Field Test 2022: Lauf Seigla gravel bike review

  • There aren’t too many dropbar bikes so unique that you can spot them from multiple switchbacks away. With its unmistakable Grit leaf spring suspension fork up front, the new Lauf Seigla is a conversation starter and offers plenty to keep that conversation going.
    Roughly translating to "perseverance", the Seigla is the latest model from the gravel-focussed Icelandic brand. It’s a bike that has been designed for racing across challenging mixed surfaces as fast as possible and does that by combining absolutely enormous tyre clearance with geometry closely comparable to Lauf’s True Grit bike. And while it may be built for speed, as it turns out, it’s plenty of fun, too.

    Ok. You guys are awesome! This was the video that answered all of my questions. In the end, you described who this bike is for - and you were describing me as a rider. I am not a gravel racer - but I ride 100+ miles a week on a BMC cyclocross bike that shakes me hard on the Michigan washboard gravel roads at times - even with large tires at low pressure. I want something that can be fast and handle our gravel. This bike seems to be a legit option for me. Also, I was struggling over which groupset I should move into, but then I heard that you ride and like the "AXS XPLR". That was very helpful. Thanks again!

    nice and very deep (er) analisys ... I get the gravel race part but, I wonder because It was built to islandic gravel terrain... and race focus... makes this a weapon to chase one day races BUT then what about endurance or ultraendurance races bike pack races... something like Gbduro or Silkroad type of races... that geometry ... can handle bags and extra weight and control well ... or definitively is not made to spent over 10 hrs in the saddle and carry some extra bags.

    • @lenolenoleno
      @lenolenoleno Před rokem

      100% not needed for this bike (unless you have a chronic back issue or something). Back end is super compliant (will start to bob if you ride it in any anger with a suspension seatpost).

    • @steveco1800
      @steveco1800 Před rokem

      @@lenolenoleno Yeah maybe not needed, but on my 29er hardtail I don't find the Redshift post bobs when set firm enough and it still allows you to comfortably stay seated over a lot more of the rough. Paired with a Lauf fork you get a similar amount of travel front and back.

    • @lenolenoleno
      @lenolenoleno Před rokem

      @@steveco1800 Yeah it's not necessarily any bob but more the stacking of 3 undamped varying spring rates: tyre, suspension seatpost and frame (which is significant in the Seigla). This stacking leads to a vague feeling/some instability in the hips. It applies more to those who will tuck in and "ride in anger". If you're more of a "plod along" sort of rider then this won't matter as much (if anything cruiser/slower riders will benefit more from a suspension seatpost as you fall into holes deeper/wear bumps on your butt rather than your feet).

    Did you test the size SMALL? Dave and/or James, could you tell us how tall you are and your inseam? Apparently the stiffness on the leaf springs is tuned for each size, so the fork on size small s a little softer than the medium, which is softer than the large, etc.
    Thanks very much for the honest review!

    • @angryasian74
      @angryasian74 Před rokem +1

      We tested a small. I'm 1.72 m and weigh 71 kg. Dave and I are about the same height, but he runs his saddle about 40ish mm higher than mine IIRC. Not sure about his weight, but we're not far off. Betsy and Ellen are both a couple of centimeters shorter, and certainly quite a bit lighter than we are.

    Longer stays might solve a couple issues here...more clearance in the rear so you wouldn't have to deal with the weird BB AND you'd build in a bit more rear compliance as well. But then you can't call it a "race" bike

    • @lenolenoleno
      @lenolenoleno Před rokem +3

      What a pointless comment. Lengthening the stays would make it feel completely different. Also there is no compromise with the BB, it's a standard MTB BB threaded shell.
      Longer stays has been used on every other bike to gain clearance which in turn makes the ride increasingly sluggish. E.g a Canyon Grizl to get 50mm clearance on 700c has 435mm stays. That's the same length as my enduro MTB with 2.5 inch 29er tyres which is just silly considering the wildly different demands.
      The whole design brief of this bike was to have your cake (MTB width) and eat it too (road-esque agility).
