The other day I was asked, "do you still love Canada?" I love that Canada was once part of the Underground Railroad that brought refugees to freedom... that we once helped others escape slavery and oppression. I love that we implemented universal healthcare so we would not abandon the poor to sickness... that we cared so deeply for one another we did our best to make sure none would suffer. I love that at one time we could have a different opinion and still be respected for it. I love that we supported our sciences which lead to breakthroughs like insulin and the pacemaker... Canadian contributions that, to this day, help hundreds of thousands world wide. We developed radar technologies. We invented the electron microscope... and yes... we invented table hockey. I love that Canadians fought to expand their rights... from women's suffrage to the charter of rights and freedoms. So to answer the question, "Do you still love Canada?" My answer is yes... It sounds as though America and Canada are one in the same (minus America's glut of gun massacres, and yes, naysayers, I heavily support the Second Amendment). I pray for a better future for us both, Shane.
No it's not the same, my prime minister, Steven Harper just sucks and isn't doing nothing to help Canada out. Is also putting us deeper in the ground so when Election Day is happening and someone new is picked they'll have to fix what Harper did.

About the 2nd amendment. I think the best compromise would be: one gun. (so you can't have an armory in your basement.) and pistols only. (obvious reasons)

Huh. Canada's just as screwed as the US is. At least it looks like those people know that he's awful. Unlike a good amount of our citizens with our candidates. It feels like people are unable to realize that almost all front runners for our president are horrible. It sucks.

I can;t vote in SA because 1) the votes are tempered with, they have admitted to this and 2) Not one of the people we vote for are actually any good, every single president we have had since 1994 has slowly but surely sent this country down the drain. We are heading for civil war, and for good reason. Voting for the lesser devil doesn't make you a hero, it just enforces them to believe their actions are good and just, when in reality they are deliberately tightening the noose. So no, I don't vote, and I won't not until my country has sorted its shit out.

Everybody uses that cheap copout "All Politicians are the same", but nobody proposes any changes, any solutions, or any ways to solve the problems. The just bring up "Political corruption" and that's supposed to be some conversation ender. It doesn't help anybody. Next to prayer, its the best way to do nothing and still think you're helping.
Krobbkag Destroyer Of Worlds That's not a cheap cop-out.There is a reason why people say that, stereo-types exist because they are in some way based on truth. So, yes a lot of politicians are that way, that's just the way it is. They know how to manipulate and lie, it's part of the job description. You (as a bystander) can not tell who they will and will not be when they reach their goal, or even if they will keep to their promises, as a lot of people have learned the hard way. Once bitten twice shy and if you've been bitten by a politician most people think twice about voting.
You can't expect people to keep forgiving them and keep voting. If everyone stopped voting perhaps the politicians will take a hint and actually do what they promise or try not declare war for no good reason. But If there is a revolution in my country yes, I will fight and I'll do my small part to ensure we get it back on its feet. I don't fool myself into thinking a civil war will be a grand affair but this is a reality a lot of SA citizen have accepted, and there isn't a whole lot we can do about it. It will happen and whether I say it in person, behind a screen or on TV, it doesn't make it any less true.

The more time passes the more a battle rages over the horizon. The people sharpening their pitchforks of fatigue and torches of chaos. Whether this mob that charges these monsters is right or not, can not be stopped. A sun rises over the hill and it seeks to burn those who have caused it suffering. It will rise above the hills that shrouded us in darkness and it will set the dead wood ablaze as new life grows in its place. You are an amazing poet and I hope you continue to do amazing things for the world.

+purificaation take the time to learn about your local riding and what each candidates local agenda or platform is. there are two levels of voting, federal and local. I normally vote Liberal but will vote either Green or NDP because of the local Liberal candidates' pro fracking views on LNG effects my town in BC. Yet in order to vote strategically I would need to vote Liberal.

The best thing for Canada is first of all, to get rid of Harper. Find out which non-Conservative candidate in your riding has the best chance of defeating the Conservative. Vote for that person, and if it's not your first choice, hold your nose and do it anyway. My preferred party this time around was the Greens, but the NDP has the best chance against the Conservatives, so I voted NDP. Since both parties are amenable to working together on specific issues, it works fine for me.
Some people in Quebec are even voting Bloc if that's what it will take to get rid of the Conservatives.

Shane is a poet. Like many poets, he tends to get emotional when it comes down to social problems like poverty. Unfortunately, that's where it ends. Gary Turk, Suli Breaks and many others have made socialist clips on political issues because they all felt bad for the victims.
I'm not even a conservative btw, but I sure as hell am not a socialist. It's so easy to play with people's emotions. Too bad Shane jumped on that bandwagon instead of actually studying these problems.

This says it all, except I don't agree, Shane, with you apologizing to Harper about having to let him go. I don't think Harper himself would ever apologize to Canadians (which is the least he could do) for anything you've mentioned - I doubt he sees himself responsible. It's enough to say, "We have to let you go". Otherwise you've beautifully & succinctly captured what the last decade has become. A living nightmare.

Why does every country seem to have a way of hating their vets? That word, veteran, should mean something. If not then what's the whole point of calling them that? I don't want to believe it's to mock them, because I know some people that would strongly disagree. For a country that's just oh so patriotic, and oh so ignorant that people have to be oh so patriotic just to apply, I question your patriotism. You can't support sending people off to die, and then put off helping them IF they get back. Reality never works that way for long.
