  • Part of the long running Bonneville Bobber Black project. It would seem that the recent Sub zero temperatures have killed the Bobber but we still went ahead and fitted the Oil Temperature Gauge from Motone customs. Suitable for all modern Bonneville models!

    I feel sorry for the Brits. Here in Oz, I took the Bullet for a 300 km ride yesterday in 35°c blue sky weather. They say it'll be 37°on Sunday. Thanks, Five×Great-grandfather, for stealing that tea. Best decision ever made.

    A simple trick to see if the gauge is well calibrated : dipp it in boiling water, if it shows 100 degrees it’s okay. When your Bonny is equipped with the original U lock holder under the injectors, it interferes with the U lock.

    Retired marine who spent just a little bit in Norway and found my wind chill chart the other day , if your travelling at 35 mph and it’s 10c it’s really 4 c ,so minus ➖ 2 will be - 8 c nice . I wonder if the missus would knit a nice little cover for my mobile . I’ve got a triumph 660 sport kept outside -4 last night but start’s every time , reason it’s trickle charged with a 10 watt Optimate solar panel,, feeds in about . 07 amps and of course only in the daytime , but bike hasn’t failed me since using 😊👍👍

    Looks alright, a bit steampunky!
    I had exactly those symptoms on a 2017 Mini during the original lockdown. I’d kept it charged but not driven for 3 months, the battery appeared to be fully charged, 12.75, but had still found a way to die. Replacing battery was the (expensive)cure.

Must look up the oil. temp. parameters, if I can find them. Very tempting to get - who doesn’t like a good gauge? Let us know how the starting problem was resolved Stuart - as I’m sure you will.

    You should surely use a lithium battery that gives a weight savings of 5-8 pounds and you can take the battery inside to keep it warm and use a USB plug like a computer for charging / maintaining. Mine for the Moto Guzzi V7 is 1.3 pounds from the original of nine pounds! Starts with a roar immediately each time as there are more cranking amps. I understand that this helps with a brighter spark, etc., for improved handling and longevity of the engine.
    Thank you as always for the little jobs though off-season for you! I am in Miami with the air conditioning on!

    another edit ten days later. bought one of these for my air cooled 2007 T100 and fitting today found that the temperature probe is too long. suggest this is only for water cooled models not all as Motone state.

    A pitty it was a nogo for the bobber. I used to have a Suzuki VZ800 that didn't like the cold either and ate a battery every winter, it happens. But being honest, even my Classic 500 needs 4 to 5 kicks before coming alive in the morning with weather like this, my Interceptor 650 does a bit better, but then again I upgraded the relays on both bikes knowing the original ones are prone to failure. Personally, I would not get such a doo-da, even for my air cooled RE's as I prefer the bare essentials look, but I can understand it makes a nice accessory and the craftmanship looks good on this and seems to mesh in well with the aesthetics of the bike.

    Battery leads, earth, both ends of leads. Battery. Good starting points. I'm a grease monkey. I'd put my booster pack to the battery. If this works it's battery or connections there. Good luck in this weather. My tools are like ice cubes.👍🤣

    Never fear overheat, modern bikes with water cool are real good at keeping itself cool. Heck I was impressed by an air cool RE bullet 350 which had zero problem running hot in 32C/89F weather.

    • @frankysworld
      @frankysworld Před 4 měsíci +1

      Both my air-cooled RE's (Classic 500 an interceptor 650) seem to handle warm weather well (the few instances in Irish climate permitting 😄) Maybe older bullets can be more sensitive, but I think since the UCE engines they pump up a lot of oil that helps with the cooling. Not skimming on the quality of the oil is definitely a factor, plus both of my RE's are fitted with FuelX mods that run them a bit richer for some extra oomph at the lower RPM's. I did own an 1972 Enfield India Bullet 350 as my first ever bike that had some issues running too hot, but I think my 18 years old self was equally to blame for poring in the cheapest crud I could find and then trying to keep up with my buddies Yamaha RD350 😂

You commented they run a little hot. I was at a Triumph dealership today and saw the new T-120. Very nice looking. The radiator on the bike seemed extremely small for a bike like this. The U.K. stopped using the old Fahrenheit measurements back in the early seventies. Most Europeans under the age of 65 really don’t need to know about the old measurements. (They only need to know that when ordering a glass of wine it can either be regular (250cl) or large (330cl…) they don’t seem to worry about much else these days..

    I have to wonder if an oil temperature gauge is needed. The motorcycle's engine is oil and water-cooled. It is designed to operate within normal use and temperature ranges. Even if you install a temperature gauge, will it actually affect your riding? At what temperature would you stop or change your ride? It might look cool but is like putting lipstick on a pig considering the price.
