  • With Australia's 2024 national RC crawling event behind us, I'm now looking to optimise my Mini. I was lucky enough to meet with Steve Price of Pricey's Custom Crawlers (link below), who is a suspension specialist with real-world, 1:1 motor racing experience.
    Come and check out a run at the national level and then hear what Pricey has to say about tuning suspension for optimal crawling! Let's go!

    Making it look easy there! Congrats on your podium finish! I only ever see guys showing off their Pricey's shocks on their builds on facebook. Really cool to hear his approach to the dual spring setup

    Steve is such a legend on the crawler scene. I built up a Capra a few years ago and decided to get more serious about it and went with the Vader delrin flat skid and worked with Steve to get the right shock combo and slightly longer links to stretch it out just a bit. He helped me sort out what Axial kit to buy for the drivelines, too. I was instantly getting lines on my backyard course that I had tried 100 times and only gotten twice and was amazed at some of the other features I started getting in the mountains on natural terrain. This really transformed my rig. I'm also not an affiliate, just a fan of what he is offering to the community. Now if I could just talk him into making 1/24 scale shocks!

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 14 dny +1

      Steve doesn't do affiliates, for what it's worth. I bought 5 sets of shocks from him last month and paid the same as you or anyone else would.
      The man knows what he's about, for sure! I'm loving mine so far! I'll do a follow up vid later this year talking about the changes 😎

    You had a great finish with the second place. I am not sure I understand all of the interview.But, I will bookmark this episode and go back when I build one. You really gave that servo award workout.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Haha yes the servos work awfully hard on comp day.
      The gist of the interview was that we want shocks that keep the sprung weight of the chassis drawn low, kinda like enforced droop with those internal springs.
      They can still articulate but they keep the body sucked low to the ground for longer, at whatever the desired ride height is.
      Bottom line, when you want his help, Pricey will help you get achieve ride height, whatever it is you want, and the travel you need for when the rig drops a wheel into obstacles.
      Isn't it great to have that option! I need to get all my rigs sorted, now!

    • @michaeldorich4485
      @michaeldorich4485 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@RCTNT Is this similar to on road racers lowering ride height by putting fuel tubing in their shocks?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes, but Pricey's approach is more sophisticated, with deliberately selected springs to achieve a specific effect, based on the subject vehicle. But yes, you're on the right track.

    • @michaeldorich4485
      @michaeldorich4485 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@RCTNT If I recall correctly I saw one youtuber who put springs from ball point pens inside crawler shocks.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, it's an old trick. But Pricey even says in this interview that they specifically don't do that. The shocks are built to meet the ride height desired for the crawler you have, based on its sprung and unsprung weight.

  • @derrickhays3627
    @derrickhays3627 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Congrats on the finish💪 not a comp guy myself but the mini's look like a lot of fun, I've only ever watched bits and pieces of 10th scale comps but if you have to winch to make a line I figure you can't make it 😅 anyway great rig thanks for sharing.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Haha right, that's my thinking somewhat with Scale-1. I've got the winch for the scale point but I never use it.
      Comps are not for everyone, but they're often something that takes people by surprise when they first try one. Very fun.
      If the culture is positive, that time and point pressure completely changes how you look at clearing obstacles. It's a very enjoyable pursuit.

    That was Awsome I’m loving my feather weight!
    See you added little green piece in back to mee length! I hadnt gotten new tires on until last night mounted up some dlux offered the hp rover I like my ruptures so much had to get them. Should make big diff, the stock tires are nice with no foams the way they come and extra weight I am surprised at their abilities. The rc4wd pins are out of stock thanks to you 😁.
    I run most rigs no springs front banded, haven’t banded this yet it hurts breakover but sidehill and steep nothing better. My HT feather is no springs and the weight in front dos Awsome just when get to like a 60 plus angle it does lift but thanks to your design it is light and doesn’t lift tires tilll well into the 60 degree plus crawls

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 3 měsíci

      That's an interesting approach, the lack of springs. I suspect Pricey's method will be slightly better than that, but your approach is certainly creative and interesting to consider too. It's probably better than stock, in many cases.
      Rovers, you say! That is what was running on 1st and 3rd place rigs, both psycho pat based builds with Pink Bits Custom Crawlers or Hitman chasses. (that made my budget victory even sweeter, hehe)
      Thanks again for pointing out the problem with my chassis length. I'm so grateful! Easily fixed and the extra

    • @rcarty419
      @rcarty419 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Ohhh I’m sure his shocks are better.
      But for most part I’ve found spring removal an easy super shock upgrade. Then band the front.
      Rear drops down front stays attached to that front axle weight.
      If in banded chassis does fall away quickly but that’s ok as long as not hitting super insane angles.
      Love way mine is sitting with no springs stock shocks front highest hole, rear 3 down from top.
      Love this thing.
      I just need to get battery behind instead of on top of my servo and idk what else I’d do other than maybe shorten front links etc and lengthen rear….i haven’t gotten into those yet!!!
      Thanks you are Awsome dude!

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Haha such a great question! So, I found the car wasn't quite WRCCA-compliant, right before Nationals! So I hustled to create an extension that would be lightweight, sturdy and out of the way. This little addition adds 11g plus 4 screws to secure it, so it did the trick. When I redesign this thing (it's coming, but other projects are ahead of it), I'll have the dimensions better planned!!
