This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art.
The lyrics have a lot of layers:
    Europe let’s come together!
    It’s now or never!
    I love you all!
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Visit my friends in France
Or take a long walk to Vienna
I want to leave the Netherlands
    But my passport is gone
    Fortunately don't need a visa
    To be with you
So take the bus to Poland
    Or the train to Berlin
I have no money for Paris
    So use my imagination
Do you have a euro please
    Say "merci" and "please"
    I lost everything
    Except time
    So am travelling every day
    For the world is mine
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa!
    Ich bin in Deutschland
    Aber Ich bin so allein
    Io sono in Italia
    but still I feel pain
    Am running from myself
Calling for "help!" all day long
Yes I even give people money
But there is no one to help me
    I don't need es-car-gots
    Don't need fish 'n chips
    Don't need paella, no
I don't even really know what that is
    Turn on the radio
    I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai"
    Won't stop until they say
"Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!"
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa!
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa….
    Welcome in Europe boy!
At the end of the day
    We are all human beings
    My father once told me
    It's a world without borders
    I miss you every day
    Is what I secretly whisper
    You see dad
    I listened to you
    Is what I secretly whisper
    You see dad
    I listened to you

    Your Dutch friend here!
What a great reaction video! You looked surprised the whole time. Sometimes even confunsed?! Haha!
But: Altho I always prefer more serious music with instruments etc. I do stand behind this entry. I think we never send someone to Eurovision that gave himself for 200%, as Joost does. He so much wants this. And compared to many "fun" songs in Eurovision this one had actually a story behind it. So I do support it, but I won't add it to my Eurovision playlist ;).

Hello @TheJoeri98, I hope you're doing great 🙌 Thank you so much for the explanation! It has a deeper meaning to me now. I thought it could have an impactful story behind it but I wasn't sure which one would be. I'm not also sure if I will be able to react to other performances, because my main goal is to finish all 37 reactions first (one per country), and Eurovision is just around the corner! 😬But if I can, I will. And then I will also say to you if Peter enjoyed it or not, he hasn't answered me yet, but he has a very particular taste, so I'm not sure where he will stand 😅😂 Hugs and thank you for your comment! ♥

Guys, I love this bet! But Muguel gave the answer already; I'm right in the middle... I do support it and understands why he's selected. But it's not my personal taste. And I do agree I have a perticular taste ;), every year I send Miguel my list of points I gave to all the entries, and it's not rare my list is very different then his, or most people. Curious for this year!

Why don't you turn on those subtitles.
It is included in all languages.
Because you are not familiar with the language, you miss the entire essence of this song.
And because of this alone, the non-English songs often lose a lot of points. While they all say that more action should be taken in their own language and culture.
If you turn on subtitles, we give non-English performing groups a fairer chance compared to all those English-speaking groups.
This Song is not only a work of art musically, but also a work of art lyrically.
Showing an entire life with all its wishes and sorrows in three minutes, ultimately ending in a conclusion in which he ends the same past and present by burning it all for a new beginning.
But unfortunately, because of that, this Song will end up with the jury members who have no knowledge of art and forget to include the translation.

      @eurovisiongreetings9404  Před měsícem

Hello! Thank you for your comment. Let me try to answer to all the points you mentioned:
      1) I usually do not tend to put subtitles on for the first time I'm listening to a song (especially an Eurovision one), because it might distract me from what I'm earing/seeing, since I want to pay attention to every detail as much as possible. It gets even trickier doing so while reacting to it, as I'm doing with these videos. So some could follow your suggestion, but I mainly prefer not to. It's true that there are some videos where I have subtitles on and it helps, but as I said, it could move me away from the main point of the song, which I want to avoid, especially in a videoclip like this one, where a lot is happening. Remember that what you saw was my first genuine reaction to it, so when I go back to a song which lyrics I couldn't understand at first, only then I put the subtitles on;
      2) Having said this, even if knowing the story behind the lyrics is important to judge a song, I also like when it is capable of portraying emotions not understanding a single word, because at the end of the day that's what usually happens at Eurovision (it's not really common to have a background/subtitles translating the song while it's performed live, perhaps only some words);
      3) Of course that understaing the lyrics could help a song to get more points - or it could turn the other way around. But if a song is good and performed well, it could reach a great result in the final no matter what (if it qualifies, which I think will happen).
