To get the full benefits you need to use headphones.
This is because of the way binaural beats work.
One frequency is sent to the left ear, and one to the right ear. The brain then takes these two frequencies and interprets a third frequency, which is the mathematical difference between the two. The brain then follows along at that frequency. This is called ‘Frequency Following Response'.
For example:
Left ear: 280 Hertz
Right ear: 292 Hertz
Resulting frequency: 12 Hz (alpha)
I don't wear headphones?
You will still benefit from the relaxing and healing qualities of the music, but the brainwave entrainment will not happen.
BBM, for example, tune many of their tracks to the ancient solfeggio scale. This scale is said to have healing properties at certain frequencies, and some of those tuning frequencies are delightful to listen to, even without headphones.
