put some heat shrink tubing on the now open end of the cable which is coming from a relais. If you don't do that, you run the risk of a short and then there's NO fuse and that could end pretty badly!!! Then I connect the newly soldered cable (make sure the cable is a 2.5 mm² cable) to the battery plus using a push button and a second cable. This is very hacky, as it would be better to also have a fuse and a protective diode in order to cancel possible sparking in the push button and also protect against a possible short. It would be even better to use a relais... but I had none at hand and my solution works for me... Do this at your own risk!!! As you need to be sure, that you do it correctly. Also do the testing first, as this solution only helps if there's no signal comming from the ECU when turning the ignition, otherwise your starter isn't working correctly. Make sure you consult the electronic schematics of your particular model and understand exactly what you do before doing anything... blindly following my instruction could worsen your problem!!! So again: DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND DON'T FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTION BLINDLY!

In fact, I tried to connect the purple cable to the battery and it starts well (it was not starting with the ignition at that time). Therefore, it seems that the problem is not the starter. I also tested the battery with a multimeter and it shows between 12.36V and 12.62V (after turning on the headlight for two minutes), falling around 10.90V during igniting, and around 14V during running the car, which means the battery is fine, I think. How about the starter relay?

      The replay is in between the starter and the ignition. If you have live at the starter that means the relay is ok. Just like the video.

      Thanks. I have an intermittent issue, and the starter was only replaced 4 months ago. Hence I am turning my attention to the Relay. However on the relay board there is no relay in position M, where MB advise it should be. There is a green relay on a separate connector (white rather than on the black rectangular board). Any idea if it was moved to another position on the W169 2012 A160? Thanks. Also this is the same A160 you repaired the VVT gearbox on in 2020. Still running. 😊
