  • In this one, I tackle the dreaded steering gear box slop. Truck is wandering too much when driving. Not safe! So, we'll fix it.

Having the same issues. Just replaced all the ball joints, tie rod ends, trackbar. Still have slop and has to be this. Thanks for the video!

It really didn't help mine. The excess slop is in the input shaft. I may have to invest in a Red Cap brand which is supposed to have a much tighter input shaft.

Nice video, I appreciate the time you spent on this. What direction are you spinning the stud to tighten everything up?

I recently bought 2008 f250 6.4. In tha past I have adjusted the steering gear on other vehicles but have not touched this one. The steering in it feels like the steering gear is boarder line to tight. Im wondering if someone didnt over tighten It. Now it dosent stick at a full turn, but on slight turns it will stay where you put it. So If your going around a slight left/right turn and let go of the wheel it will follow the turn till it reaches the end then if you didn't pull it back it would continue that same exact turn not snapping back to straight. I'm thinking maybe someone over adjusted the gear before they sold it? Only other things I can think of that would cause that are: Flat tires, Froze up ball joints, bent steer cylinder rod, bad piston seals in the cylinder, something with the hydrologic system like a sticky valve somewhere, The universal joint or joints on the steering shaft going from the steering wheel to the steering gear box are binding from rust ect, Or last but not least the steering gear is too tight. Any thoughts? Am i missing another cause? I have not had it in the air yet soon as I do I can eliminate a few things on that list just by unhooking things and grabbing the tire and steering by pushing on the tire. I'm thinking first I'll unhook each tie rod see if each wheel turns easy then put them back and unhook the power steering rack see if both wheels move easy together ect ect. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

It sounds like someone did tighten the adjusting screw on the gearbox too tight. Check the rest of your steering components for slack, but I would say gearbox. I've not had any luck on the Super Duty's by adjusting that screw. The play is in the input shaft where the steering column connects. My plan is to invest in the Red Cap steering gear box. Although expensive, they have addressed that input shaft play. Good luck on your project!

Tighten the adjuster all the way down the back off 1/4 turn and lock it down. Done 0-play

So how'd it drive? I have an '08 F350 that has some steering wheel slop but has new ball joints, tie rod ends, track bar and pitman bar, plus a new dual stabilizer. Was going to do the same adjustment to mine.
